Moving right along with finishing!

The little quilt in the 2nd picture was made with left-overs from the quilt on the right.  The one on the right was finished in January.  You can see a close-up of the quilting HERE.

The “Left-over” quilt has not been washed yet – so it’s not a wrinkly and cozy.  It’s 45″ x 45″.  The backing and black border were also left-overs from another quilt. I did not have enough fabric to bind it in one colour. SEW, I used both green and red fabric to bind it.

Here’s a picture of the quilting.  My cousin Terry, posted on her blog, Sew What’s Next?, the link to one of Angela Walter’s videos on quilting “The Incredible Swirl.”   I watched the video once, and then jumped in.  Obviously, I did not do as Angela did … I attempted to make my quilting about ½” apart as the quilt is flannel top and back.  Yes, yes, I know … it doesn’t look much like Angela’s … but I took an idea and went with it.  It is done.  And it was fun to try something a little bit different! I will definitely watch the video again and try to follow Angela’s directions more closely!

Above are pictures of 20 of my UFO finishes this year.  For some reason, I do not have a picture of a black retreat bag that I made.  I know that I finished it.  I went looking for it so I could take a picture and I can’t find it.  I know that one person that saw it LOVED it – so did I gift it to her?  I can’t remember.

Anyhow … its a total of 21 finishes so far this year!  7 UFOs left for my PHD in 2018!

  9. I have more often than not found that my quilts using the leftovers are some of my favorites!! Once it’s washed the quilting will take on an entirely different dimension!

      I know what you mean … I was thinking that this little quilt would be a donation quilt, but it is now going to be a cuddle quilt on the couch!

  11. Leftover fabric is like free and I like making free projects. 🙂 Your free quilt looks great, congrats on a great finish. Swirls are difficult for me to get a handle on; I just need to keep practicing. Thanks for the link to Angela’s video – I’m off to take a peek! Thanks for linking to MCM Gail!

      I find swirls are easy … guess my brain runs around in circles!!! Enjoy Angela’s video! She makes it look SEW easy! (and it is).

      You’ve got to get rid of the fear.

      I’ll tell you a story. I had taken a “zendoodle” class – basically small doodling FMQ. When I got home, we had company that was staying for a few days. My friend, had not done any sewing since high school (and that was limited). I had to go out the following day, but I set her up with my little sewing machine and a few 12″ x 12″ sandwiches. When I came home, she had filled both sandwiches with marvellous doodling! She had NO fear because she didn’t know that most people did fear FMQ.

      Here’s another story: My cousin, Terry, of “Sew What’s New” has been quilting for about 2 years. She, has no fear. Is willing to try anything new. Check out her blog and see what quilting she has accomplished!

      Just try it … and don’t analyze it too much.

  15. Hi Gail! Nice ‘free’ finish and your quilting looks great. I was just thinking about my UFOs and how this month has slipped away with no UFO finishes. I’d better get my quilting in gear. Happy Sunday! ~smile~ Roseanne

      Some months do slip by with no UFO finishes. In March, I only had 1 finish and in May there were none. But, I just started tackling them when I had time and they are slowly getting done!

      What’s next? If, and only IF, I get my goal UFOs done – I may tackle some of the remaining UFOs.

      Another friend, also named Donna, did suggest that I “gift” or “give-away” some of my UFOs. Especially the ones that are destined to be donation quilts. I am seriously going to consider her suggestion. Our next guild meeting is in September, so I figure that gives me a bit of time to think about it.

  18. Fantastic! Your quilts a beautiful and clever! I need to do this. I have some UFOs that are needing attention. Your fabric in and out system is neat. How do you keep track? I suppose it would me adding up the strips cut and calculating the yardage from that?

      I started keeping track of my fabric in and out when my fabric buying was WAY out of control. It has helped me many times to avoid buying just because.

      To keep track, if the quilt design is from a pattern, I use the measurements from the fabric requirements. If not, I calculate the backing and multiply that by 2, depending on how intricate the pattern is. I don’t spend a lot of time figuring it out. In summary, it’s an educated guess. The fabric in is more accurate.
