Chasing Icebergs

Yes, I was.  My husband and I flew to Newfoundland for a family visit and we drove around looking for puffins and icebergs.

The puffins had apparently returned, but when we visited their nesting grounds, they were out to sea feeding.

Ann, from Laughing Gas Quilts, lives 3.5 km from my brother-in-law.  SEW … my husband & I went for tea.  She is a very warm and hospitable lady! It was great to meet her in person!  She has a beautiful home on a pond near St. Johns.  I saw her awesome Celtic Knots quilt.  It is absolutely exquisite!  The knots are hand sewn, the quilting is beautiful.  If you haven’t seen it – it’s worth visiting her blog to take a look.  Unfortunately, I did not take a picture of it and I didn’t get permission to steal a picture of it.  I also saw a pile of her PHD in 2018 quilts in progress, but I’ll leave that up to her to take pictures of.  However, my husband took a picture of the 2 of us.

I did visit a few quilt shops where we travelled, but I’ll leave that for another post.

Here is a slide show of some of the highlights of our time in NF.  It is truly a beautiful place!  However, I froze!  We saw 3 icebergs, 1 moose, 0 puffins and 1 whale.  A boat trip was contemplated, but with rain, the North Atlantic wind and temperatures around 1  degrees C (33 F), we decided that warmth was more important.  And yes, we did have 3-4″ of snow!

On our way home we made a quick stop in Ontario.  My cousin, Terry, from TLC Quilts, invited us over for dinner.  We got to see many of her wonderful creations, both finished and in progress.  Again, you can visit her blog to see the pictures of her quilts. Here is a picture of the 2 of us: (and yes, I stole the picture from her blog!)

Summary of our trip: Lots of great memories!  Lots and lots of visiting with numerous family members and lots and lots of miles put on rental cars.

Stash Report

While in Newfoundland, my husband did a bit of fabric shopping.  GROAN.

I do like most of what he bought … but seriously – this gets added into MY stash.  I think next year, I’ll have to have a stash report for me and one for him!  And, just in case you were wondering, he doesn’t quilt.

The first picture is of the 10 YARDs of fabric that we brought home.  The 2nd picture is 2 kits that also had to fit into our carry-on luggage.  Yes, one is a “Row by Row” kit.  Yes, it contains appliqué, or CRap-pliqué … but it was so darn cute!  And the 3rd picture is of the package of fat quarters that I got from Quilt Canada at The Steam Trunk.   It’s a new line of fabric “Flower Garden Gatherings” by Primitive Gatherings that won’t be out until the fall.   Nope – I don’t think it’ll be sewn or even cut into before it’s available in the stores.

Fabric Used this Week:    0  yards
Fabric Used year to Date:  154.1  yards
Fabric Added this Week:     21.5  yards
Fabric Added Year to Date: 49 yards
Net Fabric used for 2017:  105.1  yards

Oh dear!  My numbers of Net Fabric used are decreasing rapidly!  I need to get quilting!

  1. Maybe the puffins will cooperate next time 🙂 I’m so happy to hear that you got to meet Ann and stop by and see Terry! I love hearing stories of online bloggers getting to meet in real life, it just warms my heart. It sounds like you might have to recruit your husband into becoming a quilter 🙂

    • Hi Tish,
Perhaps the puffins will co-operate … we will have to wait and see!
It is exciting to meet fellow bloggers … especially ones that you have connected with and admire their work!

Ha! I don’t think my hubby will become a quilter anytime soon! He’s busy working on renovations and I’m hoping to be able to move into my new quilting room in a year or ten from now! 🙂

      Happy Quilting! 🙂

  2. I checked out Ann and Terry’s blogs and enjoyed them very much. How wonderful that you could meet Ann and visit Terry. Quilters are truly such amazing people. I wonder if I will ever meet my blog friends from around the world.

I think is is pretty cute that your husband buys fabric for you and picks out what he likes. When I went on my trip last week, I had no desire to really go to quilt shops with my sweetheart. He would not enjoy it and I would feel rushed. I like to take my time in quilt shops and have been known to spend a couple of house in them.

I am still working on my PHD. I am on track except my new starts – trying to finish them this year – will be a stretch. It is hard not to start them.

  3. Hello! What a lovely trip you had! I loved your title – Chasing Icebergs! Your fabric stash has indeed grown – but isn’t that usually the case on trips? My husband occasionally picks out fabric for me, so I like your idea of having separate numbers for our husband’s stash – whether they quilt or not! 🙂 Thank you so much for sharing!

    • Hi Mia,
Sorry for the LONG delay in responding to your comment!
I actually quite enjoy it when my hubby picks out fabrics … he’s got a wonderful eye for what goes together!
Sew … are you going to keep track of your husband’s stash? I’m seriously considering it!
      Happy Quilting! 🙂

    • Hi Kate,
Yes, we did … I’d have to do a lot of buying and very little finishing to get into the red … but I hope that I can increase my “net yards used” category!!!
      Happy Quilting! 🙂

    • Hi Jayne,
I did freeze!! But my sister-in-law would light a wood stove and I would be nice and toasty by bed-time! That was fantastic! And today – they had more snow … in June! gross!

And, yes, my hubby is an enabler! Sometimes it makes me groan!!! but I think that in spite of my grumbling, I secretly like that he approves of my hobby/passion!

  4. Thanks for your kind comments, Gail. It was great to meet you both when you were visiting, and put a face to the originator of the PHD program. Sorry about the weather and puffins, but you did a great job finding the moose and icebergs. Hope you enjoyed Quilt Canada. And as Jed Clampett used to say, “Y’all come back now”.

    • Hi Ann,

It was truly great to meet you. And I was just being totally honest with my comments!

Well, it’s not like it was your fault that the puffins were out feeding and that the weather was down-right cold! And I hear that it’s still miserable and that you are expecting SNOW again! burrrrr …..
      Happy Quilting! 🙂

    • Hi Sue,
I don’t think it’s changed a lot in the smaller towns, but St. John’s has certainly changed in the last 20 years. I do find NF a fascinating and unique place to visit!

  7. How fun that you were able to meet up with friends and family! So you and your husband both shop for fabric? Maybe he needs to start quilting! Thanks for sharing the pictures; what beautiful views!

    • Hi Wendy … well, letting him shop for fabric is the primary way I get to stop in at every fabric store when we’re travelling.
Yes, Newfoundland is absolutely beautiful! So different as you drive around each corner!
      Happy Quilting! 🙂

  8. Hi Gail: I have yet to go to Newfoundland, it’s on the list but I may have to wait until we both retire to get my husband to find the time. Those are great photos. I think it’s funny that your husband buys fabric. Mine wouldn’t but he doesn’t seem to care that I do.

    • Hi Lisa,

Glad to hear that NF is on your list! It is truly amazing and the people are so very friendly!

Thank you for the compliments regarding the photos. They were taken with my iPhone. I no longer use a camera.

My husband has a great eye for colour, so I don’t mind him picking out fabric! But, it’s difficult when I’m trying to decrease my stash!

      Happy Quilting! 🙂
