At our recent quilt show, there was a baby quilt challenge: Welcome to the Zoo. I just didn’t have any ideas at all. Or at least none that were practical and manageable. So, I grabbed a panel from my stash of panels and quilted it up. Just a panel people, a panel!!
Can you imagine my surprise when it was announced that I was the 3rd place winner? I still can’t believe it. It’s a panel. A few people told me that the quilting was amazing. I don’t know about that – but I did quilt it to death! And, it’s still nice & soft. It will be a donation quilt. I will take it back to the guild next month and hand it in.
Here’s a picture of 3rd, 2nd and 31st place.
Quilting with Friends
Today, I was able to quilt with 2 friends … a small group, but it was fun (as always) and we each got a lot done!
Barb was working on the table runner. I love how she quilted it with radiating lines from the centre. And the clothes pins? She said that they work way better than wonder clips for holding the binding in place. What a great idea!!!
Linda was working on these blocks. The blocks had been donated at the guild for a specific purpose – and was rejected for that purpose. Linda brought the blocks home, squared them up and is adding 2½” sashing to the blocks and plans to make a donation quilt. She’s not sure which charity, that’ll depend on the finished size. Linda can always be counted on for using scraps in a unique and useful way!
One who sleeps under a quilt is covered by LOVE!
Happy Quilting!
Gail

I get your surprise because we often look at the piecing for ribbon-winning quilts. But really you outdid yourself with the quilting on this piece. It is such a great way to elevate a panel. I have a few that I picked up at a thrift store and will try to emulate this. My quilting is not on par with yours but it is a good idea and a nice way to practice. Well done!!

Hi Bernie!
Thank you!
Yes, practice on your panels … just in case you didn’t know … there was a time when I didn’t have a clue how to free motion quilt! 🙂
And, babies will not care about the quilting – honest!
Happy Quilting! 🙂

I had to come back on my computer. You should be proud, sometimes its what you do with the fabric instead of the fabric itself as you have just discovered. I’ve seen some really crappy piecing that have won ribbons and wondered what the judges were thinking. It’s really cute. Thank you for linking up with me.

Hi Denise,
Thank you … I’m more in shock than I am proud. But that’s OK … I’ll live with it! 🙂

Hi Becky!
Thank you very much!
Our trek to the east coast was short and sweet! We’ve been basking in the milders west coast weather for a few weeks now! We’ve heard reports of snow … and here the daffs, tulips and lilacs are finished. Roses are blooming and I have some of the garden planted. 🙂
Happy Quilting! 🙂

Hi Gail!! Well, panel or not it is a fabulous finish. You did a great job on quilting it – that’s what puts the piece over the top in my mind. Besides, aren’t whole cloth quilts all the rage now? You trendsetter you. {{Hugs}} Enjoy that ribbon and display it proudly as it is well deserved. Quilting with friends is just the best since I get to do that everyday. I love the radiating pattern she used on her runner. Did she use a ruler? And those fabrics in the reject block is so pretty. Adding that sashing just finishes it off nicely and lets those pretty colors shine. ~smile~ Roseanne

Hi Roseanne,
Thank you!
I originally bought panels to practice free motion quilting … that didn’t happen. I have a few more panels hanging around … I should pull them out more often!
No, Barb did not use a ruler … she was just quilting away with her walking foot.
I’ll have to let Linda know what you think of her blocks!
Happy Quilting, my friend! 🙂

Congratulations. You did a fabulous job on the quilting and the border material. That is encouragement to all of us that quilt panels are worthy of the special effort. I have quite a few panels that I need to sew up.
