Things your friends tell you

Sometimes it’s a lot of fun! Sometimes, it just gets you into trouble!!!

Four of us met in the park on a sunny afternoon to visit and show our latest projects. Part of the conversation went like this:

One: Did you know there’s a new store in town … a fabric store?

All of us: NO! Where???

One: gives us the address (downtown Cloverdale, across from where the liquor store used to be) Edit: 5625 176 St Cloverdale (Surrey) BC.

The rest of us: What do they have?

One: I’m not sure, the sign said fashion and quilting

The rest of us: We’ll have to check it out.

Yesterday, one of the gals checked it out … Today I checked it out.

It’s bright, cheerful and the owners were VERY welcoming!!! It’s called Essem Textiles. On a rack outside the store, she has some cute little tops that must fit a size 0-4 adult … um, not for me! But inside … See what I mean about bright and cheerful? (and yes, I ‘borrowed’ this picture from Essem’s Intstagram) AND, I LOVE all the notions on the back wall!

This store is NEW … really new … they opened last week! They are still working on their website and they plan to have mail-order (am I correct?) but I do know she mentioned curb-side pick-up. They have a small selection “grunge,” bella solids, fireside and flannel. The prices are reasonable.

Oh yes, I did mention trouble, didn’t I? Well, if you’ve been following my blog for very long, you know that I am working EXTREMELY hard to NOT buy any fabric. NONE. NADA. Well, I did use my credit card and walked out with a bag of fabric. In my defense though – it’s all for quilt backings … a necessary purchase, right?

And, this store is about a 15-20 minute walk from my home. Is that going to be dangerous? Maybe, maybe not …

Island Batik Blog Hop

The 2nd week of the hop is over. Did you catch all of the beautiful quilts? A HUGE variety! And of course, they are all made with wonderful Island Batik fabric! Click HERE for a list of this week’s quilters.

And, in case you missed it, here’s my quilt, using the Napa Valley collection. You can read more about the process HERE. (And while you’re there you can enter either my give-away or Island Batik’s for free fabric!)

One who sleeps under a quilt is covered by LOVE!

Happy Quilting!

  2. Oh dear, Gail — you can WALK to this new quilt shop?!! This is terrible. Because now not only can you rationalize that you’re buying fabric to support a local business, but you can ALSO justify a trip to the fabric store as “getting some exercise to get your steps in” for the day! Better start clearing out cupboards to prepare for the Stash Expansion that is on its way… 😉

    • Ah Laceflower,
you have a wonderful quilt store near the Johnston St bridge and another in Goldstream , as well as Hamels moved out to Sooke, .. there may be others but I don’t know about them.

  4. You have the best kind of friends! How fun to have a new fabric shop in town. Sorry about you going off the wagon — but if you don’t have backings you can’t finish quilts. That seems so reasonable to me!

  5. Oh boy….
Don’t you go for a daily walk? 15-20 minutes sounds really dangerous to me…

But, I have to say it’s extremely nice to hear about a business OPENING in these times!!
    Cheers

    • Hi Norma,
Yes, I made this. Started with a technique I learned in a class, put the pieces together, placed them on the design wall, sewed them together and quilted it on my domestic sewing machine … all done by me! 🙂

  6. You are so lucky to have fabric shops nearby, the closest for me is now like 25 miles away. Your quilt is very pretty and I love the way you quilted it. Thank you for linking up to Put your foot down.

  7. Hi Gail! Friends can get us into a whole bunch of trouble of the good persuasion. Backing fabrics are a necessity especially when your goal is to finish up some UFOs. Often our stash just doesn’t have enough big pieces to put together for an appropriate backing. Sue and I just had a similar experience with a new store that opened a year ago (what a time to open) that we hadn’t heard about. We had to check it out, too. ~smile~ Roseanne

    • Hi Roseanne!
I’m glad you understand! One of the quilts that has been on my “TO DO” list (make the backing) has been pushed aside because I didn’t really want to use the fabric I had left over from the top to make the back and nothing in my stash was ‘right’. However, one of the fabrics I bought yesterday is PERFECT!!!! That makes me SEW happy!
