A friend saw a quilt that I had made in 2007 on my Facebook page. She asked if I had the pattern. I couldn’t find the pattern any where. I looked through all my files – both paper and on the computer.
I have made at least 5 quilts using this pattern. This was when I was first getting back into quilting. It is easy to pick 3 co-ordinating fabrics, the blocks are big and go together easily.
The pictures above are 2 others that I did. The one on the left was given to a dear friend when she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The one on the right was gifted to a nephew. (It’s a poor picture because the main fabrics are a very pretty dusty blue – the colour is more true in the picture below.)
Here is a picture of the quilting. I just did an all-over meander on my nephew’s. The green one above and the bright blue ones both have stippling in the background fabric and straight lines on the coloured portions. At the time, I didn’t know about ruler quilting or quilting straight lines with free motion and I remember turning the quilt a zillion times to get the look I wanted. The green one has added borders and was a lot more difficult to turn around!
My son received another one that I made, but alas I don’t have a picture. And yes, I know I should ask him to send me a picture!
There’s another one that is in a box, partially done. It’s on my UFO list and a potential finish for my PHD. You may see it finished before the year is out … but no promises.
Edit: Update: another friend told me that this quilt is also known as a Carpenter’s Star. If you google it, you can find a pattern. (I couldn’t find a good pattern when I googled “Carpenter’s Wheel.” So google, “Carpenter’s Star.”

It always amazes me how changing the fabric, changes the look of a quilt. You’ve got some fun Carpenter Star quilts, but that blue on is my favorite.

Hi Kate … I too am amazed at how different fabric affects the look … that’s why I love looking at quilts done with different colour ways!

So lovely! I especially like your blue & black version. I made a Carpenter’s Wheel block earlier this year and loved it! Sadly, it was for a bee so I didn’t get to keep it. But I’m planning on painting a barn quilt later this year to put on a new storage shed in our yard and I have decided to do Carpenter’s Wheel!

A barn quilt – Carpenter’s Wheel sounds perfect! When you do it – you should do a blog post!

Hi Gail. It’s called Carpenter Star. I googled it and up came a pattern. It’s one that I’ve planned for years to make, but haven’t yet. Maybe next year!

Thanks, Dianne. I think it goes by both names … It’s called wheel in EQ7. Anyhow … I did find a nice pattern when I googled “star” instead of wheel. I’ll send that along to my friend. Thanks!

Gail,
Did you find the pattern or a link to send your friend for the Carpenter Wheel? Both of your finished quilts look beautiful. I know all the turning was a lot on the green quilt, but it sure was worth it for the look you achieved. It looks great, as does the stippling. ~smile~ Roseanne

Hi Roseanne,
Thanks, Roseanne! I did find a link to a quilt with one block carpenter’s wheel, but alas, I know that with the size I made. we trimmed the HST with a 6 1/2″ ruler. And, of course, with the green one, I added onto the border … that was over 10 years ago and that’s all my memory is providing! 🙂
Happy Quilting! 🙂

I made 4 of the Lone Star wallhangings ages ago. I have two in my possession, the one I made for myself and the one my cousin returned to me after my aunt died. My mom and other aunt hold the others. Mom still puts hers out at Christmas.

It is fun to re-make a quilt when it’s one you LOVE! And how precious of your cousin to return the quilt you made for your aunt! Such good memories! Happy quilting! 🙂

What an awesome block! As you say, easy to pick fabrics for, and relatively fast to put together. What a great go to project when you need a gift. Thanks for linking to Wednesday Wait Loss.

Oh my, just thinkng about all that turning makes me tired! Glad you found the short cuts. (If there is a difficult or slow way to do something, especially quilting, I can find it.)
