Shades of Blue: Sew It – Show It Challenge

In November, Carla from Creatin’ in the Sticks announced the Sew It – Show It Challenge: Shades of Blue. How could I resist? Blue is my absolute favourite colour!!

I have a LOT of blue flying geese and half-square triangles that I have made as a leader and ender project. I put them together to make these 3 table toppers. (All different sizes since my table tops are different sizes!) They use all sorts of Island Batik fabrics from my Island Batik scraps. That means that they were left-overs from some projects and pieces from stash-builder rolls.

Hobbs batting (80/20) is in the middle and they are Free-motion quilted with Aurifil #2600 (Dove Grey).

I taught a binding class to a wonderful group of ladies this week and thought these 3 little table toppers would be perfect for demonstrating my easy method of machine binding!

Here’s a closeup of 2 different stitches that can be used for securing the binding down.

Here’s the list of all the “Shades of Blue” Blog Hoppers. They all have awesome “blue” projects and it’s well worth visiting each and every one of them!

  2. Very pretty table runners, Gail! All of those blues are very pretty. I love the purples and teals thrown in also. What is that background fabric? It’s gorgeous! I’ve tried the wavy line on a small project to see how it went, which I was pleased with! Binding by machine is definitely quicker than by hand!

    • Thanks, Brenda. The background fabric is a chevron that I bought at a store and promptly forgot to put the colour name with the fabric. I fell in love with it when I saw it and bought several meters! 🙂

  3. lovely quilts and fun ways to do the binding. I had trouble loading your website, it wasn’t showing your pictures, I refreshed several times before it worked (and I have FAST internet) so don’t know if it’s on your end, even your top banner took a while to load.

  4. Love those pretty blue batiks! They sure sewed up into some gorgeous table runners. Thanks for sharing on my weekly show and tell, Wednesday Wait Loss.

  5. Hi Gail, those are great table toppers and I’m sure that they were perfect for your class. I’ve never used decorative stitching for my binding – I’ll have to keep that in mind. BTW,
I did it! I joined the SAHRR – and finished my round 1. Now to post it! Have a great weekend and thanks for linking up to Free Motion Mavericks.

  6. I like all of them, but FG are one of my favorite patterns to do. Beautiful job of quilting and binding. How nice to bring your own work to demonstrate to the class how to do something.

    • Thanks, Kathleen! I did 2 of the samples in class so they could see it in “real life.” One participant was having trouble with her machine and she chose one of the patterns and sewed her’s on my machine! Such fun!

  7. I love the colors and how the textures appear after they are quilted…kind of vintage looking. You did a lovely job on these and the binding stitches are so cute!

  8. You have some fun blue scraps. The table toppers all turned out beautifully. I never considered using decorative stitches to finish a binding, Those create a very nice finish.

  9. Great table toppers! I like seeing your binding technique since I always do machine binding too. Normally I topstitch it with a blanket stitch or a straight stitch, but I have used some other decorative stitches too. The finished product looks great that way. Thanks for sharing!

  10. Thanks for sharing your projects Gail, and especially the pictures showing your quilting. I love to get ideas for projects from someone who has already been down the road.
