I LOVE Scrappy Quilts!!!

It was fun to go through my box of Island Batik fabrics and make a scrappy quilt.  I wanted one that would cover my embroidery machine.  I ended up making 2.  The first one, I used my Accuquilt cutter and cut a zillion half-square triangles.  I love that the triangles were cut perfectly and were SEW easy to so and made for perfect HSTs.  However, I was not happy with the end result.  With the great variety of  scrappy pinwheels, it just ended up looking disjointed.  Not something to make me smile when I walk into my sewing room … so it became a bag to keep my Accuquilt Go cutter in.  You can read about it HERE.

The 2nd quilt is one that I’m VERY happy with and will enjoy seeing it covering my embroidery machine!  I used fall colours, many left-over from the “Soil and Seeds” collection that I used in a blog-hop quilt.  (See HERE)  And, I used other co-ordinating fabrics from Island Batik foundations, basics and stash buster bundles.  The background fabric is “Coconut,” an Island Batik foundations neutral.  I LOVE this neutral!

The 4 patch blocks are made with 2″ squares and end up being 3 ½” finished in the quilt. The batting is Hobbs 80/20.  The binding is 2″ scraps, left over from making the blocks.

This quilt was first drawn up in EQ7.  I followed the plan, except that once I had the centre together, I opted for a border of the same fabric as the background.  When I auditioned other fabrics for the border, it just didn’t look right and I felt that the “Coconut” fabric gave it a cleaner look.  And, it showed off the scrappy binding!

This quilt was quilted on my Janome 8900. I used Aurifil thread #2310 for the quilting.  I wanted the quilting to show on the neutral, and I’ve found that having a low-contrast thread does that!  Each 3½” neutral block had a different motif in it … some of them are repeated in the setting triangles.  It was a lot of fun to quilt this.

Here it is, covering my embroidery machine.  Oh, and the backing is “Snow Trees Honey Elk Lodge,” also by Island Batik.

    • Thanks, Susan. The lack of border was based on the fact that I didn’t have enough fabric of the one I wanted to border it with! 🙂 Makes for a rational decision if you ask me! 🙂

  6. I love the different quilting motifs in the Coconut squares! That was my neutral in the most recent ambassador box and I also love it! This is beautiful and looks very you!

  7. I’ve wanted to make a cover for my Bernina, but the thought of figuring out the sizing and make it with seams to actually fit over the machine has put me off. I was delighted to see that you simply made a small quilt and draped it over your machine. I could handle that. Thanks.

      The cover that came with the embroidery machine was just a huge sheet of plastic … that’s what gave me the idea to do the quilt for the cover. And, I don’t need to worry about the thread holder being raised or lowered!

  11. Great cover for your embroidery machine, Gail! It works perfectly, and I love the bag for the AccuQuilt cutter. Those things are wonderful! I purchased the GOBig several years ago and it is a time and arm saver!!

  14. This is very pretty, Gail. Putting the 4-patches on point really perk up the design. And the coconut fabric as background allow for the quilting to really show.

  16. GAIL!!! I love this quilt. It is nice and scrappy in a pretty way – nothing clashes which sometimes happens in scrappy quilts. On point setting is cute, but best of all is your quilting. Nothing to take away from the pretty quilt, but how fun that you tried different things in the neutral squares. I’d say your embroidery machine is covered in STYLE. Love this. ~smile~ Roseanne
