Moving through the UFOs …

This “Irish Snails” quilt was a kit … I’m not sure I like buying kits … I loved the sea-shell fabric – that’s what sold me on this kit.  However, there was not enough brown in the kit to make the pattern with the borders as instructed.  Luckily, I was able to get the exact brown fabric locally.  The pattern is by Peggy Gelbrich of Yellow House Quilter and is available HERE.  It’s an easy pattern to follow!

Anyhow, this quilt is in the process of being quilted.  IMG_2589

Summary: TWO UFOs to complete!  One (picture above) is being quilted!  Another is ready to sandwich!  All projects started in 2018 are finished!  PHD in 2018 is looking like a reality for me!

Good Fortune: Bonnie Hunter Mystery

IMG_2590.JPG

This is the start of my first clue … As you can see, I used teal instead of red.

I’m not sure what my other colours will be.  But I’m thinking a dark blue or navy for the “blue” … pink for the orange and mauve or grey for the green or mauve for the green and grey for the orange. Confused? Maybe! I am certainly undecided!  Hmmm … I don’t need to make any decisions yet …

Bonnie’s Monday Linkup for Clue 1 is HERE.

Stash Report

IMG_2588What is it with me buying fabric so late in the year? I have done sew well (if I do say so myself!)  On Friday, I was sewing with some friends and one mentioned that Castles Sewing Centre had a Black Friday sale. “Not interested,” was my immediate reply.  Then she explained that they had both flannel and cotton 110″ wide backings on sale for a really good price.  That caught my interest! I went and bought 3 backs and one for my friend.  Then on Saturday, the sale was still on, and my hubby wanted to see what else they had … He bought 4 backings!  OH YES … next year, he is getting his own stash report!

Ivan’s Diamonds (shown on the left) used 10.5 yards

  • Fabric Used this week:  10.5 yardsIvan's Diamonds - red, pink, green & brown
  • Fabric Used this year:   263.1 yards
  • Fabric Added this Week:    21  (12 of it was my husbands!)
  • Fabric Added this Year:   109.3 yards

Happy Quilting!

    • Thank you for your kind words! Yes, getting a lot of UFOs completed has helped clear up a lot of fabric! I think that there might even be a big bin that is almost empty! WhooHoo!
      Happy Quilting! 🙂

    • Hi Sue!
Thank you! Yes, I was lucky … by finding the exact fabric – it is easier to finish a quilt!
I just went to your blog … I’m loving your dark neutral!
      Happy Quilting! 🙂

  1. I don’t think buying backings should count, because you need them all the time when you are finishing things! Definitely not your husband’s buys, though! =) Of course, if they come out of the stash, they should count! LOL That Ivan’s diamonds is almost as pretty as the original. I really LIKE that pattern! The snails trail kit made a great top, but I’m glad you were able to get the brown you needed. I don’t buy kits for quilts, and rarely for anything small. Once in a while, a wool kit, but not many of those, either. You did well, even with the buying, I think.

    • Thank you for your encouraging words … I definitely think that I will keep track of my husbands purchases … and I will count his purchases as “his” use … maybe! Ha! Ha!
I do love my Ivan’s Diamonds pattern!

  2. I don’t think it counts if you buy backing fabrics. You need those to finish your quilts. I’ve got one on order that isn’t coming in until February.. I actually bought another one somewhere else but decided to keep it on order as I have another turquoise quilt to put borders on and quilt. So it’s all good. Enjoy the mystery.

  3. That’s always my fear with buying kits – not enough fabric. Happened to me on the most recent one I purchased. I’m glad you were able to find the exact fabric you needed to finish your quilt. The seashell fabric looks great – I can see why you picked up that kit! I avoided buying any fabric too, but it will happen today. I have 3 quilts that need backs and the local LQS has it for 30% off. I have to get it, right? 🙂

  4. You have done so well on your goals for 2018. The PHD challenge really helped me to get a ton done!

I too am thinking of starting Bonnie’s mystery. I did it one year and didn’t like the result at all. I changed it up a bit and ended up with a nice quilt. I decided then and now that I will use fabrics that I have in my stash that I am not overly attached to.

    Your colors sound wonderful!

    • Hi Deana,

Thank you! I’m glad the PHD challenge has helped you! You have been doing GREAT!

I love doing Bonnie’s mysteries. I learn so much from her! There have been a couple of quilts that were not exactly my favourite, and, like you, I changed it up. I, too, only use stash that I have … in the end, I might buy backing … but even then, I try to use what’s in my stash.

      Happy Quilting! 🙂

  6. Hi Gail! TWO to go! Woot woot. You are inches from crossing the finish line. You can easily wrap these two up in remaining days of 2018. I’m so proud of you! Just think of all the people you inspired over the year! Even though I’m not going to earn a PHD, I will finish up 12 UFOs. Just a fraction of the amount you did, but I am thrilled with the end result. I love the teal fabrics you are using on Good Fortune. I look forward to seeing that project come together. Happy Happy Sunday to you! ~smile~ Roseanne

    • Hi Roseanne!

Thank you! You are always SEW very encouraging!!!

I’m so HAPPY that you will at least finish up 12 UFOs!!! That may be 12 quilts that might have ended up sitting in your UFO pile for another year! But each stitch on a UFO is one stitch closer to completion!

I’m stepping out of my box using teal! But it was sitting in my stash … who knows what I will put with it?

      Happy Quilting! 🙂
