Sew … what’s been happening around here?

Well, Helen Godden (on Facebook Helen Godden Quilts) had a Flower Power Quilt-a-long.  I was thinking of doing it for a future Island Batik challenge, but all of the specifics for the challenge are not available, yet.  SEW … I thought I’d share it with you.  If you are on Facebook, you can go to her page and download all of the pictures.  She has directions on how to do each of the blocks with a Youtube video for each block.  It’s fantastic for practicing free motion quilting!

These were done on an Island Batik neutral fabric … with Hobbs 80/20 batting, Aurifil black thread and Schmetz microtex needle.  (All of the supplies were given to me via Island Batik).

I have done 8 of the 9 blocks … They are SEW fun to do.  I LOVE the zen doodling!  And I’ve learned a few new-to-me patterns.

The other thing, is that I ventured into the world of colouring fabric.  Helen talks about “Inktense” pencils and how you colour your fabric with them.  From another Youtube video, I learned that you colour, spray with water and then press with an iron to stop the spread of colour or bleeding.  That’s how my blocks got their colour!  I was able to get a set of Inktense pencils at a near-by store that does curb-side service!  (Opus, in Langley).

I will show you the finished wall hanging … hopefully it’ll be done soon!

I’m working on an Island Batik challenge – so no photos yet!

IMG_6288Florabunda:  Do you remember when I was working on these blocks? Well, they are all done and I have way more than enough for one quilt … so there are at least 2 quilts to be made.  I need to lay them out and decide on which ones will go into which quilt.

I easily managed to get everything on my list done … and more!

I completed 18 masks and 12 pillow cases.  When I went to originally take a picture of the 7 pillow cases that were started, I realized they were mostly all “girl” types.  Sew … back to the stash and I made 5 that are more suited for the male gender.

The fronts of the Round Robins were Island Batik – so I don’t count that.  But the backs took 3 yards.  The pillow cases used up 12 yards.  The masks used up 3.5 yards … for a total of 18.5 yards!

  1. Inktense is awesome. I have the chalks, which work the same, but don’t have quite the same clear colour. They cover bigger areas though, and the pencils are on my wish list. Your coloured blocks look great. Thanks for sharing at the Chameleon’s Colour party.

      I sure enjoyed playing with the Inktense pencils! When I bought them, I didn’t even know that there were chalks! But that’s OK because I’m perfectly fine with the pencils!

  3. Hi Gail! I followed along with Helen and enjoyed every minute of it. I could watch others quilt for hours. Her technique for coloring is very similar to what Sue is doing on her embroidery project with crayons. Two Florabunda is twice as nice – I love these blocks and layout.       Helen makes it look easy!!! I just do my best and that’s good enough for me! This is the first time I’ve attempted colouring – except for a stem (once).

  4. Gail, these blocks are gorgeous! I downloaded the patterns but will not start right now, too many other projects. I can’t wait to see all your flowers together. How did you like the inktense pencils? I’ve heard about them a few other places and am very curious, but they are pricey. I’d want to be sure I’d use them enough to be worth it.

      Thank you!!! They were really fun to do!

      I bit the bullet and ordered the 24 set. Yes, they are pricey! But I have enjoyed doing it very very much! I’m sure I’ll use them again and again.
      One of the fabrics in my purple Round Robin was really a faint mauve, and it looked white when I had the quilt together. Well, with the Inktense purple pencil, it changed the colour of the block and I was much happier! Sew … I can see other times I’ll use them!

  7. You have been productive. I bought my Inktense Pencils from Opus Langley as well. I dye some of my own fabric and am always looking for new techniques. Unfortunately, since we moved in late November, I have done no dyeing, nor glass etching. I am barely even quilting. But, I am working on a fun cross stitch, so all is not lost. 🙂 Eventually I will play again.
    Those are gorgeous flower blocks. Well done.

      I haven’t tried dying fabric yet … just don’t feel the need to … yet. Never say ‘never’ – right?

  8. These are awesome, Gail! I have some of those pencils and need to play more with them. I joined Helen’s facebook group but haven’t gotten around to doing anything yet as I have a couple of other projects in the making! Even in quarantine, time slips away! Plus going on week 7 of these darn shingles which throw a curve in everything fun!

      Yes, it will be fun to see if you do the Flower Power blocks! They are fun and the videos aren’t going to disappear anytime soon … so you can do them when you’re ready!
