Make it Modern with Hobbs

When we were in Hawaii in January, we went to Pearl Harbour.  I was captivated by the history of the bombing and intrigued by the “Tree of Life” relief.   According to “A Day at Pearl Harbor – USS Arizona Memorial”  the design “has come to be known as a symbol of peace and harmony”.

I had already recieved an outline from Island Batik of our upcoming projects.  “Make it Modern” was the title for the month of May.   As I looked at the structure and took the photo, I pondered, “Could I? Should I? Can I?”

And the answers to my questions were: Yes, yes, yes….

I didn’t really know how to start.  But my daughter, who is a structural engineer drafter looked at me as if I had bricks in my head … and she drafted it out for me.  What a sweetie, eh?

So, once I had the paper pieces laid out on my white Island Batik fabric, I started choosing which colours to use.  The stash builder bundles were fantastic – even if I had to piece some of them to make the blocks fit.  I chose the colours to represent grass, greenery, and shades of the sky … all represent “life” to me and the creator who made our world.

Here it is: it’s 45″ x 62″.  I backed it with black, because I thought the back would be neat.  The grey #2600 Aurifil thread was perfect for the front, but a little stark for the back.  I quilted the roots and the swirls for the tree, then outlined the tree.  It was fun to quilt!  I used Hobbs Heirloom Bleached 80/20 for batting.  Even with batik on the front and the back, this quilt will be nice and cuddly! Or perhaps it will hang on a wall!

A shot of the back and of the quilt on the burning bush (which won’t turn red until the fall).

It’s my reminder of Pearl Harbour, peace, harmony, the gift of life and of our great trip to Hawaii!

  2. Wow, Gail! What great inspiration and I love the way it came together. The colors in the tree are fantastic, I love the movement from deep ground to sky. The quilting to show the tree roots is also incredible. Beautifully done!

  4. Incredible! Be sure to send pictures to the Pearl Harbor site. They would love to see how you interpreted the Memorial. They could sell the pattern-I would buy it as a visitor! Love it!

  6. I love the depth of the “holes” in this quilt, the quilting is fabulous! The greenery and blues are a great contrast to the white; a wonderful modern quilt!

  7. It is a beautiful creation for sure…and that’s coming from someone who is not a fan of modern quilts.
Stunning and a great family project. Now, if you could do it again using fabrics your hubby bought….lol

    • It’s a shock for me, Terry! ’cause I don’t do ‘modern’. It was for Island Batik – so used their fabrics … perhaps if I make a pattern, I’ll use some of my hubby’s fabrics! 🙂
      Happy Quilting, Cuz! 🙂

  8. Shut the front door! How the heck cool is this??!!! Way, way, WAY COOL like out of this hemisphere cool. Love, love, love this – and how even more cool that your daughter helped you draft it out. I think you NEED to make this into a pattern. Who doesn’t need a bit of peace and harmony in their life, I ask you. And you should submit it to Make Modern – they would adore the whole backstory. ~smile~ Roseanne
