3D Challenge #1

IMG_5738When this challenge was first mentioned, it sort-of indicated that it was to be something 3D … so I got to thinking … bags, sewing machine covers … oh the possibilities.  Then, in late September, a quilt was indicated.  Something with a 3D effect.  I knew exactly which quilt to make and which fabric to use!!

The quilt is Island Chain from Kim Brackett’s book “Scrap-Basket Sensations.”  The fabric I used was 40 – 2½ strips from a collection called “Islander.”  Perfect, eh?  And, I used Island Batik’s solid white.  The border is a co-ordinating fabric called “Turtle-Marb.”

This is one quilt where organization is KEY!!!  If you make it, make sure that you follow directions and number each of your fabrics.  A friend of mine, Martha, had made this quilt before and I remember her telling me how important it was to number each one.  And I followed the book’s directions and Martha’s advise and had no problems at all.  I don’t think I used my seam ripper once … but I could be delusional – I honestly don’t see how that could possibly be true!

The above picture is all my fabric numbered at the start.  I did change a few of them around once I realized that with 2 strips of each fabric, I needed to be a bit more careful with placement.

Here it is, laid out on my design wall – just to make sure that the loops all linked togther properly!  This quilt is sewn together on point … so each row was pieced diagonally, then sewn together.  There is no easy way to web an on-point quilt. (if you know of an easy way – let me know!!!)

A close-up of the quilting!  I used Hobbs Tuscany Collection 100% Wool.  Since my quilt was bigger than 60×60″ I went to a local store & bought 1/3 yard of 90″ Hobbs 100% batting. The batting was joined together.  I LOVE how this batting gives a great loft to the quilt.  The coloured areas popped up too much, so I used invisible monofilament thread ¼” from the edges on the the coloured loops to tap them down a tad.  The white/negative space is feathers and orange peels.

I thoroughly enjoyed making this quilt!!!

      It’s an easy quilt to make: as long as you stay organized and number each of your fabrics!
      I think that the reason this one is so beautiful is because of the beautiful Island Batik fabrics!

  6. I love this quilt, Gail. It makes me want that book so that I can make one of my own. LOL. Like I need another project!
    I think I can guess what type of quilt #2 will be. I am looking forward to it.

    • Thanks, Gene! Of course you need another project! 🙂 The book has quite a few nice quilts in it! Many of them are 2 1/2″ strip friendly. Ah, but project #2 is not a quilt … stay tuned! 🙂

      I agree, Islander is awesome. But to be honest, I haven’t seen an Island Batik collection that I don’t like!
