Yes, another blog Hop.  This one is fun … all about Squares!

When I was thinking about this blog hop, I was thinking about quilts with squares … what can be more square than a Disappearing 9 Patch? And I need a baby quilt for a baby to be born in the future!

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_37feSo …  I looked through my “kids” box and came up with this fabric.  I think I had a Disappearing 9 patch in mind when I bought it.

When I started cutting the squares, I got cross with myself!  First, when I bought the fabric, I obviously wasn’t thinking about how these panels are rarely square.  This one proved it.  Second, as I cut the squares, they came out at “stupid” size.  Who in their right mind wants to cut squares that are 4 3/8″ … no one.  Certainly not me!

However, I wanted to use this fabric and so I persevered, cutting each little block at 4 3/8″.   The green became the centre block, the animals were in the 4 corners and the yellow was the middle blocks.  (Sorry, I forgot to take a picture.)  When the blocks were all made, they were cut in half, horizontally and vertically.  Then arranged on the design wall, webbed together and sewn into a top.LBGxAUQRSt6gvOa5ORDJTg_thumb_3805

I know that some eagle eyes will notice that the binding is not completed on the lower right corner of the quilt … I like to sew the label into the binding, but I can’t make the label until the baby is born … it’ll be a quick finish once I have the baby’s details!

It was a fun quilt to quilt!  Each animal was outlined and then micro-stippled around it.  The blocks were all stitched in the ditch.  The green blocks had orange peels around them.  Swirls were stitched in all the yellow areas.

  2. In spite of 4-3/8, the quilt came out fabulous! The way the animal directions flip around gives a lot of movement. Wonderful job!

      The one thing I always try to remember when I leave binding open for finishing is to include a little note with what thread I was using … nothing more frustrating in having to figure that out!

  16. OMG that was the perfect way to use those little panel animals. It was worth your time to cut them to the 4 3/8″. Hmmm seems to me I might have some little panel animals in the cupboard. Hey cut that out I don’t need to start something new right now, LOL

  17. Beautiful finish and a perfect baby quilt! The green and yellow fabrics you picked are wonderful and give this quilt a very different look from most DP9 Patch quilts. Well worth the extra effort to cut the odd size squares. I find panels are very often like that, odd sizes and hard to cut square sometimes. What a great idea to leave the corner open to add the label. Thanks for sharing … 🙂 Pat

  19. Panel prints are so cute, but they do come in strange sizes. You have mastered them with this quilt though. Great job. It is just adorable. Some special little one is going to cherish it! 🙂

  20. Isn’t it frustrating how panel prints are printed unevenly? At least they could leave wider margins around the motifs….but you rescued these wonderfully!

  22. I love this… I know that cutting those squares had to get a bit on the tedious size. I wouldn’t have been happy with the 4 3/8s sizes either as it’s hard to follow that kind of line on a ruler, but you did an amazing job of it. I also love how this is quilted. It really makes those animals stand out.

      From one of the free motion instructors (not sure who), they said that the area you don’t quilt is the area that will stand out. That certainly worked for this quilt!

  27. What a sweet quilt and your care in the quilting just really shows the love you put into it. I love how you took those measurements in stride. I agree, why can’t panels be better? Accuracy counts so much you would think that it would be important to create a panel that is.

      Thank you! It did take a lot of time to quilt! but I enjoyed it!
      I think it might be safe to assume that panel designers figure their panels will be used “as is.” And they don’t consider that people may have other uses for them!
