PHD in 2018 – November Report

No finishes this week! Hopefully next week – right?

How are you doing with your UFOs?  Did you join us in reducing your UFOs to get your PHD in 2019?

I still have 2 UFOs to complete.  Quilting is still happening on this quilt:img_2592.jpg

IMG_2593Unfortunately, the quilting has taken a back burner to Bonnie Hunter’s Mystery, Good Fortune. And I have been cutting for the new clue that came out this morning.  I decided on dark dark blue/navy for my blues … There are approximately 1/5 of them cut out.  And, no, I have not finished the first clue … my teal 4 patches, they will get done, when they are done … it is not a race!  (now where did I put my running shoes? grin!)

And, I  have been playing with my new embroidery machine!  This will make a wine-tote for a Christmas gift for one of our neighbours.  This is not added onto my “Starts in 2018” but it will be and it will be finished in 2018.  It was a free embroidery pattern from Sulky Threads. (sorry, I couldn’t find the link).

Here’s how other participants in PHD in 2018 are doing:

  • Deena from Dreamworthy Quilts posted in mid November that she only had one quilt to finish for her PHD in 2018 and she was feeling great about it!  And then – on her next post, she stated that she had started a super cute Turkey quilt … hmmm… so we will have to wait and see if she gets it done before the end of the year! However, she has finished some wonderful quilts for her PHD in 2018!
  • Terry, my cousin in Ontario has not been blogging recently.  She has been quilting – a bit- but we’ll have to wait and see if she blogs in the near future. Her Blog is TLC Quilts – Sew what’s next?
    • Update:  Terry just posted this in the comments & I thought I’d copy it here! Just last night I finished the flimsy on my last PHD project. Sandwich, quilt, label … Then DONE!!
I already know what my challenge will be for myself next year – I want to use up all my stash and my scraps (or at least as much of my scraps as possible).
Both my sons moved out this month so I’ve also been busy moving my sewing room to the basement.
      Whew…lotta change this year.
      Cheers
      Terry
  • Kate from “Life in Pieces”  is doing well with her 15 minutes of stitching a day!  She’s maintaining close to a 94% average!   If you want to increase your sewing time by at least 15 minutes / day … you might want to consider joining Kate’s 15 minutes of stitching a day!
  • Ann from Laughing Gas Quilts”  has been diligently working on her PHD in 2018 … she’ll likely blog in the near future to tell us about her progress.
  • Emily from “the Darling Dogwood” recently finished a needle-turn appliqué quilt that is bee-U-ti- full!!!  She talks about how most pieces were from her scraps … it looks like she bought them all together!  Isn’t it wonderful how things go together sometimes?
  • Roseanne, from “Home Sewn By US” wrote and told me that she wouldn’t be getting her PHD in 2018 this year … but she has definitely made a gallant effort!
  • Elizabeth, from “Appliqué and …. knitting, stitchery, genealogy, food” wrote at the beginning of November that she still has not moved into her new place yet and wasn’t too hopeful until Dec.  That makes it super hard to finish UFOs when they are in storage!
  • Susan, from California, is following along by Instagram.  I’m not sure how she is doing as her Instagram shows a few tops that are not quilted. Go to her Instagram page to see her finishes.

PHD in 2019: Quilting UFOs and Finishing New Projects

Yes, there will be a PHD in 2019.  I still have TOO MANY UFOs to complete.  I did enjoy the challenge of completing all of my 2018 starts.  Plus, I was motivated by those that joined me and encouraged me to complete all that I have set out to do!  You can join us if you want.  Here’s what you need to do.

  1. Make a list of at least 12 UFOs that you want to complete in 2019.
  2. Take a picture of them
  3. Post the picture on
    • your blog
    • a Pinterest board
    • Instagram
  4. Keep track of your 2019 starts & finish them in 2019.  (There are exceptions: BOMs that continue into 2020, Bonnie Hunter’s Mystery, December starts)
  5. Report monthly on your progress.
  6. Feel great with those decreasing UFOs!

Happy Quilting!
Gail

  1. It’s been fun watching everyone participate in your PhD program this year. You have been able to motivate so many people to tackle projects that have longed for their attention. You should be very proud of that!

  2. You’ve made amazing progress on your UFOs this year. I moved a lot of projects along, but didn’t get as many to completion as I wanted. I’ll play along next year, the more motivation the better.

    • Hi Kate,
It’s not until I really look that I see what I’ve gotten done!
You’ve done well this year! You’ve got a lot done. Perhaps not what you wanted, but still – your 15 minutes of daily stitching have helped some, I’m sure!
      Happy Quilting! 🙂

    • YEAH!!! Way to go, Terry! You are the first one to report that you have accomplished your PHD in 2018!!!! Congratulations! I can imagine your sewing room in Adam’s “den”!!! That will be a fantastic space to spread out your quilting stuff! Although, I do know that you keep a very very neat and organized sewing room!
      Happy Quilting, cousin! 🙂
