My first October finish!!!

Woohoo!!!  Wonky Logs! It’s done! Done! Done!

This is the finished quilt – in front of a less colourful tree. (The leaves are all gone from the tree pictured HERE).

Sew … this quilt was serged together … you can see my comments about that HERE.  My last question about serging a quilt was how would it be to quilt it.  One longarmer sent me a message saying that as long as the seams were ironed in the same direction, there would be no problem.  Well … due to how the quilt is assembled, the seams go every which way.

How did I find the quilting?  I think it would have been fine if I had picked a quilting design that was not as dense and that didn’t go up to all the seams.  There were places … ugly places where it was just that little bit thicker … 

Would I serge a quilt again?  Even though the back was nice and neat and there were very few threads poking through the top – I would say “Probably not.”

 

Edit:  I was just reading over my post & I noticed that the blocks have changed position (groan!)   

Here are close-ups of all the blocks … As you can see, I tried to do something different in each block. Now, that was fun! Time consuming, but fun.  And, I used a couple of rulers.  With the red block, 2nd down on the right, edit: red centre / red outside log. I used a 2″ ruler for the circles … oh sew easy! This ruler has a special backing, so it does not slip!  Wonderful!

Every single FMQ class that I have taken has taught “Pebbles”.  Every. Single. Class.  I have dutifully done them in class, but not happily.  And then I’ve come home and avoided Pebbles completely.  The words “travel back over” made me dislike Pebbles from the very beginning!  But, I thought I’d give them a try (See the bottom left block) edit: the one with the gold as the middle log … they were OK to do.  Close up, they might not be the best … but they are done!

My cousin, Terry,  had suggested that I watch “Wild Quilting” by Christina Cameli on Craftsy/Blueprint (It’s free this week) … so I did … I binge watched a couple of her shows … she is full of many ideas and suggestions!  I also like her views on perfectionism … they mirror my own … “if it’s off a little, it’s ok” … “it’ll be hidden when the quilt is washed” …

Sew … even though this is my first October finish – it’s not a UFO – so it doesn’t count towards my PHD in 2018 … but it does count in the “Finish every 2018 start” for my PHD in 2018!

      I’m really liking the fact that my UFO list will not increase with a zillion projects that I started this year!
      Unfortunately, I was searching for something and I found this container that hadn’t been opened in who-knows-how-long? and behold … what did I find? Yup … more UFOs … groan! Oh well, If they don’t get done this year, I’ll be adding them to my 2019 UFO list.

  6. I love that you did this experiment and saw it all the way through. Serging before binding is an interesting thought. Well done on the variety of FMQ you put in. I hope you enjoy this quilt for all the things you tried in it as well as the end result.

  7. Hi Gail! What a fabulous job you did on this! I agree with Connie – I am in awe of all the different techniques you tried successfully. I dislike pebbles for the exact same reason, and I have avoided doing them. I think yours look great – didn’t Christina Cameli make them look easy?!! I binged watch three of her videos. I really like what she shared except for those darn pebbles. Anyhoo – great job! ~smile~ Roseanne

      It looks better in the pictures than in real life! 🙂
      I certainly would not advocate serging a quilt (for piecing). But, I do like serging the edges – it makes binding go on easily.
