I thought I’d be just showing a picture of this quilt in progress, as I wasn’t sure I’d have time to get it finished by today. It’s a little quilt made with 6 ½” flannel squares. A great flannel stash buster of left-over baby quilt backings. This is a UFO … and it’s finished! YEAH! I just did a big serpentine stitch along the seams and diagonally … mindless and easy to do.
On my last post I reported that I had 6 UFOs left to complete this year (along with 2 new starts) … but now that this quilt is finished, I only have 5 left! Do you hear me sighing with a little bit of relief?
Happy Quilting!
Gail

Reading the comments could you direct me to wavy lines quilting … is it free hand stitching?

Hi Helen,
The wavy lines quilting is what I teach beginning quilters to do. It’s using the walking foot, with a fairly big stick length (I set mine to around 3.2 on my Janome). Then, using the middle seam of the quilt, I gently wave back and forth following the seam.

If you go to this link, look at the first picture (click on it to make it bigger) and you can see how the line “waves” from one side to the other. Clicking on the 2nd picture might give you a better idea. (I think these blocks were 8″ … so fairly big.
Hope this helps!

WooHoo, the end is in sight! I’m pretty sure I’m going to make half my PhD projects getting completed, but projects started in 2018 may be down to the wire! Congrats on your finish!

Hi Emily!
Yes, the end is in sight … I just need to get working on the rest!
Good for you – getting your PhD projects completed. If you finish the ones started in 2018, then you will earn your PhD in Quilting! How Exciting!

I probably missed this but what batting did you use or do you use a batting if I didn’t want too thick a quilt?

Hi Helen,
I used Hobbs 80/20 with all my latest quilts. The only time I didn’t use batting, I was not impressed with the results. I think the only quilt I would not use batting in would be a denim one …

Hi Gail! The serpentine stitch looks great on the flannel. It highlights the squishiness and makes it look even more snuggle-worthy. It’s sounds like the perfect thing for the weather today – it’s actually a little chilly (gasp). Congrats on only have five UFOs to go!! Woot woot! We’re going to get there – you have been leading the parade on motivation for sure. ~smile~ Roseanne

Hi Roseanne,
Thanks! It’s chilly here as well. And raining! Which means NO smoke!!! YEAH!!!
Thank you for the encouragement to keep on knocking those UFOs down!

I think you have just solved a quilting problem I got myself into. I want to finish quilting one of my creations but wanted to do it free motion. My machine went sideways and that is not an option now. I did some straight line stitching but my top wasn’t pieced correctly. Long story short, I want to finish it off but not put a lot of time into it. That serpentine stick will be the perfect finish so I can bind that baby.

Hi Tami,
Yes the serpentine stitch covers a lot of errors … another stitch that works well is just a wavy straight stitch … wandering from one side of the seam to the other. You can sort-of see it in the pink star quilt https://quiltinggail.wordpress.com/2018/03/11/a-cute-finish/
I’m glad you’re inspired to quilt your quilt!

I made numerous errors in my current quilt. I couldn’t get my Singer to do that stitch (only straight) but I did go on the diagonal. Thank you for your post!
