Smith Mountain Morning is DONE, done, DONE!!!

I started this quilt while at a workshop with Bonnie Hunter at Camp Arnold in 2015.  I’ve been working on it pretty steady for the last few months.  I made it bigger than the pattern … it is 89″ x 89″

IMG_5775I did graffiti quilting, using Aurifil #2000 and just over 9 bobbins!  It took me quite a while to quilt it!  I used Hobbs 80/20 for batting!  I’m almost through the roll that I bought  a year ago!

This is my 13th UFO for this year!  Now, as soon as I get 3 little baby quilts completed, I will have acheived my PHD in 2019!

PHD in  2020?

I’ve been asked if I’m going to do the PHD in 2020 … The answer is YES YES YES!!!

I have a ton of UFOs still left to do –  so, I’m going to continue doing this.  It certainly helps me to complete old UFOs and with finishing all the new starts, I don’t add to my UFO list.  Win-win, wouldn’t you say?  I’ll be posting more about this in the near future!  In the meantime, gather up your UFOs and be ready to join in the fun!

One who sleeps under a quilt is covered by LOVE!

  3. Congratulations! It always feel great when an oldie but goodie gets done. I applaud your effort at getting your UFOs down. I have been working at it since 2016 and have made a good dent. I now feel like most will be done by the end of 2020. I need thought I would say that.

  7. Graffiti quilting was new to me as a term. Seems I’ve done it myself. I was heavily influenced by love of intense quilting and Zentangles. I tend to graffiti quilt in open areas. I never would have thought to try it on quilt with such a prominent design using traditional blocks. Now you have me thinking. Thanks…

      Graffiti quilting is sort of like Zentangle quilting – only on a bigger scale! When I make Bonnie Hunter’s quilts, they are so busy with fabric, that custom quilting is a waste – you don’t see it. So on her quilts, (as far as I’m concerned) … anything goes! 🙂

      Yes, it feels fantastic!
      I always do my own quilting on my domestic sewing machine … I quilt so many, that I wouldn’t be able to afford to have them long-armed.

      Graffiti quilting is a little of this and a little of that … or I quilt a feather, then a flower, then some triangles, maybe a teardrop or two, then a couple of swirls, and whatever I feel like doing next! It’s fun to do … no rules! 🙂

  16. Hi Gail! Big huge congrats to you and a finish from a 2015 project. Yay! Doesn’t that just feel terrific?! I’d like to see pictures of your quilting as well! The border looks cool – are the HSTs alternating blue/brown? They sure are a fabulous finishing addition. ~smile~ Roseanne

      OK … I’ll take some pics of the quilting! I’ll have to wait for it to stop raining! We grabbed the picture between rain storms, so it was a quick pic!
      The border is actually tri-rec blocks with a blue on one side & brown on the other … I just followed the instructions – and added a ton more since I was making it bigger!
