A Friday finish!!! :-)

Yes, you read that correctly!  I have a finish.  YEAH!!!!

img_5614.jpgThis is an old UFO … from 2008.  It was a class at Wineberries Quilt store with Jane Norquay teaching.  It was a Japanese star stack and whack class.  It was a fantastic class to take and it was so good to cut out the huge star pieces in the classroom … If I remember correctly, Jane helped each one of us to ensure we had the perfect cut.  Yes, it did take a lot of fabric (we needed 8 repeats) and we all used Japanese fabric.  I just loved the teal/pink in the main fabric. but it was hard to find coordinating fabrics.  The pink is a fairy frost from Michel Miller and the teal in the border is a Moda marble.

Here are some close-ups of the centre of the star and the 4 corner stars:

I struggled big time with quilting this.  It wasn’t until the very end that I finally discovered that the difficulty was the thread.  My machine (and now I) definitely do NOT like YLI 40 wt verigated thread.  After numerous thread breaks and weird stitching, and lots of visiting with my seam ripper, I finially switched to an Aurifil thread of a similar colour and had NO further problems!  The rest of the YLI spool went into the trash bin.

One who sleeps under a quilt is covered by LOVE!

Happy Quilting!

  3. Hi Gail, what an amazing quilt! I really love how well the fabric goes together in the centre star. Isn`t it funny about thread – you just never know what your machine likes or dislikes until you try. Thanks so much for linking up to Free Motion Mavericks. Congrats on your finish!

  4. We’ve all had thread problems and I’m so sorry you had some too! But the finish is lovely! Thanks for sharing on Wednesday Wait Loss.

  5. Congratulations on your finish. It must feel good to have that long term UFO finally finished. Now you can admire all those Japanese prints every day. Thank you for linking up to the Peacock Party.

  6. This is beautiful, Gail! And hooray for an older UFO being done, done, done! I’ve always had trouble with YLI thread as well and don’t buy it; my machine doesn’t like it either.

  7. Congratulations on your finish! Woo hoo!🎉🎉

I also enjoyed your blog and look forward to reading more! Currently, I am taking a ‘brake’ from my beginning quilting attempts and look forward to getting back into it again….I am planning to retire, set up quilting space and go for it!

Until then, take care, and Enjoy!

    • Hi Jan!
I’m glad you enjoy my blog!
Taking a break is fine – especially if you plan to return to what you enjoy! I love being retired and I love my new quilting space!
Happy Quilting (after your break!) 🙂

  8. Hi Gail! How great to have a finish today, especially one that’s been hanging around since 2008. I’m so sorry you had thread issues – I hate that! You wonder why, but it’s easier to just avoid that brand and keep your machine happy. ~smile~ Roseanne

    • Interesting … it was my Janome 8900 that didn’t like it. I didn’t even try it on my other Janome! And, I’m not going to dig through the trash to find it and try it. 🙂
      Happy Quilting, Wendy! 🙂
