Meet Randy the Rhino!!!  He is one of the wonderful patterns available at Funky Friends Factory!  If you sign up for the Funky Friends newsletter, you can get a free pattern for a bear!  And Funky Friends provide fantastic directions as well as pictorial tutorials.

Many of my fellow Island Batik ambassadors made various Funky Friends for Houston Quilt market.  Talk about cute!  EVERY. SINGLE. ONE.   I didn’t sign up because of the lack of time at the time.

Randy is made with “Mini Bubbles” from the Island Batik “Islander” collection!   I was going to save this picture until December to show him with my other  December projects – but I couldn’t wait!!!  (Island Batik provided the fabric for Randy!)

I choose to make Randy as a reminder of my trip to Africa.  We saw both white and black rhinos!  And black rhinos are the same colour as the white rhinos!  (They’re called ‘black’ due to a translation error about the shape of their mouths.) We learned to differentiate between them by the humps on the back and how they carry their heads.  Randy is closest to a black rhino as his head is up.

Borders need to be added to Smith Mountain Morning, and the pink & blue squirrels.

These pillow shams were finished.  I used 1 yard of fabric from my stash.  I also made 2 placemats for the guild – which used 1/2 yard.

  3. Your Mountain Morning quilt is really speaking to me — it’s just beautiful, and I can see it tucked around a cozy bed in a mountain cabin with a fresh snowfall outside the window. And that little rhinoceros is adorable — batiks are PERFECT for these little creatures!

      Smith Mountain Morning is a beautiful quilt! It’s in Bonnie Hunter’s book: Scraps & Shirttails II. If you know how to use tri-rec rulers, it’s easy to make. Although she does have templates to use instead. Beware – as with most of Bonnie’s patterns – there is a LOT of piecing!
      Yes, batiks are perfect for Funky Friends!

  4. Randy is adorable and I’m happy to hear you say that the directions are really written well with pictures to boot. I just started the hedgehog by the same company. Hope to post pictures soon!

    • Thanks, Gene! His eye’s are buttons – about 3/8″ across. I could not find ANY child eyes less than 1″ across! Sew Randy is not child proof! But, that’s totally OK, because I’m keeping him! 🙂

  8. Oh my gosh, Randy is soooo cute! My son saw it and now wants me to make him one. I already made him an owl from Funky Friends! Thanks for the fun fact about rhinos–I did not know that! Love the bubbles fabric!

  11. Hi Gail! Randy is just plain adorable. Those little ears – so sweet. I didn’t know there are black and white rhinos. I’ll have to go Google them to learn more about their differences.     • Thanks, Roseanne! Niether black nor white rhinos look anything like the pretty fabric I used. They’re mostly a dirty white/grey – at least where we were.
