Give it a Whirl Blog Hop

Carol from Just Let Me Quilt is the organizer and host for this Whirly Blog Hop.

Here’s what she had to say:

Challenge: Life can send us spinning sometimes, so let’s put those spins and whirls to good use in a quilt. Make something with pinwheel blocks, circle quilting, or whirly gigs. Try not to whirl out of control!

I went to EQ8 to figure out how many 8″ pinwheels, using 4″ HST, I would need for a decent size baby quilt. Here’s what I came up with: 15 pinwheel blocks and (15) 8 1/2″ unfinished squares.

Using Island Batik’s Sunny Meadow collection and solid white, I used the 8″ cube die to cut all of the triangles for the half square triangles. The cutting was done quickly, very quickly! I pieced it together and then had fun quilting! And yes, I just might have ‘whirled out of control‘ in the quilting. But I enjoyed every single minute of it!

Here are some close ups of the quilting:

Quilt Stats:

  • Size: 40″ x 48″
  • Hobbs 80/20 inside
  • Aurifil Thread:
    • Piecing: #2600 Dove Grey
    • Quilting: #2835 Medium Mint

At the moment, I’m debating whether to donate it or keep it for a special baby that I know nothing about … he or she may not even be conceived at this time. Time will tell.

  2. Hi Gail, what amazing and fun quilting! It will make the perfect baby quilt for some future baby. Thanks so much for linking up to FM Mavericks. It had to be fun to quilt! Have a great week.

  4. That quilt is phenomenal! The quilting elevates what could have been a very simple design.

Thank you for listing your batting too. I have problems getting my quilting to sink into the quilt and show dimensionality, so when I saw your nicely defined quilting, I was wondering if you used some wonder product, but I use Hobbs 80/20 too so I guess my problems are operator failure and not product choice. :)

    • Thank you!! When I want the quilting to show, I use a contrasting colour. In this case, I used a mint green against the white … it’s subtle, but shows. If I really really want the quilting to show, I use Hobbs Wool batting – it’s fantastic for showing off quilting!

      • That is a great tip about the color of the thread!
I tried wool batting once because I do really love the look of it and how it sets off the quilting (not positive if it was Hobbs) and it was so thick, I couldn’t get it through my sewing machine. (I don’t have a long arm.) I am very slowly hand quilting it. Then I will have to give it to someone up North because it will be too heavy to use here in Texas. 🙂

      • Maybe try Hobbs wool batting. All of my quilting is done on my domestic sewing machine. I don’t have a long arm. I actually don’t notice much difference moving it through the machine. A friend of mine in Florida likes to use wool batting, he says it’s nice and not too hot! Go figure?

  5. The creation of pinwheels in the white four patches with quilting is very pretty. Then I noticed the quilting in the white of the pinwheel blocks and think you out did yourself.
