Sunday Summary: March 22

Kate, from Life in Pieces, is hosting “Stitching Stuff” and the goal is to sew for at least 15 minutes a day. I use Kate’s guideline, but my personal goal is to sew for 30 minutes a day. On those “blah” days, it does motivate me to sit at my machine and 30 minutes often turns into several hours. Thank you Kate for the motivation!

Design Wall Mondays

Judy, at Small Quilts and Doll Quilts, hosts a linky party for “What’s on your Design Wall” every week.

Piecing projects:

  • Toni’s Garden – is a sew-a-long that started in January … It looks pretty, so I decided to join in! (check it out HERE). The first is fused and needs to be sewn down. Am deciding if I want to trapunto the flowers?
  • Patterns by Jen – 2026 Monthly Colour Challenge
  • Rainbow Scrap Challenge: Red for March

Quilting Projects:

  • Guild Baby Quilt Challenge
  • Bind Hospice quilt that is quilted.

Donna at Quilt Paint Create hosts a weekly linky party where you can display your stash numbers. This has really kept my stash from growing (somewhat!) Before I buy anything, I am always mindful of the fact that I need to report it on my blog … That sometimes stops me in my tracks!

No shopping so far this year! No finishes that I can show! So the main numbers do not change this week!

  • Fabric used this week: 0 yards
  • Fabric Used in 2026:     61.5 yards (46.5 yards from non-Island Batik)
  • Fabric Added in the last week: 0 yards
  • Fabric Added this year:   0 yards
  • Net Fabric used:            61.5 yards

Rainbow Scrap Challenge

March’s colour is RED . I have two 9 patch blocks using scraps of Island Batik (Lumin Fabrics) and a quilt using fabric from my stash.

I have participated in the monthly colour challenge with Patterns by Jen in past years. There was a break last year, but Jen is back with the monthly blocks this year. The theme is frogs … here is what Jen says about the theme: This year our color inspiration is coming from the amazing frog. I was a little concerned as I started researching frog colors that there wouldn’t be enough colors for the year, I mean, they are all green, right? 😉 Imagine my delight when I found frogs of (almost) every color of the rainbow, as well as a black frog that makes me want to take him home and love him.

Each month, the patterns are free, but when the month is over, there is a small fee to pay for the pattern. I got behind on sewing the blocks, but did download the patterns for the first 3 months this year. As with all my previous monthly colour challenges, I am using scraps of Island Batik (Lumin Fabrics). Here is my March block and the other blocks so far.

Did you know there were AQUA frogs?

This is a Sew-a-long by Red Boot Quilt Company. Here is the first block, fused, but not sewn. I am using Island Batik fabrics.

Worldwide Quilting Day!

Often, on Worldwide Quilting Day, I can be found hanging out quilts for the drivers-by and neighbours to see. But on this sunny Saturday, that isn’t happening. Instead, I’ll be going for a long walk and quilting my heart out!

TGIFF and a quick finish!

This week, it’s my turn to host TGIFF!!! If you weren’t aware, Thank Goodness It’s FINISHED Friday is a Link Party for you to show off your lovely finishes each week. And since it’s a party, it’s good to socialize and visit others to see their finishes as well!

To be honest, it had slipped my mind that I was to host TGIFF this week. Yes, it was written on my calendar, but that doesn’t help when I don’t look at it! Anyhow, Anja, one of the managers, sent me a lovely email earlier in the week reminding me … SEW ….

The colour for March in the Rainbow Scrap Challenge is Red. I had a disappearing 9 patch quilt in mind using some red fabric that I got from a Trend-Tex tour when Quilt Canada was in Vancouver … several years ago! And I had a hunk of white fabric hanging around …

It didn’t take long to cut enough 5″ red and white squares for 7 nine patches. It was quick work to sew them up together and then slice them up. When I put them on the design wall, I realized that I needed to make 2 outside rows of 2 1/2” red squares, separated by 2 1/2” x 5″ white rectangles to make the quilt symmetrical. Thankfully, I had enough of the red fabrics left over to make enough of the red squares. But, I had left one set of blocks on the cutting table, so I added them to the mix in order to make the quilt a better size for a baby quilt.

Then the quilt was webbed together and the borders on … This took most of one day to get the flimsy finished.

The next day, I sandwiched the quilt and quilted it with straight line quilting. The binding was added and Ta Da! the quilt was done! It even got a label for a donation to the baby quilt committee!

And a close up of the quilting:

Lunar Glow Blog Hop

Lunar Glow is a Signature collection by Jerry Khiev of Lumin Fabrics for Claudia of Create with Claudia. It’s an absolutely gorgeous collection!

Claudia sent me enough fabric to make 2 medium sized Clam-Up bags. However, I discovered that with some strategic cutting, I was able to cut out 4 bags: X-small, small, medium and large. The fabrics on the left and centre were intended for the outside of the bags, while the fabric on the left was for the lining.

These are the 3 fabrics I chose:

Aurifil #2600 (Dove grey) was used for the uneven straight line quilting and #2815 (Teal) was used for the construction.

Here’s a list of all the blog hoppers:
