Colour bleeding

I haven’t had a lot of issues with colour bleeding.  But I have had a few.img_0070

I posted in Oct. 2016 HERE about how the label bled really bad … so bad that I could see it moving quickly and without thinking too much, I cut it out really fast!  I was using a solid green of my grandmother’s fabric … the green went into recycling.  It did not have a long life in my sewing room!  I ended up fixing the disastrous corner and you can read about it HERE.

 

IMG_1036 Then, in Sept. 2017,  there was this scrappy Irish chain Quilt.  The fabric was Kansas Troubles by Moda with Kona snow in the blocks and Free Spirit Mist in the border. (If you look closely, you can see the blue/black tinge in the block and how “clean” the border was.) I was surprized that the black bled! Usually Moda is pretty colour-fast.  You can see the colour discolouration in the block … This quilt was washed with a zillion Color Catchers that came out black.  I ended up re-washing the quilt with blue dawn and most of the colour came out.  Sorry, but I don’t have another picture with most of the colour removed.

Then, someone posted on Facebook the link to this site.  Save my Bleeding Quilt.  I suggest that you go there NOW and download the full instructions and save it on your computer.  Hopefully, you will never need to use them … but it’s good to have it on hand.  And … also have some Blue Dawn by your washing machine!

Daisy Chain Mystery Quilt Along

I’m making the throw size.  It did not take long to cut the fabrics.  I have used post-it notes to label each of the sections.  Below is  a picture of my cut fabric:

Designer Zipper Bag

  3. I have been online friends with Vicki for several years. I love her hand dyed fabrics. So I knew about this method for saving bleeding quilts. When I dye my own fabrics, I use her soaking method to ensure that they don’t bleed. But I also wash every quilt before I sell it or give it away.
    If something goes wrong with one of my quilts, I want it to happen while I can still fix it.

      Well, hopefully Vicki gets more traffic … that post is great!
      I’ve not tried dying fabric … yet … but one day … maybe … perhaps … it might happen … but not in the near future!

      I agree with you … it’s important to wash our quilts before gifting! I would hate for a quilt to be gifted (sold) and to bleed … heartbreaking!

  4. I’ve only had one case where a red bled so badly that it was a problem. Hopefully I won’t see that again. Love your fabrics for the Daisy Chain mystery. I’m looking forward to getting the first clue!

  6. My biggest fear in gifting quilts is the thought of color bleeding. My last few ones I’ve gifted with a color catcher, just to make sure! And even that’s not foolproof. It’s good to know that it often can be fixed. Whew!

    • Hi Sally,
      I ALWAYS wash my quilts before they are gifted. I once had a new mom phone me in tears because she had washed the quilt as I instructed and it was now all “wrinkled.” Sew, to avoid tears, I wash before gifting. As well, I can check for bleeding when the quilt is being washed and take care of the problem right then and there.

  7. I had the same problem with Moda jellyrolls, which included the Kansas Troubles line. The Jelly rolls was from 11 years ago. The quilt I made was 104 inches square. Used 4 jelly rolls and 6 meters of half meter cuts of the same lines. The bleeding was from all the navy, green, black, purple and red fabrics. I wrote to the owner of Moda, explaning what had happened. Also asked them to fix this quality control issue. I was hoping they addressed the problem, so that no other quilter would have to deal with the fabric bleeding problem. So sorry to hear your fabric had this issue. I now wash all fabrics, including jelly rolls. Kona Cardinal red bleeds as well, washed one piece of fabric six times, before my colour catcher came out white, with washing. Your Quilt is beautiful.

      I was given the KT jelly roll from a friend … so it was likely quite old (I think I “stored” it for a few years as well.”
      In my case, the bleeding was just from the black. Weird, eh?

      Did Moda ever reply to you?

      They may have fixed the problem now …
