Wine Gift BagEmbroidery Wine Gift Bag - a free pattern from Sulky Threads

With the sun getting lower in the sky, it’s hard to find a spot to take pictures.  I had to go out to the front yard and take one by the gate.

This is a free embroidery pattern from Sulky Threads. You just have to give them your email address to access their free projects. (And I haven’t recieved a ton of email from them!)

Sew – what did I learn while making this project?

  • I learned that it stitched out WAY better with batting and stabilizer than with just stabilizer.  Since I wanted to give the bag more body – I stitched it out again with batting.
  • At the end, the instructions tell you to make a “cat ear,” but neglects to tell you how big to make the ear.  Thankfully, I had made a few bags with boxed bottoms, so I knew what to do.  I sewed mine about 1″ from the corner.  It was perfect.  I also found that tacking the “ear” down one the bag made with batting made it so the bag would not stand on it’s own.  So, I cut it off and it stands very nicely!  However, on the one without batting, it is fine with the cat ear tacked down.
  • The instructions tell you to cut the rope / ribbon/ bias tape in half, but do not tell you how long to cut it in the first place.  I cut the ribbon at 1 yard, and when cut in half, I had (2) 18″ pieces.

Two bags are made, but since we only had one bottle of wine in the house – I only took a picture of one bag.  This used a total of 1 yard of fabric.

Another NEW start?

IMG_2603Oh dear!!!  Yes.  I need a quilt for a Christmas gift.  For awhile I thought Irish Snails was going to be the gift.  And, the more I quilted it, the more I knew that it was not to be.  SEW … I started “4 Patch Charm Quilt” from Tamarack Shack.  A co-worker had made this quilt and I fell in love with it! The pattern calls for 3 charm packs … but I used 24 squares from a layer cake (10″ squares).  I cut them and made my own 5″ charms.  The layer cake was not on the UFO list – because until I saw this pattern, I had NO idea what I would make with the layer cake.  It was bought EONS ago … my cousin, from Ontario, had brought her Dad  to visit a friend and we ended up going out to Hamels and I fell in love with the browns / beiges of the layer cake.  (How long ago was that, Connie?)

I started this quilt yesterday and got all the blocks made.  I’ve started webbing the blocks together … then all I need to do is add the borders, quilt, bind, make a label and call ‘er done!  Easy … should be done in time for Christmas … but ideally, I’d like it done before the weekend so that delivery is easier. BUT, we have company from the interior coming for a couple of nights and have a breakfast date later in the week in Vancouver with friends from Australia (we haven’t seen them for about 23 years!)  And, I work 2 full days this week.  Sew … quilting time will be greatly decreased!

Good Fortune: Bonnie Hunter Mystery

I have not finished Clue 1 – a few more are done since I took this picture, and I’ve got some of Clue 2 done.  (I’ve decided on teal for red / navy for blue).  I still don’t know what my other colours will be.  Green? Mauve? Grey? Pink?

Irish Snails is still being quilted.  The 4 Patch Charm quilt is next in line, then a UFO baby quilt.

  2. It’s always nice to find a pattern that uses fabric that’s been in the stash for a bit. Good luck with your BH mystery patches. How very mysterious to wait till you need the fabrics to decide on the color. Looking forward to seeing what you choose next.

      Yes, waiting to decide what my colours will be adds to the mystery! One person suggested purple for clue 3 … so, I went with it … maybe someone will suggest what colour I need next! 🙂

  7. Golly, Gail, Dad died four years ago, and that trip was a couple of years before that!! GLad you have six to seven year old fabric too! But I’m impressed you remember when and where you got it….I wouldn’t have a clue where it came from!!

      Thanks for “dating” my purchase! I only remember because it was a fun time for me to shop with you and it’s the only batik layer cake that I have ever bought … I think I was just getting “introduced” to batiks!

  10. Hi Gail! That wine bag turned out so well! The embroidery pattern really fills the front of the bag nicely – I’m guess nothing on the other side? Whoever that is for, they will enjoy it.       Thank you!
      For the wine tote, I did cut out fabric for the front and back … and when I put the first bag together (with a satin lining), I realized that I cut out enough fabric for 4 bags, not 2. (the one fabric wraps around and there is a centre seam at the back). Sew .. there may be more bags in the future! 🙂
