Ain’t this the truth!
We were Away
I was away for most of this month. First I had a quilt retreat at Loon Lake. Retreats are always lots of fun! Then we made a quick trip to the interior to try out our new (to us) 5th wheel. It was good that we were just doing a trial run. The water pump in the 5th wheel broke and needed replacing, so we were home for several days while handy hubby fixed it.
Our next trip took us to the east. We were dry camping. (That means no electricity!). This can be a hardship for a die-hard, must sew EVERY day quilter!! But, I took along my hand crank! Here I am, at the Kettle Valley Provincial Park, working on the sashing strips for the monthly colour challenge.
Here are some pictures of my set up and view. Although I didn’t get a picture of one, I was able to occasionally watch deer!

Floral Fusion Blocks
Denise at A Quiltery is doing “Floral Fusion” – a Sew Along with new blocks each Monday. This promises to be beautiful!!! Hurry and get this week’s block while it’s still free! (See HERE).

While we were glamping, I was able to cut out some appliqué flowers and glue them onto background squares. Then, there is a picture of my flower blocks to date. I’m using a variety of Island Batik scraps.

Stitching Stuff

Kate, from Life in Pieces, is hosting “Stitching Stuff” and the goal is to sew for at least 15 minutes a day. I use Kate’s guideline, but my personal goal is to sew for 30 minutes a day. On those “blah” days, it does motivate me to sit at my machine and 30 minutes often turns into several hours. Thank you Kate for the motivation!
I got lots of sewing done while I was at a retreat, but not a lot while we were dry camping. However, I did count the time I spent cutting out appliqué pieces as sewing time.

Sunday Stash

Donna at Quilt Paint Create hosts a weekly linky party where you can display your stash numbers. This has really kept my stash from growing (somewhat!) Before I buy anything, I am always mindful of the fact that I need to report it on my blog … That sometimes stops me in my tracks!
I figure that the tissue holders used up about 1.5 yards of fabric. Yes, I used bits and pieces, but they all came from my Island Batik stash.

- Fabric Used in the last week: 1.5 yards
- Fabric Used in 2024: 153 yards from non-IB: 63.5
- Fabric Added in the last week: 0 yards
- Fabric Added this year: 29.5 yards

Love that meme Gail! It is definitely true! Your Floral Fusion blocks are looking great. I’m glad you had a hand crank machine to take with you. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one – lots of treadle machines, but I don’t recall a hand crank! Thanks for sharing with us at Monday Musings!

I’ve had my hand crank for several years, but have rarely used it. It is slow going, but it does get some sewing done!! I’m LOVING Floral Fusion!!! I think it’s so pretty (and yes, I know I’m biased!). LOL!!!

hi Gail. I’m in love with your sweet hand crank machine. Talk about perfect when you get to go dry camping! I’m sure we were in the Okanagan at the same time since I was there twice this month 😉. Thank you for joining To Do Tuesday. I’m sure looking forward to your reveals in the upcoming hops 😉 Carol

Thanks, Carol! We spent most of the time at the Kettle Valley campground (Rock Creek) and Christina Lake. I thought about convincing my hubby to drive to your place, but I didn’t have internet … perhaps one day, we’ll meet in person!

Too funny! The Needles ferry was closed (staffing issues 😉) so I came home through Rick Creek/Christina Lake. I don’t think you’d have wanted me to stop by at 2:30 in the am though 🤣

You’re right, I wouldn’t want a visit at 2:30 in the morning! LOL!!!

September must be the month for travel. That’s some pretty die-hard sewing! I didn’t take a thing with me on our trip but usually I take travel time as the time to read–I no longer make time for it when I’m at home. Maybe next time some knitting tho…

Hi!! I listen to a lot of audio books when I’m quilting, so I get a lot of “reading” done then!!! And yes, I also take knitting along with me, sometimes …

I listen to a lot of books as well but not all of my want-to-reads are available that way so vacay is a good time to catch up on those.

That looks like the perfect sewing machine for your camper! That right arm will build a lot of muscle, too. Your floral blocks are really pretty!

Hi Gail, it must be difficult guiding the fabric and cranking the machine at the same time! Good for you for keeping at it! Your Floral Fusion blocks are looking good. I need to print up the templates and get caught up!

I find that Floral Fusion is so pretty that I just want to get it done!! Good luck catching up!!

A hand cranked machine – you are awesome to keep sewing on a dry camping trip – I don’t think I could. And you are up to prompt 3 on SAHRR!! I am going to start looking at mine in October, but its a good reminder to get it onto the list!

Hand cranking is SLOW … but I then I could sew when lazing at the campsite! And yes, prompt #3 is in progress!! I’m hoping to finish the quilt before we start! But hoping doesn’t always materialize into being done! 🙂

Very cool to have a view like that while you were cranking along on your machine!

Yes, I enjoyed it!!! And when the deer came along, it gave me a break from hand cranking!

Well, your hand sewing machine seems to work well, and it’s great exercise! Wonderful view from your traveling studio! Your floral blocks are very pretty, it’s going to be a lovely quilt. Thank you for sharing your adventures!

Thanks, Frédérique! The hand crank might be good exercise, but I couldn’t sew for as long as I sew on an electric machine. But, it did the job!
I’m loving Floral Fusion! it will be very pretty!

Lots of pretty scenery to see while you stitched. Congrats on both your stitching time and fabric usage metrics. You’ve done really well on both fronts this year. Hope you get a chance to do a bit more glamping before it really gets cold.

Thanks, Kate! I don’t think we’ll be glamping until the spring. It got below freezing a couple of nights! Thankfully, the furnace in the 5th wheel worked well!
