Announcing the 2026 SAHRR

Earlier this year, we had a parade for the 2025 SAHRR (pronounced Stay At Home Round Robin) and said that we would be doing it again in 2026. Here’s the LINK where you can see all the quilts made last year.

This year’s logo was designed by Brenda of Songbird Designs … isn’t it fantastic?

For the past 6 years, I have done a SAHRR and have made different quilts. The first year I did it on my own and then for the next 5 years, I had some fantastic blogging/quilting friends join in the fun!

Here’s my quilts from previous SAHRRs. The last 2 are ones I did on my own. It’s so much MORE fun with others! Here’s the LINK where you can see all the quilts made last year.

SAHRR '25

As you can tell, except for the 2 I did on my own, the rounds are all different. This year promises to be different as well!

All of my SAHRR quilts are made with Island Batik fabrics, Hobbs batting and Aurifil thread.

What is a Round Robin?

This is a common activity in many quilt guilds. A round robin (in quilting terms) is where each person makes a centre block. This block is put in a bag or container, maybe with extra fabric, perhaps with a notebook, and the bag is passed onto another quilter in the group. They are given instructions as to what kind of border (or round) they are to add on to the quilt. Sometimes the next person will make a border for each side, or one side or two sides of the block. It’s then passed on to another quilter and it continues on … when the quilt centre and all the borders are completed, it is returned to the original maker of the centre block.

So, I stay at home?

That’s correct! You and your centre block and the borders all stay home. You have to make the decisions as to what to add when given directions. How big, how many … it’s up to you. We will let you know what each of us does and there may be short tutorials on some of our blogs.

How do I join?

There’s nothing to join, no sign up. All you need to do is follow our blogs (see the links below)

How often does this happen?

Once a week.

On Wednesday, January 14, we will show you our centre blocks.

The SAHRR Team met in the summer and I haven’t seen any of the centre blocks … so it’s going to be a surprise for me as well!

Then on January 21 (and each Wednesday following) we will give you instructions as to what the next border/round is to be. Again, we will all show you our centre blocks with the first border to give you some ideas.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I don’t want to make that round? It’s your quilt – you can leave it out.

What size do I make it? That’s up to you … you are sort-of the designer here.

Are the rounds hard? No … each round is pretty simple … squares, rectangles, half-square triangles with perhaps a surprise.

What colours do I use? That’s up to you … you can follow what one of the SAHRR leader uses or have your own colour scheme. You can use scraps or fabric from a specific fabric collection.

What if I miss a round? You can leave it out, or go back to the blog where the directions are given.

Will you cut my fabric for me? No!

How often will the quilt police check on me and my progress? There are NO quilt police!! None!!

What do I do now?

Make sure that you follow each of the SAHRR leaders so that you don’t miss their posts.

Start thinking about what you might do for a centre block. Do you have an orphan block you’d like to use? Or do you want to try a new block … now is the time!

Relax … this is easy … and it’s only one round each week!

It’s All Up to You!

The final challenge of the year allowed the ambassadors to do whatever we wanted! Sometimes, this can be very difficult and at other times it’s super easy! This time, it was easy!

I knew that I wanted to do something scrappy.

This fall, I was very inspired by the fall colours of the trees and the leaves. They seemed more vibrant than other years. The following pictures were taken by my friend, Stella MacDonald. (And, she’s hoping that me posting them will make her famous!!). Aren’t the colours rich?

I used the Accuquilt die “Maple Leaf” to cut everything out. (See HERE). This die has the blocks finishing at 8″. I used the free Accuquilt Table Runner pattern as a guide, but I doubled the size and made it scrappier!

Here is the finished quilt:

The “Oh Canada” quilting ruler (from Silly Moon) was ideal for doing an “all-over” pattern on the quilt! Aurifil Thread #4650 was the perfect variegated thread to use on this quilt. It has lots of greens, red, and yellow! I actually laughed out loud when I read that the name of the thread was “Leaves!” Hobbs 80/20 batting is in the middle.

The Janome M7 has a maple leaf stitch and I used it on the binding!

Stitching Stuff

Kate, from Life in Pieces, is hosting “Stitching Stuff” and the goal is to sew for at least 15 minutes a day. I use Kate’s guideline, but my personal goal is to sew for 30 minutes a day. I tested the Arabesque pattern

I know you’re wondering what the Arabesque pattern is!

Sandra Walker of mmmquilts asked me to test the pattern. If you haven’t figured it out yet, I love to test patterns. Sandra said that this quilt was her SAHRR (Stay at Home Round Robin) from this year. However, it looks totally different than mine! (You can see it HERE). It’s really hard to believe that it was the same round robin!

Now, Sandra’s finished quilt is quite dramatic and beautiful. Don’t you agree?

When Sandra asked, she suggested that the first 5 rounds would make a nice baby quilt, so that’s what I did!

I went to my stash and picked out the fabrics for the centre block and cut each round as I needed. This allowed me to use my stash and move fabrics around as I saw fit (or had sufficient fabric for). I have the first 5 rounds of the quilt done and am in the process of deciding on the backing. The binding will be the purple that I used for the centre square.

With the colours I chose, my quilt is not as dramatic as Sandra’s, but I think it’s quite pretty and will make a lovely baby quilt!

Carol, from Quilt Schmilt, also tested the pattern. She plans to make all the rounds, but first has to have a date with Jack the Ripper before she finishes it. Isn’t she brave to post a quilt that has a mistake in it? Visit Quilt Schmilt to see her version!

You can go to Sandra’s Etsy shop and purchase it HERE. It will be on sale for $10 until Monday, December 8.

Usually, in the spring, Sandra offers a free sew-a-long!! I have done several and LOVE each one!! So yes, I’m back. Breaking 2 ribs was quite the shock! I wallowed in self-pity for awhile, but one kind soul said, “It’s better than the alternative.” So very true! And …. I must thank each one of you for your kind wishes!

I have been able to go for walks and quilt. Both are very beneficial for my mental health! I still have pain and need to be careful with reaching and lifting. And laughing still hurts a LOT! However, I can cut fabric (in small doses) and can sew! I have another x-ray next week and hopefully, I will be able to do more!!

Now, back to our regular blog chatter:

Laundry Basket Mystery Quilt Progress

There is a bit of progress on the quilt … Week 1 – 6 are done. I had been procrastinating Week 6. I didn’t like the thought of doing flying geese stars without doing the no-waste method. So, I thought I could do a friendship star instead. It worked perfectly. You can access the Mystery HERE.

A bit about me …

Last week, while walking my grand-dog, I fell, HARD. It took several days before I could get into see the doctor. After an examination and x-rays, it was determined that I have 2 cracked / broken ribs on my right side. Consequently, I was informed that I was to rest and not do anything for the next 4-6 weeks.

Well, how boring is that?

However, I have discovered that I am able to sew without pain for short periods of time. The hardest part is standing up after sitting. Pressing with my mini Oliso (M3Pro) is still within my ability for small pieces, for a very short period of time.

Yup, I know, I’m not following my doctor’s orders very well. But, don’t they say that nurses make the worst patients?

All of this to say, I’m going to step back from blogging and sewing like a mad woman! My November project for the Island Batik Timeless Treasures Blog Hop will go live on the 11th. You can see the Blog Hop schedule HERE. I hope to continue posting my fellow ambassador’s projects on Facebook and Instagram.

I will be slowly working on my December Island Batik project … and most of my other projects will be put on hold.

Hopefully, I will be back in the saddle and quilting to my heart’s content in 4-6 weeks.

One of my Patterns

In early September, Teresa emailed me asking if I had the pattern for “Ivan’s Diamonds.” In a very short period of time, Teresa had paid for the pattern and quickly made it. She sent me pictures of her quilt … Isn’t it gorgeous? And the quilting is perfect!! Thank you Teresa for allowing me to share your pictures!

So far, I’m doing good!! My picture shows an orange petal each day that I clean for 15 minutes and the rest of the time is spent sewing … (the petals do not represent the exact time … but when I clean, I set my timer for 15 minutes and I stop when it goes off! Sew Stylish Challenge with ByAnnie

ByAnnie generously provided me with my chosen pattern and all the necessary hardware to make Switchback. The only criteria for choosing a bag was to make sure it had an Add-On Video!

Here’s a picture of everything I received from ByAnnie!

Before I began, I pressed all the fabrics with my wonderful Oliso m3pro iron!!! I LOVE this iron for quilting and used it during the making of Switchback when I needed to press a seam.

ByAnnie patterns come with a label sheet so you can label all of your cut pieces. This makes gathering the specific components easy. It is VERY important to do this. It saves lots of re-measuring and prevents future headaches. The picture below is of all my cut & labelled pieces. I pin these onto my design wall for easy access.

For the quilting, I did a wavy stitch with my walking foot. I used the same thread in the bobbin as in the top, that’s why you can see the quilting on the lining. The 2nd picture shows most of the quilted and cut pieces. Yes, I used a Schmetz needle! The 4th picture is close to the end … lots of clips to hold pieces in place! Unfortunately, I neglected to take other pictures as I went along.

Here are some pictures of the inside of the bag: Lots of pockets and extra hardware for keys or a carabiner. The 3rd pictures shows the extra hardware being used for extra security for the bag.

The Switchback can be worn as a backpack, an over-the-shoulder bag or as a cross-body bag.

Here is a picture of the finished bag! I’m loving it!

Not ANOTHER Squirrel???

Yes, another squirrel!!! I was in Essem the other day and Simina convinced me that maybe, perhaps, a Christmas Train quilt would appeal … remember my Train Quilt?

Well I came home with all the fabric to make a top for a Christmas Train … a wall hanging size. I’m using a Christmas Sweet Water charm pack from Moda.

My Squirrel progress

A few weeks ago, I told you that a squirrel wormed its way into my life. I chose the fabrics and cut out the pieces for the first block. While we were away, we were dry camping for a bit. But, we had to have the generator going so that we could have lights at night and operate the slide when it was time to go. SEW … I plugged in my sewing machine and sewed!! This is actually the week’s forcast!

Oh NO!!! A Squirrel …

That’s right a squirrel invaded my sewing space. I did NOT need a squirrel to come worming its way into my life! But it promises to be a beautiful squirrel. You probably all know that I LOVE 🩷 LOVE mystery quilts. Laundry Basket Quilts is hosting a Mystery Quilt. You can access Week 1 on their blog HERE. Lately, I’m on a mission to use up my regular stash … not my Island Batik stash. I find that my regular stash is more difficult to work with, it doesn’t retain the shape easily and frays. BUT … I have it and I need to use it up … so I chose one of my older Fat Quarter Bundles … It was bundled with twine and no tag … but a couple of the fat quarters have a selvage that says “Judie Rothermel Presents Textiles inspired by the Old Sturbridge Village Collection for Marcus Brothers Textiles, Inc. I know that I bought it at a quilt store in Stanwood WA that no longer exists …

A Beautiful Blooming Friday!

This beautiful quilt was designed by Denise of A Quiltery. It’s a sew along with free blocks every 2 weeks. Or, you can get the embroidery designs and make it in your embroidery machine. That is what I did! I used fabric from the “Radiant Burst” collection by Jerry Khiev, along with the Egg White neutral and solid white. The binding is scrappy fabrics from the collection.

It was free motion quilted on my domestic machine (Janome M7). I stippled around the flowers, used Silly Moon’s Rocket to do paradox lines in the hexies and half hexies. On the border, I free motioned flowers with different petals.

A Purple Finish

Purple was July’s colour for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge hosted by So Scrappy. See THIS POST for more details.

I have attempted to make at least one baby or comfort quilt for each month’s challenge … but unfortunately, I haven’t been totally successful. Here are the ones I’ve made so far: January: pink, February: Blue (3), March: yellow, June: Orange, July: purple (2) I did miss April: red and May: green. Does it count that some of the months I made 2 or 3 quilts? All of these quilts were made with Island Batik (Lumin Fabrics), Hobbs Batting, and pieced and quilted with Aurifil Thread.

Kate, from Life in Pieces, is hosting “Stitching Stuff” and the goal is to sew for at least 15 minutes a day. I use Kate’s guideline, but my personal goal is to sew for 30 minutes a day. On those “blah” days, it does motivate me to sit at my machine and 30 minutes often turns into several hours. Thank you Kate for the motivation!

A Purple Friday Finish

Purple was the Rainbow Scrap Challenge for July. This is hosted by So Scrappy. I do know it’s August, and Teal is the colour for this month. But sometimes, things don’t get done right when I want them to and they need to wait to be finished! This is the Butterfly quilt from the book Picture Patchwork book by JoAnn Lepore. This is the 4th quilt I have made from this book. Hmmm … I think I highly recommend that you buy it!

And here’s a close up of the quilting. I used Rocket for the straight lines, and free motioned the curves on the dark purple and swirls on the lighter purples.

I bought them at the Wild Rose Quilt store in Orting, WA, many, many, many years ago! Some of it is from a collection called “Buttons and Blooms” and some are from the back wall where the reproduction fabrics were.
