So, this quilt has been gifted … and I got a picture back with my newest great-nephew, Gage, and the quilt. He was born in late August. From his pictures, he’s a real cutie!
I used a Dr. Seuss layer cake along with “Slate Grey” solid from Free Spirit. It was a fun quilt to make. Probably because I LOVE Dr. Seuss!
And a close-up of the quilting, simple straight lines that followed the chevron:
The pattern is FLYING ARROWS from Moda Bakeshop. (click on the name of the quilt to go to the link.)
As per my usual, I changed it up … I didn’t want the quilt to be as big as the pattern, nor did I want it to be as small as what she suggests for the baby quilt. SEW … I made the arrows with 24 layer cake squares and the quilt ended up being 42 “x 54″. Just the size I wanted. I used 2 ½” sashing … which was fine, except when I went to quilt it. I think if I had used 2 ¼”, the arrows would have lined up a bit better and I wouldn’t have had to fudge the quilting lines.
And, the quilt is backed with Minky! I know I said that I wouldn’t use Minky again, but it is so nice and cuddly. When I was shopping for the backing, I was looking for a grey and white chevron flannel that I think I had seen at some time in my past. Of course, I couldn’t find it. But, the Minky was the perfect colour … so Minky it was. And really, it does sew very nicely!
Happy Quilting!
Gail

This looks great! I love the gray solid and the Dr. Seuss prints. Lucky Gage! I think all quilts should have a baby on them 🙂

What a great pattern for a baby quilt. Who doesn’t love Dr. Seuss? It’s a very fun little quilt.

Oh what a darling quilt. You did a terrific job “fudging” the quilting lines – I can’t tell and even if I could I’m quite sure that the baby doesn’t mind!

Thanks, Karen! I’m sure the baby doesn’t care if it was fudged or not! Mom is a dental hygienist, so I doubt this baby will see much fudge in it’s early years. This is the only way he’ll get fudge! 🙂

Love, love, love this quilt! What a great pattern and the fabric is awesome, so cute for a baby, but interest will only grow in these fun fabrics as the baby grows. Definitely going to look up this pattern, thanks for sharing the link.

Hi Gail! I love the quilting on this – it is just perfect to reflect the arrow design. I didn’t notice it was Dr. Seuss until you mentioned it. How very cool!! Yay to a nice finish. ~smile~ Roseanne

Hi Roseanne!
Thank you!
This quilt did call for the straight line quilting. I considered free motion, but went with the straight lines as I though the free motion would muddy the waters.

Hahaha… I, too, have sworn that I would never use Minky backing again, and then I don’t use it — until the next baby comes along. It’s kind of like swearing off booze or chocolate. I can only stay away too long… 😉 Your chevron quilt is adorable — great use of those novelty prints and I love how the gray calms down the bright colors and gives your eyes a place to rest. For all its trouble, Minky makes the softest, snuggliest baby quilts ever. It’s always worth it in the end!

Hi Rebecca,
Thank you!
I have a lot of flannel – so will use it for most of the baby quilts, but for the special ones, I may, just maybe use pinkie.
Happy Quilting! 🙂
