Layer Cake Quilts

Last year, I made 2 quilts using layer cakes. Both were easy patterns, but I like how they turned out quite different.

These were both made with different French General Layer Cakes. One had browns and the other had blues in it. Of course, the different sashing also gives it a different look.

This first one was Anita’s Arrowhead by Anita Grossman Solomon. The technique is a little different, but easy when you follow directions. I only used (40) 10″ squares with this quilt … Yardage was used for the cornerstones and sashing.

And this one is from a youtube video by Sharon Craig called “Layer Em Up.” (42) 10″ squares were used for this one. Grey yardage for the sashing. I added the sashing so that I didn’t have to match seams. (grin)

Island Batik calls their 10″ squares “stacks”. I have a few layer cakes and at least 1 Stack that I’m hoping to use this year. I want to do something different besides the above quilts. Who knows if I’ll design my own quilt or use a different pattern.

  1. Hi Gail, those are two very lovely quilts. I’ve only discovered French General fabrics and a quilt store owner said that the new fabrics in the spring will be yellow and blue – that sounds wonderful. I may have to investigate (and invest!). I’ve only bought one layer cake but I haven’t done anything with it yet. I have bought the smaller pre-cuts (5″) of batiks. 3 packages make a lovely lap quilt just joining the squares together. I’m getting to enjoy very simple quilts as I spend more time doing more artsy stuff. I have a couple of real quilts to make, with cutting and everything – and it’s quite the challenge.     • Hi Andrée!
      The Fr. General layer cakes that I used were bought several years ago. And the latest lines have similar colours. It’ll be interesting to see the yellow and blue line!
      Sewing charm packs to make a quilt IS making a REAL quilt! It’s just different than other quilts, but it’s still a quilt!

  3. I grinned when you mentioned using sashing to avoid having to worry about matching seams! I have to admit that’s always a huge factor in whether I add sashing to a design. Can you believe I’ve never purchased a layer cake? I’m not much for pre-cuts in general though I have purchsed a couple of fat quarter bundles.

  7. Neat! I recognized the “Anita’s Arrowhead” immediately – the quilt on my bed right now has several of those in the design. It is a fun block to make once you “get” it.

  12. Hi Gail! I am just working on a secret sewing project using 10″ squares that I’m going to write a pattern for as well. I can’t share details until the end of February though so you might not want to wait. I love both of these quilts and think adding the sashing to avoid point matching is brilliant. Sounds exactly like something I’d want to do as well. ~smile~ Roseanne
