Another UFO finish and Almost there!

Retreat Pics 4

I started this at a retreat in 2017.  I loved what my friend, Donna, made and wanted to try out her “Hex ‘n More” ruler.  Donna finished her quilt a LONG time ago … but mine is done now!  🙂

As I’m learning to digitize, I wanted to do an outline of a fox … I took a picture and digitized it with a single stitch.  It didn’t work out great.  You can read about it HERE.  In my last post HERE, I talked about what I had learned doing this.  Below are 2 pictures of the quilting on the back …  I tried to stiple close to the fox, hoping it would make it stand out more … it worked on the back some-what, but not on the front.

The Almost There

For my PHD in 2018 … I needed to complete 28 UFOs and finish all of my 2018 starts … The 28 UFOs are DONE!!!  I have one 2018 start that needs to be quilted and bound.  SEW … I’m Almost There!

PHD in 2019: Quilting UFOs and Finishing New Projects

A blog reader from France asked me what PHD stood for.  Her excellent guess was “Projects Have to be Done!”  Brilliant, eh?  Projects Half Done, Has to be Done … both work for me!

Are you going to join me to accomplish your PHD in 2019?    I still have TOO MANY UFOs to complete.  I did enjoy the challenge of completing all of my 2018 starts.  Plus, I was motivated by those that joined me and encouraged me to complete all that I have set out to do!  You can join us if you want.  Here’s what you need to do.

  1. Make a list of at least 12 UFOs that you want to complete in 2019.
  2. Take a picture of them
  3. Post the picture on
    • your blog
    • a Pinterest board
    • Instagram
  4. Keep track of your 2019 starts & finish them in 2019.  (There are exceptions: BOMs that continue into 2020, Bonnie Hunter’s Mystery, December starts)
  5. Report monthly on your progress.
  6. Feel great with those decreasing UFOs!

  2. Congrats on such a successful year! You almost have your PhD. It’s been fun to watch you work through all those UFOs. I will definitely be joining in 2019. I’m hoping for a lot more success than I had in 2018. I really flunked my PhD this year. But I made progress on most of what was on my list, so it’s all good.

    • Hi Kate,

Yes, you have done well this year! Your progress on everything was great. So what if it didn’t make the PHD criteria? You made progress, and that might be more than you would have done if you hadn’t joined the challenge! Besides, if you want, those projects can be on your list for 2019! 🙂

I agree, its hard to just pick one project from the slide show!

      Happy Quilting! 🙂

  3. Congratulations on your PHD! I knew you could do it! I would be afraid to count all of my UFOs. For 2019 we have a challenge at the shop where I work to list 12 projects and complete one each month. This year, I’ve broken down a quilt I must make into 12 steps with the hope that I get each step done. This quilt is a must do but even so without the challenge I’m afraid it’ll fall to the back burner because of other commitments. Wish me luck! Thanks for sharing your journey on Wednesday Wait Loss.

    • Hi April,
I had to chuckle when I read that you are afraid to count your UFOs.
I’ve kept track since 2007 … but it was only in the past year that I was willing to publicly admit how many I had … and to do something about it! A lot of my sewing room was (still is) tied up with fabric for various projects, plus the space projects take … I wanted more room for fabric! 🙂
      Happy Quilting! 🙂

    • Ha! Ha! Leslee … one day … I aim to be like you … with very few UFOs … and with every project I start, I finish!
Looks like you are enjoying the sun! 🙂
Happy Quilting when you return to winter and snow! 🙂

    • Hi Denise,
Yes, you did read that correctly. I thought I had 56 UFOs at the beginning of January & my goal was to finish half of them. That makes 28, right? However, throughout the year, I found more UFOs … so the number increased a bit. However, 28 UFOs did bite the dust this year! 🙂
I was also challenged to finish every 2018 start … all but one of them are done!
      Happy Quilting! 🙂

  4. Yay for all your UFO finishes! Sounds like you are *almost there*! Me, too! Two 2018 projects need to be completed. One is at the binding stage, easy peasy, and I’m piecing a back for the other. I think I’ll make it! I’m so glad you are continuing into 2019–I’ll be there!

    • Hi Emily,
Oh … I’m SEW happy that you are almost done!!!
And I’m totally glad that you’ll be joining me next year! Doesn’t it feel good to know that your UFO list has NOT increased? I’m loving that!
      Happy Quilting! 🙂

  5. Awesome progress Gail!! You must be feeling so great! Your list of 28 PHDs is a large number and while you still have more to do its put a great dent in the bigger picture.
The race is on to finish our PHD for 2018!!
    Cheers
    Terry

    • Hi Terry!
Yes, 28 was a large large number of UFOs to tackle. But some of the projects were small – others were HUGE! And you’re correct, it did put a dent in the total number!
One more to go & I’ll be getting my PHD in 2018!!
You must be almost there as well?
      Happy Quilting! 🙂
