My New Design Wall

As I move into my new sewing room, my hubby knew I wanted a design wall against one wall at the end of the room.

It’s an outdoor shade awning that rolls up.  You can see the mechanism that rolls it up on the right.  My husband has attached it to a “thingies” at the bottom, so that it is stiff.  I need to release the “thingies” in order to roll it up.  That’s not going to happen very often.

I took a queen size flannel sheet that I have been using on a bed for my design bed.  I serged the edges and removed the brown stripes.  We laid the awning out on the living room floor and used 505 spray on the back of the flannel sheet.  Then the sheet was smoothed into place.  I used little quilting safety pins to pin the top (about 3″ apart), the sides and bottom (about 6″ apart).  We made sure that the pins were horizontal so that it would “flow” nicely as it was rolled up.  The final step was to spray the top with 505 so that the block pieces would stick.

My husband then hung the design wall from the ceiling.

The blocks on the design wall are the first 12 of the 52 block in 52 weeks.  They are 6″ blocks.  I think know I’m WAY behind in my blocks!  I will catch up one of these days.  I hope!

  4. What a great design wall! My husband started making me a retractable design wall almost two years ago (there is a winch involved) but we got stuck after version A didn’t work and haven’t gone back to it. This has inspired me to try to make it work!

    • Ah, yes, Kathleen! I know that I will still be using a flannel backed tablecloth at times. How else can I work on 3 different projects at the same time? 🙂

    • My husband credits the “blind” lady at Home Depot. He was originally looking at blinds and she was the one that suggested a shade awning! And the bonus is that they are on “end of season” sale!

      Yes, the sewing room is coming together! It’s been a L-O-N-G time in the finishing! But sorting and organizing does take a LOT of time!

    • Hi Denise, I used a flannel-backed tablecloth or a flannel sheet on a bed for years and years. I’m sure if you think about what will work, you’ll come up with a solution! The beauty of this design wall is that it can be rolled up and out of the way (if I want).

    • LOL!!! Did you actually think that all my stuff would fit in the room? You doubted that it would fit? Well, lets say that I have most of it in the room … of course, I can’t fit in all of the antique machines … The room tour will happen … soon, I hope! Love to you & your family! HUGS!
