Sunday Summary: October 6

Oh dear!!! I sincerely hope this is not me!!! (but it could be …)

I did finally finish this quilt. You can read about it HERE.

I have started the Christmas train that Simina from Essem convinced me that I needed to make. It’s webbed together, but there’s still a ways to go!

There is a bit of progress on the quilt … Week 1 – 4 are done. Weeks 5 & 6 are still not started. Soon! You can access the Mystery HERE

Kate, from Life in Pieces, is hosting “Stitching Stuff” and the goal is to sew for at least 15 minutes a day. I use Kate’s guideline, but my personal goal is to sew for 30 minutes a day. On those “blah” days, it does motivate me to sit at my machine and 30 minutes often turns into several hours. Thank you Kate for the motivation!

Not ANOTHER Squirrel???

Yes, another squirrel!!! I was in Essem the other day and Simina convinced me that maybe, perhaps, a Christmas Train quilt would appeal … remember my Train Quilt?

Well I came home with all the fabric to make a top for a Christmas Train … a wall hanging size. I’m using a Christmas Sweet Water charm pack from Moda.

There is little progress on the quilt … Week 2 is started and Week 3 &4 will be started soon. You can access the Mystery HERE

Sunday Summary: September 14

Again, this is actually the week’s forcast!

A few weeks ago, I told you that a squirrel wormed its way into my life. I chose the fabrics and cut out the pieces for the first block. While we were away, we were dry camping for a bit. But, we had to have the generator going so that we could have lights at night and operate the slide when it was time to go. SEW … I plugged in my sewing machine and sewed!! What else is a gal to do when the opportunity arrises? I managed to get the first block sewn … This is from Laundry Basket Quilts Mystery Quilt, Week 1. You can access it their blog HERE

Kate, from Life in Pieces, is hosting “Stitching Stuff” and the goal is to sew for at least 15 minutes a day. I use Kate’s guideline, but my personal goal is to sew for 30 minutes a day. Sunday Summary: August 31

This is actually the week’s forcast!

That’s right a squirrel invaded my sewing space. I did NOT need a squirrel to come worming its way into my life! But it promises to be a beautiful squirrel. You probably all know that I LOVE 🩷 LOVE mystery quilts. Laundry Basket Quilts is hosting a Mystery Quilt. You can access Week 1 on their blog HERE. Lately, I’m on a mission to use up my regular stash … not my Island Batik stash. I find that my regular stash is more difficult to work with, it doesn’t retain the shape easily and frays. BUT … I have it and I need to use it up … so I chose one of my older Fat Quarter Bundles … It was bundled with twine and no tag … but a couple of the fat quarters have a selvage that says “Judie Rothermel Presents Textiles inspired by the Old Sturbridge Village Collection for Marcus Brothers Textiles, Inc. I know that I bought it at a quilt store in Stanwood WA that no longer exists …

A Finished Quilt

I finished this quilt this week. It’s “Bloomers,” designed by Denise Looney. You can read more about it HERE.

Kate, from Life in Pieces, is hosting “Stitching Stuff” and the goal is to sew for at least 15 minutes a day. I use Kate’s guideline, but my personal goal is to sew for 30 minutes a day. A Beautiful Blooming Friday!

This beautiful quilt was designed by Denise of A Quiltery. It’s a sew along with free blocks every 2 weeks. Or, you can get the embroidery designs and make it in your embroidery machine. That is what I did! I used fabric from the “Radiant Burst” collection by Jerry Khiev, along with the Egg White neutral and solid white. The binding is scrappy fabrics from the collection.

It was free motion quilted on my domestic machine (Janome M7). I stippled around the flowers, used Silly Moon’s Rocket to do paradox lines in the hexies and half hexies. On the border, I free motioned flowers with different petals.

Quilt Stats:

Thank you very much, Denise for the wonderful pattern!!! I’m in LOVE ♥️ with it!

Sunday Summary: August 24

Purple was July’s colour for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge hosted by So Scrappy. See THIS POST for more details.

I have attempted to make at least one baby or comfort quilt for each month’s challenge … but unfortunately, I haven’t been totally successful. Here are the ones I’ve made so far: January: pink, February: Blue (3), March: yellow, June: Orange, July: purple (2) I did miss April: red and May: green. Does it count that some of the months I made 2 or 3 quilts? All of these quilts were made with Island Batik (Lumin Fabrics), Hobbs Batting, and pieced and quilted with Aurifil Thread.

Kate, from Life in Pieces, is hosting “Stitching Stuff” and the goal is to sew for at least 15 minutes a day. I use Kate’s guideline, but my personal goal is to sew for 30 minutes a day. A Purple Friday Finish

Purple was the Rainbow Scrap Challenge for July. This is hosted by So Scrappy. I do know it’s August, and Teal is the colour for this month. But sometimes, things don’t get done right when I want them to and they need to wait to be finished! This is the Butterfly quilt from the book Picture Patchwork book by JoAnn Lepore. This is the 4th quilt I have made from this book. Hmmm … I think I highly recommend that you buy it!

And here’s a close up of the quilting. I used Rocket for the straight lines, and free motioned the curves on the dark purple and swirls on the lighter purples.

Sunday Summary: August 10

This was my August September Island Batik project. We were instructed to decorate an Oliso carrying case! See THIS POST for more details.

Sunday Summary: July 27

This is ALMOST all true!! However, I don’t think I’ve EVER tidied the sewing studio to avoid starting a new project!! I might tidy before starting a new project so that I can a) find space on my ironing board or b) find space on my cutting table or c) find space to actually work on the project!

These placemats were completed for a “Christmas in July” blog hop. See HERE for more details.

A Friday Finish in July!

I finished this quilt awhile ago, but I waited until the Rainbow Scrap Challenge featured purple for the month!!! I used the Accuquilt die, “Glorified 9 Patch.” This quilt was originally started as a demo on how to use the Accuquilt. The store offered the class and my intent was to use the pieces to demonstrate how easy it is to sew curved seams. However, apparently it was bad timing and the class was cancelled. I ended up sewing the quilt together. It definitely did not take long. The quilting was easy, I just followed the curves at approximately 1/2” intervals.

Monday Moments: July 7

Well, I don’t drink alcohol very often, but I do love to have virgin cocktails … Love the fruity taste!

I finished quilting the Swan. This pattern was from the book “Picture Patchwork” by JoAnn Lepore. Earlier in the spring, I wrote a review of this book HERE. This quilt called for 3″ squares, but since I wanted a smaller quilt, I raided my blue and neutral Island Batik scraps and cut 2 1/2” squares.

And here’s a close up of the quilting. Feathers in the white part of the swan and small curves outlining all of the other blocks in the quilt. It’s all free motion on my domestic sewing machine.

And, I have one more pattern from this book in progress – using Purple!

From Island Batik Scraps

Surprise! This post does not contain any quilting! It does talk about batik fabric. And it’s still worth a read!

A good friend of mine is a very talented artist! She has an Exhibition “Gifts from the Garden” happening in Clearwater, BC. If you’re anywhere near Clearwater, it would be well worth the visit! (It’s on until the end of July!)

In the meantime, I’m VERY excited to show you her creation! A few years ago, Robin asked me to save all my scraps of Island Batik fabrics for her. The way I quilt, I don’t have much use for scraps smaller than a 2″ square. Everything that’s left over goes into my “Robin’s scrap bag.”

Oh, and yes, not only is she a fabulous painter, she’s also a great photographer! (Not to mention other talents, including mosaics … she has self-published a book of poems with illustrations that her mother did … visit her website to see more of her talent: HERE.)

These photos from her garden were her inspiration!

She painted white and black onto her board and used tweezers and glue to make the background (green) mosaic.

And here is the final piece!!! Isn’t it fantastic?

I love that I can pick out fabrics from various Island Batik collections that I have used over the years.

Well, this is ALMOST true!! I have no interest in having mice in my sewing space, nor a fox or a goat … but the rest is true!

You can read more about this quilt HERE. It was a fun mystery quilt to make. Thank you Joanne (from Canuck Quilter Designs) for the fabulous directions and great mystery!

Design Wall Mondays

Judy, at Small Quilts and Doll Quilts, hosts a linky party for “What’s on your Design Wall” every week.

Piecing projects:

  • I’m using a 2 1/2” stack of Island Batik’s “Splish Splash.” It’s a recently release collection. I love the seahorses, fish, bubbles … well, I just love the whole line of these fabrics. I’m using a pattern from The Fat Quarter Shop called “Jelly Roll Twist” and you can get the free pattern HERE.
  • Disappearing 9 patch using “ORANGE” and Island Batik’s solid grey for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge.
  • I need to pull fabrics for “Bloomers

Quilting projects:

  • Swan. is sandwiched, needs quilting and binding

Donna at Quilt Paint Create hosts a weekly linky party where you can display your stash numbers. This has really kept my stash from growing (somewhat!) Before I buy anything, I am always mindful of the fact that I need to report it on my blog … That sometimes stops me in my tracks!

Canuck Quilter’s Mystery Quilt

This quilt is FINALLY done!!!

Joanne Kerton from Canuck Quilter Designs offered a mystery quilt this spring. I’m a sucker for mystery quilts and couldn’t resist doing it! She called it a “Colour Value Mystery” and offered 2 options: Modern or Traditional. I opted for the Traditional. I’ve done a few of Canuck Quilter’s Designs and they are always well written!

Here’s a few of the progress pictures: Fabric cut out, blocks ready to assemble and on the design wall prior to sandwiching.

And the Finished Quiilt:

Close up of the Quilting: A little free motion, but mostly ruler quilting.

Thanks Joanne for the fantastic mystery sew-along!

Sunday Summary: June 22

Totally!! I struggle to do any housekeeping!

A Fun Photo

Last year, my sister and 2 cousins and I went to Lori’s Country Cottage for their longest day of the year sale. It was a lot of fun. We went for the 10 pm part of the sale, where everything was 40% off! Yup it was fun! One of the employees climbed up on a cutting table and took this picture. They posted it on their Facebook page to advertise this year’s sale. (I’m the one in the white at the front of the picture and my sister is towards the back of the line … my cousins had already left as they were finished shopping). Unfortunately, I wasn’t in Edmonton to go this year, but my sister went to on Friday night and got lots of goodies!

I often join in MMM Quilts sew alongs each spring. She always has interesting patterns and ways of doing something. This year did not disappoint! See THIS POST for details on my Glowing Hearts Quilt.

This used 13 fat quarters from “Bluebird” by Editya Sitar. There is Hobbs Batting 80/20 inside, Aurifil Thread #2600 (Dove Grey) and Schmetz Needles were used. The project was pressed with my Oliso Iron m3Pro. I used Silly Moon‘s “Cupid” for the quilting on my domestic machine!
