Newfoundland quilts and stores

Rock Quilts

While driving around, we found a few quilts that were painted on rocks.  I found them fascinating.   We talked with the lady that painted the one on the left.  She told us that she re-paints the rock every spring.  Quite a feat for a wheel-chair bound lady!

Quilt Stores

We went into a few quilt stores while travelling in Newfoundland.  Unfortunately, I didn’t take pictures of all of them.  However I did get a few pictures of each of the stores where I found puffin fabric!

This first one is “Stitches from the Rock.”  It is a small store on the Bonavista peninsula. I think I would have missed it if we weren’t looking specifically for it!

In Gander, there was a delightful store, “The Fabric Shop.”  The ladies were super friendly!  The store certainly had everything a quilter could need or want!  A multitude of quilts on display provided great eye candy!

Fiber Lily near St. Johns, was by far my favourite.  Perhaps because I was secretly hunting for a quilt store that was friendly, inviting and offered classes for the new quilter.  My sister-in-law is interested in starting a beginning class in the fall.  I’m pretty sure that Fiber Lily will meet her needs.

Fibre Lily is where I bought  my husband bought the 2 kits.  The row-by-row from last year is a fantastic picture of St. John’s Narrows with an iceberg … and since we had been chasing around looking for them, it was a “must buy.”  It will make a nice memory!

I have done a bit of quilting since I’ve been home, but no finishes … hopefully next week I’ll be able to report some progress.

In the meantime,

Happy Quilting!
Gail

  3. PUFFIN fabric? Please share your finds in pictures! I can’t say I’ve ever seen fabric with puffins. Other than photographs, I’ve never seen a real puffin, either! As far as Row by Row goes, you know that not every Row pattern has applique. Just how many quilt shops are there in Newfoundland?

    • Hi Alice,

I will post pics of the Puffin fabric in a future post.
As far as Row-by-Row goes, I have seen one row that was not appliqué … and it actually had NO appeal to me!

How many quilt stores in Newfoundland? I have absolutely no idea. The island is quite huge … about a 10 hour drive across … without going down the zillion side roads that go out to the coast. I think there were about 5 in the St. John’s area alone.

      Happy Quilting! 🙂

  4. I love visiting new quilt stores! I did Row by Row one year and had a ton of fun! Looks like you did too. I love that quilt rock though. So cool! Thanks for sharing on Wednesday Wait Loss.

    • Hi Jennifer!
I haven’t done any of the Row-by-Rows … mostly because I dislike appliqué. To the point, I usually call it cr-appliqué. But, I will do this one!
      Happy Quilting! 🙂

    • Hi Emily,
Yes, they are amazing! That’s why we had to stop and take pictures! I’m sure we probably missed some and there are probably more … maybe I’ll catch them next time!
      Happy Quilting! 🙂

    • Hi Wendy,

Yes, and the lady does it every spring … when it’s warm enough!
You made me laugh!! My husband’s 2 quilt kits are in the same condition as when they were bought! I have very little hope of him doing them … but never say never, eh?
      Happy Quilting! 🙂
