Quilting for a Friend

This is the first time I’ve quilted a quilt for a friend. It has been an honour to quilt it. I typically refuse to quilt for my friends! I’m more than willing to help them learn to quilt … but I don’t want to quilt their quilts. However, Amy passed away last year. Her husband contacted me this spring, stating that she had started a quilt for their daughter. It’s a Jacqueline de Jonge quilt called “Catch Me.” I remember her showing us as she progressed along. I remember being amazed at the intricacy of the pattern and all the colours! Amy had quilted the flying geese and triangles around 2 of the stars. She had quilted in the ditch. That’s as far as she got. SIGH!!!

I knew I could quilt in the ditch … probably not with the skill that Amy had … but I could do it!! I brought the quilt home and it sat for a few weeks. I had a few ‘deadline’ quilts to finish. And to be honest, I was feeling a bit overwhelmed!

Although I wasn’t sure which threads Amy had used, a lady at Chitter Chatter Fabrics helped me select colours that had been used in the quilting. Part of the solution was easy as I knew that Amy loved using Glide thread.

Finally, I started! Using my domestic sewing machine: Janome M7 … First, I outlined all of the black areas by stitching in the ditch.

Then I started outlining all of the triangles and flying geese. But, I neglected to take any pictures. I started out by using Silly Moon’s “Rocket” ruler and then switched to “Charming” since it’s smaller, but still has the ‘guides’ for stitching in the ditch. For the ‘spokes’ of the stars, I used “Jelly.” All other areas were free motioned.

  4. That quilt is absolutely amazing. It is sooo gorgeous—The fabrics, the quilting, the design—They are all breathtaking. I know I would never be able to accomplish anything like it.

    • Jacqueline De Jonge has beautiful colourful quilts! I’m not sure I’d be willing to tackle the top! It’s a lot of precise paper piecing and Amy did an awesome job!

  6. Wow! Gail – this is beautiful and what an awesome gift- and wonderful way to honor your friend.Im sure her daughter will cherish it. Well done. Happy sewing to you – I packed my little machine in the RV but so far it hasn’t come out to play! Hopefully one day soon if we stay put for more than one day! Hahaha

  8. Hello, My name is Sharon and I’ll be 85 in Sept. I’ve been quilting for many years, mostly utility quilts. Now it’s mostly smallish utility quilts and small projects. HA! I was late joining in your SAHRR as the first of the year was a blur being unwell and in hosp/rehab, but I finished it…..although it finished it my way but still using the ‘suggestions’ for each round as I’m still learning. It ended up with the ‘Kite’s’ going across the top and then I suddenly needed a quilt for a 3year old great-grandnephew. It wasn’t large enough so I added side and bottom from a RBR I had done but not completed. It’s ready to send to my quilter and she will finish it up for me. I hope you can see what I did for the RR. After I had it together, I noticed the ¼ log cabin at the top looks like a G, which is the first letter of my last name. Lol Along with the S on each side of the barn. I can now cross RR off my bucket list. Thank you. Sharon Gratz
