Another “no finish” Friday

OK … I’ve been busy … it’s OK to not have a finish to write about today … really it is …

Yesterday & today, I was helping a friend with her booth “The Steamtrunk.”  It’s work, but it’s fun.  I get to visit with my friend while we set up, and then, when the customers come, I get to see a lot of people that I haven’t seen for awhile.  Yes, it’s fun!  I didn’t have time to take a picture of the booth today – these pictures are from a year ago.

Orca Bay

IMG_1528Is webbed together!  I had the blocks all organized in my weird “scrap” organization way … I had all but one column of Ohio stars and one of red triangles and blue string blocks left to do and I realized that I didn’t have enough of the red triangle blocks.  In fact, I was 17 short.  Oh GROAN!  Oh groan! … SEW … my rationalization kicked in. Here’s my thinking:

  • I don’t want all 17 of those blocks in the final section to be almost identical.
  • I don’t want to take out any of the webbing.
  • I’m running out of black and I’m not going to buy fabric – no way!!!

img_1527.jpgSo my conclusion is: finish the quilt just like the pattern says.  Make it bigger by adding borders … Yes, I do have 4 black and 4 white Ohio stars left and some of the blue string blocks … but I can do a few things with them.  I can make a table runner, make a tote bag, make a few zipper bags or put them on the “free” table at the guild.

Of course, at this point in time, I don’t really have a plan … but if I do something with them – you’ll find out in a future blog post.

A grandma’s memory honoured

A friend sent this link to me – suggesting it might be a great topic for my blog.

I agreed.

A family decided to drape all the pews in the church with quilts the quilter had made.  From this picture, you can see that she made a LOT of quilts – with a good variety of colours.  How cool is this?

You can read the whole article HERE.

Orca Bay

IMG_1524All the blocks for Orca Bay are made.  Yes, all of them!  Oops, not quite!  I mean, all of them for the main part of the quilt.  The border blocks are in progress as leaders and enders and should be completed by the time the main part is webbed together.

Yes! Light at the end of the tunnel!

A Cute Finish

BBQG Donation Quilt

For the past 2 months, the guild Quilting 101 class has worked on baby quilts.  We choose a simple pattern and made 7 quilts.  It was good learning … how to make large half-square triangles, How to trim them easily and then arranging the blocks.  This month we did quilting with the walking foot.  Organic waves.  I thought it was fun to quilt!  Unfortunately, I only have pictures of the one I did.  Next month, the group will be putting binding on and I will try to get more pictures of the quilts then.

Silly me, I went ahead and put the binding on this one – so I’ll need to find another project to demonstrate binding next month.  That shouldn’t be too hard!  Image result for wink clip art image.

This quilt finishes about 37 x 37″.  The 2nd picture is from the back with the sun shining through … fun.

Design Wall

Piecing

The white Ohio stars are done.  About ¾ of the black ones are done.  And about ½ of the red string triangles with black and white “wings” are done.  I need to make a zillion more “wings”, but they are not as tedious as the hourglass blocks to make.  (In my opinion).

Then there is the assembly of the quilt, then adding borders, then quilting, making and adding the label and then binding.  Believe it or not … I think I see a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel.  It’s just a glimmer.

Quilting

IMG_1470

All of the straight line “in the ditch” quilting has been done.  I think I have decided what to do in the big negative rectangle spaces: a feather arch.  The big floral-type squares will likely be a flower made with what I call “C”.  And the checkerboard section … who knows.

A “Not Finished” Friday

Thank you!

IMG_4187to all of you who posted comments about my gifted “Thank you Notes” quilt!  I was already overwhelmed with the love that the quilt represented!  And then the many  comments from my blog readers … wow!!!  You can read about it HERE.

I had written to another cousin (asking her to show her mom the pictures when she visited next) and told her  that I was overwhelmed. Here’s what she wrote back:

Now about feeling overwhelmed……maybe now you know how we all felt when we received the precious quilts that you made for all of us!  So special……not only for all the work you did…..but also that they were made with love….and with Grandma’s material .  Thanks again for such a beautiful giftEmojiEmoji
How can you say “that’s different?”  Is it different?  So is that really how they felt?  Maybe … sometimes it’s just hard to accept gifts … but this gift I accept with love in my heart!

Orca Bay #2 Progress

Two posts from February 2017 show the progress I had made on Orca Bay at the time.  You can check them out HERE and HERE. The first picture is of the blue string blocks. The middle and right picture are the red string triangles that I cut from my red string fabric.  I made the red string fabric from strips of my red fabric.

Today, I have all of the hourglass blocks made, although I still have to trim a few.  But – that monotonous task is done!!!!  And, some of the white Ohio stars are in progress.

For some reason, when I was figuring out how many red triangles I needed, I was way short.  There’s a huge difference when you need to make 1/3 as many more.

SEW … I still have a zillion pieces to go … but seeing those partial Ohio stars helps me think that this may get done!

A Surprise!

IMG_4149What do you say when your husband says, “A parcel came for you.”  And he pulls out a big box … and … it’s from a cousin in Ontario, Terry,  … she quilts … and the tape on the box says, “Connecting Threads.”   And I’m thinking that she sent me something from them … but what?  I have everything I need for quilting … and she knows that I do not need more fabric or ANYTHING!

Then I open the box … there’s a gift bag inside … it looks like it might be a quilt.  I said to my husband that I had teased Terry in blog-land about making a quilt for her western cousin – but I certainly wasn’t serious.

Here’s the label on the quilt: The quilt is called “Thank you notes” …

IMG_4157

The fabric line is “Irresistible Iris.”   Iris was my mothers name … and of course she did LOVE irises!  What a perfect fabric selection!

IMG_4176

There are “Thank you” notes from everyone in my Ontario family that I made quilts for using my Grandma’s Fabrics – all 14 of them.  You can see the story of those quilts HERE.  Plus, there are a few notes from my aunts and uncle that have also received quilts.   The note above is from my thoughtful cousin that put it all together.  Sew beautiful!!!

Yes, there were tears … I couldn’t believe it!  I still can’t!

And the quilting – oh the quilting … what a variety!  Lovely!  The first 2 pictures are from the back … the others are from the front.   WOW!!!   And to think Terry has only been quilting for about 2 years!  WOW!!!  (You can check out her quilts on her blog HERE.)

The pattern she used is “Envelopes” and is perfect for a signature quilt.  Each of the “notes” is tucked inside an envelope.   Isn’t it pretty awesome?

img_4187.jpg

I’m reeling from the LOVE and thoughtfulness that went into this quilt.  It was totally unexpected!

Reeling is an understatement … I’m totally overwhelmed!

March … in like a lion, slow progress

The weather yesterday was definitely like a lion!  We saw snow, sleet, hail, and the sun was shining when the ground was turning white with hail.  I’m hoping for spring … warmth … sun …

I don’t know if it’s the weather or not, but it just seems like my quilting is progressing very slowly!

Quilting:  I’m still quilting in the ditch to section off parts of this quilt … I like the quilt, but every single time I decide to stitch in the ditch, I remind myself that it would be much much faster to free motion.

Piecing: I’m slugging away at Orca Bay … the only step I’ve completed is the blue string blocks which will be part of the sashing – and they were completed sometime last year, along with the red string triangles.  All of the other units are in progress.   It seems like it’s taking forever … and I’m not enjoying the hourglass blocks …  lots and lots of them to do.  I have no idea how many more I need to make … who counts when you have a billion to make?

The first picture is the pile of blue string blocks.  The 2nd picture is some of  hourglass blocks – waiting to be sewn. The last picture is some of the hourglass blocks joined to the red centres of what will eventually become Ohio Star blocks.

A New Quilting Challenge

I was wandering around blog-land when I came across “The Free-motion Challenge Quilting Along” by Angela Walters of Quilting is My Therapy.

If you don’t know who Angela Walters is – she’s a fantastic quilter! She has a quilt show “The Midnight Quilter.”  Well – go look for yourself! HERE

Anyhow .. the Challenge …  “The Free-motion Challenge Quilting Along”

Yes, I signed up …

The first video talks about what you need for the Challenge … the necessities and the “nice-to-have.”  There is even a free quilt pattern to do the quilting on.

Am I going to make the free quilt?  Yes & No.

I’m going to take fabric – draw some boxes on it (roughly the same size as the boxes on her free quilt pattern). Sandwich the quilt and start practicing.

I’ve already watched the first video … now I’m ready for Week 2.

And the best part: all the videos will be on YOUTUBE … so if you’re like me and already a week or 2 behind, you can still follow along.  And it’s FREE!!!

Image result for Images quilting is my therapy

And the very next BEST part is:  this is learning … it’s like going to a free motion class with a bunch of 12″ squares sandwiched together … and they don’t count as UFOs or anything … so this won’t count towards my UFO list or influence my PHD in 2018.

And the very next BEST BEST part:  I will learn a LOT about free motion quilting!  YES!!!

A Friday Finish!

PHD in 2018: UFO # 13

My finish today is a little quilt  (17″ x 22″) that I started when we were in Quebec.  The first picture is a me & the setup at the campground outside Montreal.  The 2nd picture is the little one a few days ago … I had tried quilting it on my featherweight … that had worked out OK, except that I didn’t have the right colour of thread – so I took most of the quilting out.

Here is a picture of the finished project, hanging on the clothesline under the overhang – since it is raining today!

PHD in 2018: February Update

PHD in 2018 Update

I have completed 12 UFOs.  My goal for my PHD in 2018 is to complete 28.  I have 16 left.  This is a good start towards the goal!

Here is the list of the quilters participating in PHD in 2018. Check out what they are up to.

Roseanne, from “Home Sewn by US” has the list of 12 quilts that she wants to complete for her PHD in 2018.  She has completed 3 of the 12.  She was aiming for 1 a month, so is ahead of schedule.  Check out their progress HERE.

Ann, from “Laughing Gas Quilts” has finished 2 cute Santa pillows … even though she started them years ago – the link is still available on-line.  Make sure you see her pillows HERE.  And follow the link if you’re tempted to make them!  🙂

Even though Kate, from “Life in Pieces” states she hasn’t finished anything – she is making progress on a lot of her UFOs.  Go check out her progress HERE.

Elizabeth has her first quilt for 2018 finished!  It’s a quilt-as you go … and looks great!  And the label is done as well!!! Check it out HERE.  She also has her “TO Do” lists on this POST.  On the last post she talks about how she wants “to do it all”, but realizes that she needs to be more realistic.

My cousin, Terry, hasn’t been working on her PHD list.  However, she has done some fabulous quilting on a baby quilt!  I find it hard to believe that she has only been quilting for a very short time. (Less than 2 years!)  But, since she’s my cousin, I do believe her.  Check out her great quilting HERE.

“The Darling Dogwood” author, Emily has posted a picture of her latest quilt.  A dog quilt for her neighbours.  Check out this wonderful, sweet quilt HERE.

I’m not sure how Deena from Dreamworthy Quilts is doing on her PHD list!  However, she has the cutest post of LEGS that are done.  She’s working on a Christmas quilt that is promising to be CUTE.  Check out her LEGS HERE.

Temptation …

The Temptation

I have belonged to Kathy Tracy’s “Small Quilt Talk” yahoo group for simply ages.  They have recently moved to a different platform and I joined.  While looking around the new site, I saw the photos and files of the new MYSTERY quilt.  I LOVE mystery quilts.  They stretch me.  You don’t have to join the group – her mystery is available FREE (until it’s over) if you click HERE.  And then click on the Mystery Quilt tab.

Of course, since I’m working on my Quilting PHD in 2018, everything I start in 2018, has to be finished this year.  So, if I was to start this Mystery quilt – I’d have to finish it.  It’s small 30″x 30″.  I could rationalize it … my need to start something NEW … to use up some of my stash.  I’m sure I could come up with lots of other reasons to start this quilt!

Of course, I’m going to resist this temptation.  I’m just writing about it on my blog in case **YOU** want to participate.    Image result for Free face winking Clip Art

IMG_1456Quilting:

This is the Queen Size Beginner mystery quilt that we did with the guild.  The bobbins are wound – I’m going to stitch in the ditch around the multitude of 4 patches … I’ll decide later what I’ll put in the negative spaces.

Piecing:

After debating which quilt I wanted to finish piecing, I decided to work on Orca Bay #2. Mostly because it has the most piecing left to do and it is still February.  That gives me 10 months to finish the top, sandwich it, quilt & bind it.  The worst parts are already done (the blue and red string blocks).  If I calculate correctly, I think I have 6 billion more pieces to sew together for this quilt.  (Yes, that is a slight exaggeration!)  I originally did Orca Bay #1 as a mystery quilt in 2011.  That quilt was gifted and I want one of my own.  And, I want it bigger …  This quilt can be found in Bonnie Hunter’s book, “String Fling” available at the Quiltville website.

You can see a picture of Orca Bay HERE.

Summer Envy is complete! Including label and binding!  The quilting was pretty quick – just an easy swirl. I used 6 ½ bobbins of thread and while watching 7 episodes of “When Calls the Heart” on Netflix.  Season 3 is now available in Canada.  And – just for the non-Canadians reading my blog who have watched this series: the Mounties (also called RCMP: Royal Canadian Mounted Police) do NOT wear their red serge outfits for normal work, only for special ceremonies.

The binding is the left-over trimmings from the back of “On Ringo Lake.”  It is a perfect match!  (Probably because it’s from the same fabric line! ~grin~ )

On Ringo Lake and Summer Envy were both completed this week!  WhooHoo!!!  That makes for a total of 12 UFOs completed this year.  And 2 big quilts this week! (Yes, I did complete a retreat bag, but that was started this year, so it’s not a UFO and doesn’t count towards my PHD in 2018!)

Brrr … and a finish

Image result for Free Quilting Clip ArtIt’s cold for here …  and this picture is exactly what I want to do!!!

Yesterday, I puttered around, ironing pieces of fabric … pressing a zillion blocks …

I decided to take a break from quilting and binding and started working on the one project I started this year that I have to finish … a retreat bag – similar to one I made for my sister.

Then I realized that I cut 4″ corners, not 3″ corners … I did check the pattern and I know I saw 4″ … but that was for the distance up from the bottom for pocket placement.  Grrrr ….  Then, I came to terms with the fact that it will be a boxier bag … Then, I couldn’t find the zipper … I added the pockets to the lining … and decided that I should work on binding my “Summer Envy.”  But, I didn’t want to.

SEW … I found the zipper (it had fallen on the floor under my cutting table) … and I finished the retreat bag. The one on the left is the one with 4″ corners, the one on the right has the 3″ corners (which is how it’s suppose to be).

This bag was not a UFO – so I can’t count it as one … but I can include the fabric on my tally: 1 ¼ yards!

Impressive Speaker!

Last night at our guild meeting, we had Barb from Coach House Designs as our guest speaker.

WOW!

Barb designs quilts for Moda – before the fabric is in the stores.  I’m not sure how many patterns she has – but it’s safe to say that she has designed a plethora of patterns.  A few have similar themes, but all are unique.  Many of her patterns have crap-lique (appliqué) on them – but she kept saying “it’s easy.”  I’m not sold on that (yet) .  Image result for wink smiley face free image  She showed many of her quilts that she made from her patterns. A few were made by her friend.

And … she gave every attendee a free pattern and a list of the quilts that she showed at our meeting.  SEW FUN!

Another BONUS, her website has an app that helps with colour placement and change.  It’s FREE and FUN!  (link below)

You can take one of the patterns, choose a different fabric line and make your own changes.

The first is a picture of the original pattern “Bee Inspired”.   The others are done with other fabric lines (French General & Kansas Troubles.)

SEW …. go to Coach House Designs (click HERE)

Click on Fab Switch App … download it and start having fun!

*** WARNING *** this app can take up your time!

AND – you can order the pattern as well!

Please NOTE:  I have no affiliation with Coach House Designs.

My Progress:

I’m almost finished quilting “like Gina’s Comma.”  As I was trimming it, watching the odd snowflake fall, I decided to call the quilt “Summer Envy.”  I knew that the backing was just about the same size as the front.  Here’s what’s left of the trimming of the back: Not even enough for one 2″ square!  That’s what I call “cutting it close!” Hopefully the quilt will be finished tomorrow  … with binding??  maybe.

PHD in 2018  Update

And once On Ringo Lake is finished – that will be 11 UFOs.  AND there will still be 1 ½ weeks left in Feb.!   My initial goal was to complete 3 UFOs in the first few months of the year and then complete 2 a month for the rest of the year.  If I keep this up – I should be able to get more than 28 done!  Which will lower my UFOs for next year!  WooHoo!  But, I should quit talking, about what might happen and get on with what is happening! (More quilting!)

MORE about PHD in 2018

My 10th UFO is finished!  Woohoo!!! And it’s just past the middle of February!  I may be able to get 28 UFOs done this year … if I keep going at this rate!

This is a picture of the “Charming Bag” – a front view and a side view.  It uses Soft & Stable or a foam as the base. It is a fairly large bag – which is wonderful! And the foam helps it to sort-of stand up.   You can get the pattern at Fabric Expressions.  They also have kits available.  Check HERE.

MORE of My Progress at the Retreat

Remember this picture?

Here’s what I got done:

  • On Ringo Lake – about half of it is quilted
  • Charming Bag – done (see picture above)
  • Retreat Bag – the strips are sewn onto the foam.  I forgot the lining and my pockets at home – so couldn’t finish it. This is a new project – sew – it has to be finished this year in order for me to receive my own PHD!
  • Fractured Paint Box – made progress on 10 blocks

Retreat Fun!

I got back from a fabulous retreat this afternoon.  Oh – what fun we had!  Lots of sewing got done!  Unfortunately, I didn’t get any pictures of my projects in progress.  And, I’m sure that I missed a few of the projects that were being put together.

And approximately 4″ of snow fell … snowball snow … and for some reason, some of it ended up down my nightgown … but we weren’t really fighting!

IMG_1383 2

This wall hanging was spectacular!  It included crayon (heat set), embroidery and piecing.

The expertise and talent at the retreat was amazing!

A few quilters “webbed” their quilts together.  It was the first time they had tried it.  I believe it won’t be their last time!

Another quilter did her first machine quilting and did an fantastic job!

There were a few guild mystery quilts put together.  Totally different jelly rolls were used, and the effect is somewhat similar (because they both had red in similar locations), and yet totally different!

And yes, the quilt on the right was getting fixed as I left!

Each one of the pictures has a story to tell.  But I’m tired and about to go to bed.  Enjoy the Show!

I’m off to a retreat again!  I am so blessed to be able to attend retreats!  They are a lot of fun! And I get lots done. Usually, as long as I sit and sew! Ummm …. ya right … hmmm :  there’s the visiting, the eating, the games and all sorts of other distractions!

As usual, I’m taking way more than I can possibly get done!  Here’s what I’ve packed and am dreaming of completing.  All, except for one are UFOs.

  • On Ringo Lake – quilt & bind it
  • Charming bag – get it completed
  • Retreat bag (new project, but like the one I left for my sister) starting from the beginning
  • Fractured Paint Box – get blocks completed and top assembled.

Another finish!!!  WooHoo!!!
Feb '18-3

This was a quilt that was languishing on top of my filing cabinet.  I was not wanting to deal with it because I had to piece the back.  (See HERE.)  Well, it got quilted this week.  I had to make an adjustment to one of the corner blocks …  the flying geese are suppose to be pointing into the quilt, not at this angle.  I realized it when I was quilting these 4 corner blocks.   Thankfully, it was an easy fix as I hadn’t quilted the border yet.  It was fun to do the quilting in the negative space.

Feb '18-2

This is a pattern by Carol Doak … it was a mystery quilt in 2012/13 … but I didn’t do it as a mystery.  A friend had shown me how to paper piece without sewing on the paper and I figured this was a good quilt to try it out on.  I started this quilt in 2014.  I’m not a huge fan of purple, but I do like this quilt!

Sandwiching Marathon!

Feb '18

My husband helped me sandwich 5 quilts over the last couple of days.  I spray baste and since I’m using Hobbs 80/20, I have some pins in each one.  (I find that with the big quilts – the batting shifts way more than when I use warm and natural – but I like how the Hobbs drapes).

From Top to bottom they are:

  • Guild Mystery Quilt – Queen
  • Scrappy Bargello
  • Labyrinth #2
  • “Like Gina’s Comma” (don’t have a better title yet)
  • On Ringo Lake

I’m thinking that if they are sandwiched and the labels made – they may get quilted.  Ha! Ha! Ha!

I was sandwiching my ORL today with the help of my husband.  His hand found a hole and he ripped a 9 patch out.  I couldn’t figure out what happened until I looked close:  one of the seams was about 1/32″ … not very thick!  At least it’s an easy fix! And it was found before it was quilted …

Donation Quilt – Done!

PHD in 2018

Another baby quilt for the guild is Done, Done, Done!  This quilt has been sitting in my “to-do” pile since last fall.  The guild had a “Baby Quilt Kit Making” day.  It’s always fun to go and kit up fabric that is not my own!  I made a couple of kits, but I brought this one home with me.  While I was at my sister’s, I realized that I needed an Easy Angle to make the half-square triangles.  I had cut strips that were 5″ wide and didn’t have enough to sew squares in half … My sister phoned her neighbour to ask if she had an Easy Angle.  She did!  BONUS!  I quickly put on my parka, my mitts, my extra leggings, extra socks and  went over to her house to get the ruler.  It made short work of the half square triangles.

This is UFO #8!!!!
