Top it Off

October’s Island Batik challenge is “Top It Off.”   We were told to create a holiday themed table runner or table topper that includes appliqué.   Well, you all know how much I love applique (NOT!!).  However, with my Janome 500E embroidery machine, applique has become SEW much easier!

I had attempted to get this runner finished before I went on my month long trip.  Unfortunately, that didn’t happen.  I had appliquéd each end with 3 pumpkins separately, using batting as a stabilizer. When I came home, while still jet-lagged, I cut off the batting surrounding each piece. UGG!!!

How frustrating!  I had intended to trim the top portions, leaving the batting there.  Instead, I now needed to add batting to the sides, top and bottom.  I attempted to zig-zag the extra batting on and ended up with a gathered batting mess!  Sew, I cut it off and used my trusty Elmer’s School Glue (diluted) to piece the batting.  It worked like a charm!

Except for the background, I used left-over fabric from the “Soil & Seed” quilt, see HERE.

The pumpkins were made with 2 different orange fabrics – and they are the same fabrics used in the border.

The cornerstones were one of the green fabrics from this collection and the 2 leaves in the middle were from another green. The binding is the dark brown seen in the bottom right of the photo.

This fabric was perfect for this project!

The green leaves were fun to do!  The stitching pattern was to stitch the whole leaf.  I did not want that, I wanted it appliqued.  SEW, using my trusty digitizing software and my limited knowledge of how to make it work, I was able to change it to an applique design! (Yeah me!)

This table runner was quilted with Aurifil thread (2000 on the background and 2370 on the borders), and Hobbs 80/20 batting.  The backing is an Island Batik yellow, “Snow Trees – Honey Elk.”

  1. This is so adorable! Have you put together a pattern for this? I love the fact that you were able to overcome a mistake. I have a few projects that are sitting because of a mistake. You encourage me to get them out and figure out a way to move forward.

    • Thanks, Boo! No, I haven’t put a pattern together. The pumpkins are applique / embroidery patterns from Anita Goodesigns (Autumn Harvest 2).
      There is always a way to fix a mistake! Sometimes, it can be a simple fix … other times, it becomes more complex … but there is always a way!
      Good luck figuring out how to move forward with your mistakes! 🙂

  10. Your pumpkins are sew fun!!!! I love their faces! I have learned that I can’t cut when I’m tired, or I do things that I yell at myself for later!

      I, too, have learned that I shouldn’t cut when I’m tired … but it seems to be a lesson that I have to learn over and over and over!

  12. I never thought of glue basting batting together. I’ve always used a stitch that looks like a trellis (used for seaming stretch material I think) to link to pieces of batting butted together. Those pumpkins with their embroidered vines are adorable.

    • I will often use a very big & wide zig-zag … but only after it’s glued. I find that no matter how careful I am, one side always gathers up. So glue is my friend!
