SAHRR Round #1

For the SAHRR ’24, I am using Island Batik fabrics: a 10″ stack of Limerick in addition to “Teal” and “Egg Shell.”

Round #1 is hosted by Wendy at @ Pieceful Thoughts of My Quilting Life. She chose the signature block. Typically, the signature block has a white centre, but because we can do what we want, I chose to have the colour in the centre and the neutral where the colour typically goes. I cut the blocks with Accuquilt dies. They will finish at 4″. 

If you don’t have an Accuquilt die to make this block, you can cut a 4.5″ square and add 2.5″ squares to 2 of the corners, with the sew and flip method. HERE is a tutorial with a different sized block than mine. It’s totally up to you which size of block you make, where you put the colours etc.

I debated as to whether I should have them going in different directions, or all in one direction. I ultimately decided to have them all go in the same direction. Once I had it pieced together, I made another decision … and out came my seam ripper!

Since I want this to be a decent sized lap quilt, I decided that I needed to add a neutral border around each block / round. I cut my borders at 2 1/2” and added them on. This meant that I also needed to make a few more signature blocks. I hadn’t tidied up after making the first signature blocks, so the dies were right there, ready to make more blocks! 😁

Here is the 1st Round. It finishes at 24″x 28″.

  2. I love your rich batiks. As I’m looking at everyone’s designs, I’m struck by how we all figure out sizes for the blocks and borders to make them work. Who knew we’d be using our geometry skills this way back when we were in math class. Speaking for myself, this is much better math work than all those math assignments.

    • I totally agree with you, Janine Marie!!! At least with these math skills, we have a satisfying end result. When I was in high school, I honestly didn’t care if a train was going at such and such a speed, and a car was travelling at a different speed, when would the truck at another speed collide with them?? It still boggles my mind.

  4. The first round is on air and it will be a busy week! Your fabrics are lovely. Believe me it was not easy to find the meaning behind the block name churn dash for me, its a tool to make butter…. Your border could be all the busy hands to move it. Hope there are some more new participants this year and have all this fun to do something together but possible to interprete individually. Thats so fantastic! are you doing ok back in the cold winter weather conditions?

      I agree, a churn is for making butter – who knows where the names of some of the blocks come from? I love your interpretation of many hands making butter from my churn dash!! There seems to be a few more people this year! Fun!

    • Yes, they are different and we didn’t even plan it to be that way. That’s what makes the SAHRR so much fun. Everyone has their own interpretation of what the round is going to be! 🙂

I’m going to follow your lead and put the color in the center of the block. Those blue, greens and purples are really pretty. I did those colors last year and they are fun to sew with. Now I need to finish my oatmeal and get going on my chores so I can get to the sewing room to get going on my round. Thank you so much for hosting the SAHRR again.
