I have an embroidery machine. It’s OLD and the hoops are small. At work, I was told that I needed to learn to use the embroidery machine. A big one. It’s nice. But I don’t have it at home. I can work my way around it and have designed several things, using the designs that are build in.
But I wanted to try appliqué in the hoop, on my machine. There is a real cute pattern at Sweet Pea, an Australian company. It’s a free pattern. “Learn in the Hoop.”
This little pooch finishes at 3¼”. I used the 4″ size pattern.
Sew – what did I learn? What would I do different?
- it’s fun to do appliqué and zipper insertion this way.
- When the pattern says “you may need to move the zipper pull” it should read, “Watch carefully, because you will need to move the zipper pull.”
- Make sure that the thread spools are not caught up on anything.
- If I made another pouch this size, I would likely not use batting.
- The stitching in the ear should be a bit lighter, not as dark as the nose.
- I should have left more than ¼” at the opening where I needed to turn it.
- This project took about 10 hours … (maybe a bit of an exaggeration! grin!)
- The instructions are well written and easy to follow!

That’s the cutest little pouch! If I had an embroidery machine, I’d probably never get anything else done.

Your pouch is really cute! I embroider items for a living and was really excited when “in the hoop” projects were introduced. Although most are super cute they are way too time consuming. Five Star Fonts is one of my favorite sites to purchase in the hoop projects.

Thanks! Yes, I’m sure I could have made the pouch in way less time without the emb. machine, but it definitely would not have lined up as well!
I will have to check out Five Star Fonts!
Happy Quilting & embroidery! 🙂

I haven’t done anything ‘in the hoop’ yet on my machine but, like you, the guys at work want me too. Thanks for sharing your story and for the inspiration! Your little doggy purse is cute. And I hear you about how long it takes to embroider – but the results are always so adorable!

Thanks for the heads up on the little doggy purse. I’m guessing my granddaughters would like that. I hear you on the 10 hours business. It seems embroidery takes forever!
