Sunday Summary: March 16

Yesterday was Worldwide Quilting Day, and for the first time in many years, I did not participate. The weather was very uncooperative … raining very hard … and I didn’t want to get soaked, nor did I want my quilts to get soaked and heavy and risk breaking the line. I will participate next year – providing the weather is half-decent!

Did you see my most recent finish?

My Island Batik March challenge was a LOT of fun to make and running out of fabric made for an excellent chance to alter my plan. You can read about it HERE.

Another Finish. The quilt top was made by various members of the Boundary Bay Quilt Guild. I brought the top home and found backing and batting (Hobbs Batting: 80/20), then quilted it on my domestic sewing machine using Aurifil Thread (#2600, Dove Grey). It is quilted all over with various flower motifs. And bound with a striped fabric from my stash!

The blue floral border print was perfect for the backing!

Kate, from Life in Pieces, is hosting “Stitching Stuff” and the goal is to sew for at least 15 minutes a day. I use Kate’s guideline, but my personal goal is to sew for 30 minutes a day. On those “blah” days, it does motivate me to sit at my machine and 30 minutes often turns into several hours. Thank you Kate for the motivation!

Design Wall Mondays

Judy, at Small Quilts and Doll Quilts, hosts a linky party for “What’s on your Design Wall” every week.

Piecing projects:

  • Yellow – Here’s a picture of my 4 1/2” 10 1/2” rectangles. I need to sash them and sew them into a top
  • Yellow – I’m making some Dresden flowers … no picture yet.

Quilting projects:

  • IB April Project: I’m having fun quilting this one!
  • 2 Blue Charm Star quilts – the borders are from Stash Builder rolls! No yardage cut for either of these quilts … well, except for the solid white background fabric!
  • Blue Blocks: sandwiched …

Donna at Quilt Paint Create hosts a weekly linky party where you can display your stash numbers. This has really kept my stash from growing (somewhat!) Before I buy anything, I am always mindful of the fact that I need to report it on my blog … That sometimes stops me in my tracks!

Nope, I still haven’t bought any fabric yet this year!!! I’m not sure, but this might be a new record for me!

2 finishes to add to my done list! The bear claw used 10 1/2 yards of fabric and the guild quilt used 3 1/2 yards for backing and 1/2 yard of binding from my stash.

  • Fabric used in the last week: 14.5 yards
  • Fabric Used in 2025:     46.5 yards. {7.5 yards of non Island Batik fabric}

I appreciate each of you that leaves comments on my blog!! It’s fun to read about YOU!!

However, I know that many of you have difficulty leaving comments and I honestly do not know what to do about it. I moderate each of the comments (that’s why they don’t show up right away) so that you don’t have to read about the ugly stuff / junk that some try to slip in!

Anyhow, I notice that the vast majority of comments are “anonymous” and I have no idea who you are. If you could simply put your name after the comment, I’d appreciate it! Thank you!

Sunday Summary March 2

Someone asked me how many sewing machines I have! I have several … In my studio are:

  • Janome M7 for quilting
  • Janome 8900 for piecing
  • Janome Pro 4DX (serger)
  • Janome embroidery machine (500E)

In travelling totes:

  • a Janome 4120
  • a Singer featherweight

In the basement:

  • a hand-crank

SAHRR is almost done!

I will not be having a separate SAHRR post on March 3, but I thought I’d show you the results of participants that do not blog or have IG:

  • Carolyn said, ” I made a “checker” strip (1st initial of my name). Ready to quilt.”
  • Katie said, “I combined the last 2 prompts for my next border–quarter log cabins in the corners, and the kites in the center all finishing at 2″, so my top is now 20″ square.  I think I’ll bind it with the darker brown.”
  • Robin
  • Judy said, “Top is finished – ready to sandwich”
  • Jacomina said “I would never have sewn anything like this if it was not for the prompts.  But at least the remnant from the center block is repeated”

Come back on March 24th for the Final Parade!

Yvonne @ Quilting Jetgirl hosts a monthly Favourite Finish. You can read about this Island Batik (Lumin) challenge featuring Studio 180 tool and the Radiant Burst collection HERE.

I did have several finishes in February, but I can’t show you until later in March or April or … Trust me, when I can show you, I will!

A Winner

A random winner was chosen for the fabric draw… C. will receive the fabric later this month! I’m 100% positive that she will enjoy using this beautiful “Radiant Burst” Island Batik fabric! (This is from this POST)

Isn’t this the truth? I have a friend who could never find her seam ripper. So, she bought a pack of 3. Now, she says, “I’m looking for one of my 4 seam rippers!” 😁

SAHRR is in progress!

Tomorrow is Round #6 hosted by Emily at The Darling Dogwood Here’s where you can find each of my rounds, along with links to the co-hosts!

Last week, for the Island Batik “Runner Up” Blog Hop, I posted about my runner. You can read about it HERE. I thoroughly enjoyed making this runner! Using a Studio 180 tool and following directions made for almost perfect points. I say “almost” because I’m not perfect!

And the day before my post went live, I showed the runner at the Boundary Bay Guild meeting. (Photo credit: Irene Hamilton). Our speaker was Julie Plotniko, who spoke about ‘Precision Piecing.’ I am definitely NOT a Precision piecer, but using the Studio 180 tool (Rapid Fire® Lemoyne Star), my runner was pretty close to being precision pieced! (Thanks to the 2 gals on the stage who held the quilts!)

Kate, from Life in Pieces, is hosting “Stitching Stuff” and the goal is to sew for at least 15 minutes a day. I use Kate’s guideline, but my personal goal is to sew for 30 minutes a day. I made it through January without buying any fabric!!! I’m very happy about that! I did finish 2 projects since my last summary. The pink baby quilt (details HERE) and the small zipper pouch (see THIS POST).

I find it interesting that no matter how I put these 2 items into the ‘gallery’ the zipper pouch (6 1/2” x 12″) looks bigger than the quilt (35″ x 35″)!

The pink blocks are cut 2 1/4” x 4 1/2” and the white strip is 1″ x 4 1/2“. This project was inspired by the Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2025. If I have enough pink blocks, it will become a baby quilt. If I don’t have enough, it will be joined by another colour.
  • Sunlit Garden: a small quilt for a blog hop hosted by Jennifer of Curlicue Creations … it will be her newest signature collection and it’s absolutely gorgeous!!! Unfortunately, until the blog hop, you’ll only see black and white!!
  • IB February Project: sorry, no picture, except for the Studio 180 tool and the fabric!
  • IB March Project: as leaders & enders … and no picture!

Quilting projects:

  • Test Quilt: SSB
  • Glorified 9 patch

Donna at Quilt Paint Create hosts a weekly linky party where you can display your stash numbers. This has really kept my stash from growing (somewhat!) Before I buy anything, I am always mindful of the fact that I need to report it on my blog … That sometimes stops me in my tracks!

I did finish my Helen Godden’s Christmas Countdown . You can read about it HERE. This project used over 1/2 yard of fabric … not a lot, I know, but it still counts!

Sunday Summary: January 12

This is true for every day!!!

This is a heritage rose that my dad planted in Victoria in 1965. I dug it up and transplanted it here (near Vancouver, BC) after my mother passed away. To my surprise it has thrived! The one branch with a few buds was not cut down in the fall … and now it’s blooming! And, it smells heavenly!

SAHRR is starting soon!

You can read all about it on THIS POST. The Centre Blocks will be shown tomorrow!

Sunday Summary: December 8

Good thing that quilt shops don’t give out tickets!!! I would have a plethora of them!

December’s colour is Gold. Visit Jen at Patterns by Jen to get your free pattern for this month. It’s free for the month and after that you’ll need to pay a small fee for it.

I’m using Island Batik fabrics for my blocks.

Here are all my blocks:

Remember when I was on holidays and sewing on my hand-crank in the 5th wheel?

I was working on the border and sashing in the above video. I actually pieced the whole top while we were dry camping!

The quilt was quilted using a HUGE variety of Silly Moon rulers (Drop 3, Twinkle, Jelly, Rocket, Cupid, Beanie and Turkey was used in the sashing/border). I went to my bin of left-over binding and pulled out a variety of colours that were used in the quilt … it was fun to use them (and I still have lots left-over!)

Thank you, Jen for the great inspiration and fun BOM!!!

Quilt Stats:

  • Size: 47″ x 62″
  • Fabric: Island Batik: Assortment, with solid light grey and solid black for the sashing & border.
  • Hobbs Batting Heirloom: 80/20
  • Aurifil Thread: Piecing and Quilting: #2600 (Dove Grey)
  • Quilting: All ruler quilted on my domestic sewing machine: Janome M7. Rulers used were Silly Moon’s 6″ Beanie, Rocket, Cupid, Drop, Jelly & Turkey.

Kate, from Life in Pieces, is hosting “Stitching Stuff” and the goal is to sew for at least 15 minutes a day. I use Kate’s guideline, but my personal goal is to sew for 30 minutes a day. In the past week, I have posted about the following finishes. I estimate that the round table topper used about 1 yard of fabric total (check it out HERE). I’m not going to count the fabric in the clam-up bags since Jennifer sent it to me recently for the purpose of making the bags (see THIS POST). The block of the month (above) used over 9 yards … so a total of 10 yards this week.

Sunday Summary November 24

We were away on a Mexican cruise and I didn’t take my machine (shocking, I know!!) I thoroughly enjoyed our time!

We did a ‘glass bottom’ boat tour … had to laugh at the name of the boat “Sex Machine Too!” And the glass bottom was a bit of a joke … a 1′ x 3′ piece of algae covered plexiglass in the middle. But the rest of the tour was great!

This was my finish for “Gnome for Thanksgiving.” You can read about it HERE.

Sunday Summary: October 6

I know it’s just the last day of the weekend, but I think this is true each and every day!!

I had a finish this week: It’s Jam Session. A pattern by Brenda at Songbird Designs. You can read about it HERE:

October’s colour is Black and Grey. Visit Jen at Patterns by Jen to get your free pattern for this month. It’s free for the month and after that you’ll need to pay a small fee for it.

I’m using Island Batik fabrics for my blocks. I am obviously rebelling and using pink! My sashing and border are black and grey, so I wanted this block to be different.

Here’s all my blocks to date:

Leanne, from Devoted Quilter, is doing a WIPS-B-Gone again this year. I did it last year, and every day I worked on a project AND I cleaned my studio!!! It was great!! By the end of 2 months, I had a LOT of things accomplished and breathing room in my studio!

Obviously, I choose the flowers … Each petal indicates at least 15 minutes. Green is for piecing, Orange is for Quilting and Purple is for cleaning.

Here is the link, if you want to join in the fun. Get your projects finished, clean your studio or whatever you choose to do!

Here’s a picture of my clean cutting table: Yes, I know that I need to tidy up the bulletin board above the cutting table.

Denise at A Quiltery is doing “Floral Fusion” – a Sew Along with new blocks each Monday. This promises to be beautiful!!! Hurry and get this week’s block while it’s still free! (See HERE).

Here is a picture of my flower blocks all assembled. I’m using a variety of Island Batik scraps. I know that I’m biased, but I think it’s absolutely beautiful!!! Thank you, Denise.

Since we’re home now, I’ve been able to sew every day!

Sunday Summary: September 29

Ain’t this the truth!

I was away for most of this month. First I had a quilt retreat at Loon Lake. Retreats are always lots of fun! Then we made a quick trip to the interior to try out our new (to us) 5th wheel. It was good that we were just doing a trial run. The water pump in the 5th wheel broke and needed replacing, so we were home for several days while handy hubby fixed it.

Our next trip took us to the east. We were dry camping. (That means no electricity!). This can be a hardship for a die-hard, must sew EVERY day quilter!! But, I took along my hand crank! Here I am, at the Kettle Valley Provincial Park, working on the sashing strips for the monthly colour challenge.

Here are some pictures of my set up and view. Although I didn’t get a picture of one, I was able to occasionally watch deer!

Denise at A Quiltery is doing “Floral Fusion” – a Sew Along with new blocks each Monday. This promises to be beautiful!!! Hurry and get this week’s block while it’s still free! (See HERE).

While we were glamping, I was able to cut out some appliqué flowers and glue them onto background squares. Then, there is a picture of my flower blocks to date. I’m using a variety of Island Batik scraps.

I got lots of sewing done while I was at a retreat, but not a lot while we were dry camping. However, I did count the time I spent cutting out appliqué pieces as sewing time.

The pink and purple flowers on the left are all appliquéd on. I used batting as the stabilizer and will trim around all the stitching to give them a trapunto look. The 2 columns on the right have been glued into place and need stitching.

Sunday Summary: Aug 25

In a previous post, I mentioned I had taken 2 fabrics, sandwiched them and needed to quilt them. The one side is a bunch of flannel squares that were yardage. I can’t remember for sure, but I think that I originally bought it to make a housecoat. That never happened – probably because there wasn’t enough fabric to make it! Anyhow, I matched it with a solid navy that was in my stash and this is the result:

You can’t see much from the flannel side, but here’s some pictures of the graffiti quilting I did on the back! I had a lot of fun quilting this! Feathers, hearts, flowers, loop-d-loop, spirals and whatever else I could think of … Like I said, it was fun!

This will be a donation quilt … I just need to sew the label on it and it’ll be ready to go!

Kate, from Life in Pieces, is hosting “Stitching Stuff” and the goal is to sew for at least 15 minutes a day. I use Kate’s guideline, but my personal goal is to sew for 30 minutes a day. Is this you? It certainly describes me!

A Give Away!

As a Missouri Star Quilt Company Affiliate, I was given the opportunity to receive some Christmas Templates.

And the BEST part: Is that YOU have an opportunity to win a set as well. You have to follow both Missouri Star and myself on Instagram (@quiltinggail and @missouriquiltco). Find my IG post that talks about the templates and leave a comment. I will choose a winner on August 25!

A Finish!

This has been waiting to be finished for quite a while! This quilt was made with the left-overs from the Lone Star Quilt I made with Island Batik‘s Pin Dot Floral (a signature collection for Megan Best). You can read about that quilt on THIS POST! I didn’t want to do a straight piece in the back, so I used a bunch of the left-overs and made the strip piece in the middle. The quilt was quick and easy to quilt – just a simple stipple.

A Squirrel hit me!

Something new to tempt me!! And it promises to be oh, so pretty!

Denise at A Quiltery is starting “Floral Fusion” a Sew Along with new blocks each Monday. Hurry and get this week’s block while it’s still free! (See HERE).

Here’s my first block … isn’t it pretty? It was pretty quick to cut out and fuse onto the background fabrics!
