PHD in 2020: Nov. 1 Report

SEW … how are YOU doing with your PHD in 2020?

  • Are you getting there?
  • Are you thinking of starting?
  • Have you given up?

Where ever you are with your UFOs … if you’ve made any progress at all … that is good! Very good!

This year, I have done (in my opinion) extremely well with finishing UFOs. So far, I have finished 17! And when I consider that one UFO turned into 3 quilts … (Florabunda) … and another UFO turned into 2 quilts … (Dog & Cat) … Yup … I’m pretty pleased!

Then, in June, I had completed all of the UFOs necessary for my PHD in 2020 … sew … what did I do … I went and said that I had to complete 6 more UFOs in 2020 – for a total of 18. I have 17 now completed. WHOOT WHOOT!!!

And yes, there will be enough to carry on with PHD in 2021! By the end of 2021, I should have NO UFOs left. What a crazy feeling that will be!

Several fellow quilting friends of mine FINISH each quilt before going on to the next. I’m not sure I could EVER do that … some of my quilts need to sit and be thought about before moving onto the next step. However, by making myself finish each start by Dec. 31, I have very few UFOs carried into the following year.

Quiltville Mystery

Did you see that Bonnie Hunter has her fabric requirements up for “Grassy Creek” – the 2020/21 mystery! Make sure you go check it out!

Bonnie says that the quilt finishes at 94″x 94″. That’s big. If it’s too big for you, do half as many pieces … or even a quarter of the pieces. It’s a fantastic way to learn a LOT of tricks in quilting! I have learned SEW much from Bonnie – it’s hard to describe it all! You can treat Grassy Creek as a free class!

  1. You’ve had such a great year of finishing up your UFOs. Congrats on all that you got done last month. Even though I’m not finishing as much as I’d like the PHD challenge helps me keep projects moving along.

  2. 17 finishes this year SO FAR is pretty fantastic. Great job! Thanks for getting us all together for the Linky Party again this month. The accountability is great motivation!

  3. I think I might make it! I’m up to six, or seven if you count the quilt that turned into two as two instead of one. Plus two more that are fabrics I owned and projects I planned but hadn’t started, so they technically weren’t UFOs but I said in my start that I could count up to 4 of those. And I found another UFO not on my original list and it’s at the binding stage. I’m hoping I make it! I have done well with finishing things I started this year, at least.

  4. Hi Gail,
Love the rectangle quilt…so pretty..I’ve decided to join in with PHD…I have a question for you. I was wondering what you use to get your PHD charts…or do you make them yourself. Thanks for any info you can give me..have a great day!

  5. Hi Gail! I would have to conquer with you and your opinion. You ARE doing fabulously on your UFO completion. No doubt about it AND you are inspiring others by hosting the PHD. I have never made one of BH’s quilts that I know of, or joining in her QAL. I will go check out the link you’ve shared because maybe 2021 is time for trying something new. I know I will be in good company because I know oodles of friends who join in. ~smile~ Roseanne

    • Hi Roseanne,
About Bonnie’s mystery: If nothing else, do 1/4 of her units and you will learn a TON!!! She always has neat tricks and quick ways to make things. It’s like being in a class with her!
      Happy Quilting! 🙂

  6. Well done on your fabulous progress this year Gail. I’ve well and truly got behind but it’s been a case of little sewing rather than forgetting about my list! Never mind, for 2021 I will have my list formulated and ready to go!

  7. It certainly looks like you will meet your goals. Congratulations. I started off with you in January but by March I had a whole lot of “life” going on. I am working slower on my list but I have gotten a lot done. I liked the suggestion of putting one a month down as a reasonable goal and not to start projects I can’t complete by the end of the year. This was much better than just making a list of all UFOs.

    • Hey Pamela, at least you are getting things done!!!
Personally, for me, making sure I finish everything I start is really helping to not increase the UFOs I have!
      Happy Quilting! 🙂
