One of the Boundary Bay Charity groups is “Hospice” quilts. In September, 2023, they started making quilts for the Irene Thomas Hospice in Ladner. The quilts are first donated to the Heron Hospice Society. In June, members from the society attend the guild meeting and pick up some of the quilts and distribute them.
So, how does the guild organize this charity?
Each month, a different block is chosen. Bags are made up with the required fabric for a block. Members pick up a bag and return the blocks the following month. Then the blocks are assembled and made into flimsies. A member of the guild then quilts the quilts. Apparently, Regina made 100 Butterfly kits in the beginning. Several quilts were made from the kits. Here is one of them.

Here’s an example of several more quilts that have been made.

Of course, there are often orphan blocks left over and Heather has a talent for organizing them into beautiful quilts.

Heather made a wall hanging for the Hospice (her mother had been a patient there). Isn’t it gorgeous?

A HUGE THANK YOU to Regina S., Heather F., and Dawn F. for providing me with photos and information about the guild’s Hospice Quilt Charity!
At the last guild meeting, they asked for volunteers to quilt one of 3 quilts. I absolutely LOVE the quilting portion of making a quilt, so of course, I volunteered! And as always, it was quilted on my domestic sewing machine (Janome M7). The following is the quilt I was given.

Here are some close-ups of the quilting: In the first block, I used 4″ and 6″ Beanie (from Silly Moon) and some free motion. In the 2nd block, I used Drop 3 and echoed it. There was too much empty space between the blocks, so I used the 6″ Beanie to make the curved, off-centre diamonds.

Don’t Forget!

I am now a Silly Moon affiliate! So what does that mean? When you use my affiliate code Quiltinggail2024 at Silly Moon, you will receive 10% off your order and I will receive a small commission.
One who sleeps under a quilt is covered by LOVE!
Happy Quilting!

Very fun donation quilts. Our guild has 4 charities that we donate to. It’s nice, they all take different sizes from baby quilts to bed quilts.

Hi Kate!
It’s always a good feeling to donate quilts! My home is already cluttered with them … I certainly don’t need more!

Your quilting is so beautiful, and I can’t believe you can achieve that on a domestic machine! (I recently gave up even trying and have turned to a long-arm quilter.) You have done a gorgeous job and I know it will be appreciated.
