Day 14

Assemble the rest of the Eeyore block.

As you are sewing the EARS onto the sides of the face, there are 2 things to be aware of:

First: Sew them so the orientation is correct – not like this!

Second … when you put the EARS next to the FACE, you will notice that it is ½” short.  This is OK.  Just line them up at the bottom … when you add the large white 6.5″ square to the top for the last  STOP step, that ½” difference will be cut off.  As you can see from the upside down ears, I added extra – but in the end, it was cut off … SEW, you don’t need to make the same mistake that I did!

And, here is the finished Eeyore block!  I love how his eyes are looking up and to the side!

Day 12.   I found Eeyore’s block took the longest to piece, so it’ll be broken into 3 days instead of 2 that we used for Winnie,

Following the directions:

  • Use the STOP method to make the MANE
  • Make the EYES
  • Sew the Pink EAR pieces (Ee) to the Blue EAR pieces (!)
  • Sew the MANE together (not shown in the picture below)

Cut Eeyore’s Fabric.

Two adjustments to the cutting:

  • On the blue there should be 2 pieces 2.5″ x 10.5″  (E)
  • you don’t need to cut (d) 2.5″ x 8.5″

When I cut the pieces for Eeyore’s blue, I cut 3 strips of width of fabric then they were subcut into the amounts given in the pattern.

  • 4.5″
  • 2.5″
  • 1.5″

Day 8.

Before you start cutting: 

Look at the ORANGE  G instructions.  Does it tell you to cut (2) 3½” squares?   IMPORTANT: If it does say 3½” – you have the OLD version that is not correct.  Go and download the Tigger and Eeyore pages of the updated version.  HERE.   All you need is those 2 pages … the rest of the old version is fine.

If it says 2 (3″) … then carry on and …

Cut out Tigger’s pieces.

… appears to be moving along smoothly.   I haven’t had any requests as to “how do I do this?”  And that tells me that the instructions are understandable!  I didn’t have any trouble following them, so I’m hoping that everyone else is finding the same thing!

I want to keep my other posts separate from the Winnie posts, so that’s why you’re getting 2 posts today!

This was my #22 of the 2020 Start … and it’s now finished … Yes, I know, the binding in the top left corner is not finished.  It’s where I will put the label when I know the baby’s details.  It’s quilted with stars and loops … I started out to do 5 point stars, but many of them are 6 point … oh well, who’s counting?

This quilt, although it took me several weeks to make (because I was doing a ton of other things) is actually a quick quilt to make.  The HST started out as 7″ squares.  Were sewn down ¼” from the centre on both sides and trimmed to 6½”.  They finish at 6″ in the quilt.

Quilt Stats:

  • This quilt is 48″ x 60″
  • Hobbs 80/20 batting
  • Glide “Sterling” for the quilting, Aurifil #2000 for the binding

Tidying and Cleaning

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_3884I have a horrible habit of starting another project just as one project is finishing, or almost finished or is partly done.  And, consequently, NOTHING gets put away or tidied up.  Those of you that know me are nodding your heads and thinking “She is telling the truth!!  A recent conversation on my guild’s Facebook page talked about setting our phone alarms to remind us to clean up our sewing rooms.  I jokingly said that if I set my alarm to clean up, I’d likely ignore it and my room wouldn’t be tidied.   Well, the state of my sewing room and I had a clash this week.  It was SOOOOO bad, it was really bad … This picture is just a small corner of my sewing desk (2 containers – materials for the retreat bag, left-over backing, left-over border fabric, scraps … and who knows what else was hidden in there?  Anyhow,  I spent 2 hours tidying and vacuuming and dusting and putting fabric away.  What a difference it made … and I think I was able to work better afterwards!  SEW … you can see on my To Do list below, that I aim to work on my sewing room each week!

SEW … what do you do when Quilt Canada is cancelled? 

Quilt CanadaMy sister and 2 cousins were all planning to go to Quilt Canada together, which was scheduled for later this week.  We also decided it would be fun do a project together and decided on the Retreat Bag.  This is a free bag from Emmaline Bags.  We live in different communities in Canada and can’t be together.  (Ontario, Albera and B.C.) So, we will be making this bag together with a few Zoom meetings during the day!  (Doesn’t it sound like fun?)

Winner of Some of my Fabric

Way back in May, I offered some of the fabric that was left-over from the Island Batik Home Decor Blog Hop.  See HERE.  I used a random generator and Delaine of Onoway Alberta was chosen.  She quickly sent me her address and within a couple of weeks (yes, the post is s-l-o-w) she let me know that she had received the fabric!

Day 6.  Do all the “STOP” pieces for Piglet (see pattern directions).   Mark and sew Piglet’s triangles … remember to sew a thread width from the line – towards where you will cut.   Cut the triangles 1/4″ from the seam.  Remember to press all the seams open.

Day 4.  Assemble the Winnie block.  Make sure that you play close attention to the orientation of the pieces.   I did press all of the seams open, EXCEPT for the one at the base of the mouth.    I pressed that seam down towards the chin.

Now … you should have your Winnie Block done!   Here’s mine!

June 8 – Day 1 Winnie the Pooh Quilt-A-Long

June 8: Day 1.   Pull your fabrics

  • The pattern gives you measurements for the background and binding
  • For Pooh – I had a 9″ piece, Width of fabric of the yellow.  This was enough, until I cut the largest piece in half … So now my Winnie has a line in his forehead. If you are afraid of making mistakes, make sure you have more than 1/3 of a yard of the yellow.
  • For Piglet – I had a fat quarter of the light pink, with lots left over.
  • I’ll give you approximate amounts for Tigger & Eeyore, once I’m to that stage.
  • For the rest of the fabrics, I just raided my scraps …

This Quilt Along is being broken into small steps.  I’m planning for approximately half an hour each day.  Some days it may be a bit less, others a bit more. But that is the plan.

That’s it for today … just pulling your fabrics.

I’ve sandwiched what was originally going to be a baby quilt – until I changed my mind and finished the elephant quilt (see HERE)… and hopefully the no-longer for the baby quilt will go under my needle SOON!

Free Theme: Island Batik – June

6 - Free Theme

This is the title for June’s Island Batik challenge.  We can make what we want … but of course we need to use fabulous Island Batik Fabric, Aurifil thread, Hobbs Batting and Schmetz Needles!  I didn’t use the Accuquilt Go! for this month’s project. However, the Accuquilt Go! would have been used if I wasn’t using a strip set!

In an earlier post, I teased you with the start of my project.  Doesn’t the black make those blues just POP?

fullsizeoutput_c64The Island Batik fabric I used is a fantastic strip pack called Kismet!  Add a little Bubblegum pink (on the right), Island Batik’s Solid black and this is what I came up with:

I started off following a video by Man Sewing with a variation of The Three Dudes Quilt.  I made the blocks as he instructs, then I went off on my own tangent, rearranging the blocks and adding sashing.   The Island Batik strip set was PERFECT for this pattern.  There are 2 each of the individual fabrics. Otherwise, you’d need to buy 2 strip sets.

The blocks were made by making strata strip sets, cutting them at 14″ and placing them right sides together … one horizontal and one vertical.  Sew around the outside and then cut the blocks diagonally.  Once the blocks were made, I didn’t care for the layout that Man Sewing did … SEW, I changed the arrangement until I was happy.

 

I forgot to take a picture before I sewed the blocks together … so the picture on the left is of the wrong sides of the blocks.

Here’s a couple of close-ups of the quilting.  I definitely think I was some-what influenced by the quilting I did with the Helen Godden Flower Power quilt-along.

There wasn’t enough fabric for the back, so I put in a diagonal piece.  The purple fabric is “Geometric Arrow Plum” from the Santa Fe fabric collection and the pink is “Bubblegum”

Here’s my process for the diagonal back …

I put the top on the design wall.  I cut the rich purple piece diagonally (no it’s not at a 45 … it’s the length of the quilt, plus about 8″ … and that piece was cut from corner to corner.  I placed it over the quilt top. Then I measured the distance between the 2 purple pieces and cut a strip of the Bubblegum fabric that width, plus 2″.  When I do diagonal backs, I don’t want the diagonal to end up in the corners … it’s too difficult to make it line up perfectly … But, I’ll say it’s to eliminate the bulk in the corners (grin!)  This method is pretty easy to do with Island Batik fabrics as it doesn’t stretch (much) on the bias.  If I was using regular quilt fabric, I’d place a thin strip of interfacing down the cut.

  • Thread: Aurifil #4030 for the quilting … it’s a wine coloured thread.  It blended with some of the purple, but showed up on everything else.
  • Bobbins: 8!  yes, 8 bobbins … there’s a LOT of quilting in this one!
  • Binding: 2¼” of Geometric Arrow: Plum
  • Batting Hobbs Cotton Batting
  • Schmetz Needles: Chrome Microtex 80/12

I’m working on quilting  my June Island Batik project … and silly me … the quilting is fairly dense – so it’s taking me awhile!  Here’s a picture of 2 parts of the quilt and the fabric that I was given by Island Batik!  Kismet is a Fall 2019 release designed by Tammy Silvers of Tamarinis.  It should be available in stores now.  It’s a BEAUTIFUL collection of fabric!

Monday update: June 1

“Big Brother’s” quilt is done!  I used the pattern from this video, and then to make it a bit bigger, I added 2½” wide sashing and cornerstones.  This is the very first time I’ve used a light binding … I like it, but I’m not sure how it will be for a toddler quilt!  Will have to wait and see.

Quilt Stats:

  • Size:  44″ x 58
  • Quilted with:  a light, light blue CanSew thread.  Stars and Swirls
  • Hobbs 80/20 batting

A Friday Finish

This is a UFO from 2016.  It was one that I listed as the top 12 to get finished this year.   It was #6 on the list and I briefly talked about it HERE.

This quilt has Hobbs 80/20 batting and was quilted with Aurfil thread #2021.  I echoed the 2 green elephants and the ‘ghost’ elephant up above.  The echoing is very organic … and I didn’t need to worry about it always being the same distance apart!  I was feeling very lazy and didn’t want to cut circles for the eyes … so I used my Inktense pencil to draw a blue circle & outlined it with black.  After spraying it with water, I heat set them.  They should stand up to many washings.Then there is stippling in each of the elephants.

Both the label and the binding is from Island Batik solid grey.  This light grey was perfect for the quilt!

Winnie the Pooh Sew-a-long

Are you interested in a Winnie the Pooh Sew-a-long?  Want to join me as I make this quilt?  I emailed Lorna (the designer) about hosting a Sew-a-long and she said, “Sounds fine with me Gail! I would love to have you host a quilt along featuring them.”

SEW … I’m thinking of starting on Monday, June 8.  That will give you (and me) 2 weeks to pull fabric or go shopping.  I’m thinking that if we do one character a day or every 2 days … we’ll be finished in just over a week.    I’m not 100% sure, because I haven’t made any of them yet … I will see how long it takes me to make each face and then decide on the schedule.  There are a LOT of pieces to cut.  However,  I do plan to start on June 8.
