Jam Session

A friend of mine, Brenda Alburl, from Songbird Designs, asked if I would test a quilt for her. I LOVE her designs and eagerly said “yes.” Here is the quilt:

I had full intention of making the full sized quilt, but stuff happened. I had a fat quarter bundle of cute fabric that had languished in my stash for many years. It was called Sew Catty and came out in 2011. Time to use it up! I made the first block at a retreat.

When life got a little less chaotic, I started to make more blocks. I was positive I had enough background fabric from my stash for it! But, alas, I realized that I did not have enough for the entire quilt. And, of course, there was nothing in my stash that was close to it. So, I decided that I would just make 12 blocks and call it done.

It was a fun quilt to quilt. I used Silly Moon‘s smallest Cupid ruler for the hearts, swirls in the coloured portions of the blocks and simple meandering in the background, except for the borders where I repeated the swirls. I used left-overs from the blocks to make the scrappy binding.

Once the quilt was finished, including the label, I discovered more of the background fabric!! It had fallen between my table and one of my travelling machines. Oh well, those extra fat quarters are now in the fat quarter container.

Thank you to Brenda for having me test this pattern. The directions are very clear. Visit Songbird Designs if you wish to purchase the pattern!!

NOTE: today, as I’m getting ready to publish this blog post, I realize that 2 of the blocks are in wrong!! Oh well, they are going to stay that way!

  2. You did great with this test quilt for Brenda. Love the fabrics and the hearts in the quilting are perfect. I like your design choice…no wrong blocks in my book.

  3. This is a nice pattern. Never would think that this is a mistake. Yi thought it must be like that. Who is telling what is right or wrong? It makes the quilt interesting… and more „light“.. all in the same direction is very „straight“… mhh, do I find the right wordS? Could look good with all blue scraps and one „wrong“ direction orange …. So, nothing wrong! Just fabulous!! Thanks for sharing!

  4. It’s amazing how easy we can turn a block of two and not even see it until it is all quilted!!

Glad I’m not the only one! ☺️

    It’s beautiful!

  5. What a sweet little quilt! I have to admit I didn’t understand the two blocks facing the other way. Lol! Still an adorable quilt. Makes people wonder, right?

    • Ah, Sue, the 2 blocks were a mistake … it was obvious once the quilt was posted on my blog, but until then, I honestly didn’t see it! People can wonder and hopefully laugh when they see that others make big mistakes! 🙂

  6. What a lovely quilt! I’m so glad you turned 2 of the blocks the ‘wrong’ way – I like the background center design better. I’d probably turn all of the blocks that same way, which means groupings of 4 at a time – so the number of quilt blocks would have to be divisible by 4. Thanks for sharing such a pretty quilt – and I’m so glad I’m not the only one who ‘loses’ fabric in my quilt room…only to have it turn up later when I do some tidying up!

    • LOL!!! I won’t tell you how often I loose fabric, the binding, thread, my seam ripper, my little ruler, my pencil and numerous other items each and every day!!! Jam Session is an easy quilt and you can have fun turning the blocks! Would love to see it when you make it!
