UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_37ea.jpgUgly fabric quilt Guild challenge: We are to use the quilt pattern in this video:  Here is the fabric that I’ve pulled from my fat quarter bin.  Some of them aren’t even a full fat quarter … and that’s perfect.  They only need to be at least 14″ square.  This is suppose to be done on Tuesday!  Ha! Ha!  Somehow I don’t think it’ll be completely done … maybe, just maybe a top.

This scrappy squares quilt in progress … I’m having fun coming up with different motifs for each of the white squares!

A Friday Finish

I have been having fun … and not working on what I should be working on … but that’s what makes it fun, right?  Sort of like skipping school and doing nothing – that’s fun, right?  Well, I actually wouldn’t know about that, because I never skipped classes in highschool –  except for one time … (That’s actually true, and it’s up to you if you believe me or not!)

I gave you a hint earlier this week when I posted a couple of photos of the Helen Godden Flower Power Quilt-a-long …  Here is the finished project:  Each block is about 7½” square.  Lots of quilting!

This is a free project. Helen has a separate Youtube video for each block and shows you how to do the various techniques, with ease.  Well, with a measure of ease!  She does make it look super easy!  I still have a long way to go, but I’m happy with the end project!

The project was done on an Island Batik neutral, the sashing, binding and back was an Island Batik fabric that I bought locally at a store that is now closed. I used black Aurifil thread (4-5 bobbins) and scraps of Hobbs 80/20 batting.

Helen’s instructions for finishing the quilt made it super easy.  Each block was stitched individually (and coloured with Inktense pencils). Once the blocks were trimmed to size, I zig-zagged them together.  Simple, eh?    For the sashing, I took a 4″ piece of fabric and ironed some “Steam-a-seam” on it.  Then it was cut into 4 –  ½” strips and ironed in place.  SEW SEW EASY!   Then a co-ordinating Aurifil thread was used to stitch down the sashing.  The backing was cut 1″ larger than the piece, folded over and viola! the binding was ready for the same stitching that I did on the sashing.

Sew … what’s been happening around here?

Well, Helen Godden (on Facebook Helen Godden Quilts) had a Flower Power Quilt-a-long.  I was thinking of doing it for a future Island Batik challenge, but all of the specifics for the challenge are not available, yet.  SEW … I thought I’d share it with you.  If you are on Facebook, you can go to her page and download all of the pictures.  She has directions on how to do each of the blocks with a Youtube video for each block.  It’s fantastic for practicing free motion quilting!

These were done on an Island Batik neutral fabric … with Hobbs 80/20 batting, Aurifil black thread and Schmetz microtex needle.  (All of the supplies were given to me via Island Batik).

I have done 8 of the 9 blocks … They are SEW fun to do.  I LOVE the zen doodling!  And I’ve learned a few new-to-me patterns.

The other thing, is that I ventured into the world of colouring fabric.  Helen talks about “Inktense” pencils and how you colour your fabric with them.  From another Youtube video, I learned that you colour, spray with water and then press with an iron to stop the spread of colour or bleeding.  That’s how my blocks got their colour!  I was able to get a set of Inktense pencils at a near-by store that does curb-side service!  (Opus, in Langley).

I will show you the finished wall hanging … hopefully it’ll be done soon!

PHD in 2020: May 1 Report

SEW …. how did you do in the last part of April, taking Small Steps?  Did you try it? Did it make any difference?

I did it with mask making.  One day I cut a bunch of masks, the next the first seam went in … and I broke it down into several steps … and a bit got done each day.  It wasn’t exactly working on my UFOs … but at least they are getting done – a few at a time!

Today: SMART 

I want to talk about SMART goals … I had forgotten all about this … I used to teach it to students writing nursing care plans (you nurses … do you remember those?)  Anyhow … SMART stands for

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Realistic
  • Time oriented

Sew … how does this work for UFOs?

  • Specific – I will work on UFO #4
  • Measurable –  I will work on completing all of block A
  • Achievable – I know how to make block A and have the fabric I need
  • Realistic – It is a reasonable goal
  • Time oriented – I will complete one Block A each day

How will this work for me in the coming month?

  • Specific:  I will work on Florabunda
  • Measurable:  The blocks are done … I have enough for at least 2 quilts  … I will finish one quilt
  • Achievable: The blocks are done -I need to decide which blocks for which quilt and lay them out on my design wall
  • Realistic: Making one quilt is realistic
  • Time oriented – I will complete one Florabunda quilt in May.  (Bonus if I complete 2!)

Stay-at-Home Round Robin … finished!

My 2 Round Robin quilts are all finished!  Quilted and binding done!

The Purple

Here is the purple one that was done as a quilt-as-you-go.  Eagle eyes will notice the pins in the binding at the top … that’s because this quilt is waiting for a special little one to be born and that’s where the label will go.

And the blue one … I quilted and quilted and quilted and I LOVE it!  I even did some ruler quilting!

I know that the centre square (below) turned out wonky … but that’s just the way it is and it’s staying that way.  Perhaps the next time I do it, it will be more non-wonky!

I have no finishes this week …  except for this one mask.  My daughter asked me to make it for a coworker of hers … his nick-name is Plant Dad … so, via messenger, we picked out the fabric and she asked that Plant Dad be stitched in their company’s pink colour.  Apparently he said, “I really love this.”  IMG_0036.jpg

Stay At Home Round Robin … Part 6

Here is the blue Round Robin with the stars added.  I used the AccuQuilt 8″ Qube dies #2 and #5 to cut them out.  It took me less than an hour … and that was with bits and pieces and scraps of the fabrics.  Hopefully in the coming week(s?), I will get this sandwhiched and the binding on.

Here is the purple round robin.  I had a limited amount of space left for the stars, so I had to make them smaller (4.5″ square).   I wasn’t able to use the Accuquilt for them (only because I don’t have the appropriate size dies).  It took me over 3 hours to cut these out.  What a difference from using the Accuquilt!  I was already “sold” on using the Accuquilt for curved pieces and the Block on Board, but this really illustrated to me how time saving it is for regular squares and triangles!

On the purple quilt, I just quilted Stitch in the Ditch along the seams of the stars.  I contemplated outlining the stars, but since I wanted to only use the walking foot to quilt this quilt, I didn’t want to be turning the quilt a zillion times.  It would have been a breeze if I did free motion, but I was determined to just use the walking foot!

I didn’t have time to bind the purple quilt.  Hopefully, that will happen this week and I can show you the final quilt(s) next week!

Fun Facts about the quilts:

All fabrics were given to me by Island Batik.  As an ambassador, I was also given Aurifil  thread, Hobbs batting, the AccuQuilt dies and Schmetz needles from each of the industry sponsers.  Thank you!

For both quilts, I used Aurifil thread for piecing.

For the purple quilt: I used #2515 for quilting and, I used Hobbs batting 80/20 (scraps joined together).

The Accuquilt Cube 8″ dies were used, when appropriate.

Blue is approximately 48″ square.  Purple is approximately 42″ square.

Part 7

Is actually quilting and binding your quilt.  We don’t want to have any more UFOs – right?  If you did a quilt-as-you-go (like the purple one), it should be a matter of trimming the quilt and applying the binding.

UFOs … just keep getting done!

Yes, Another UFO Finish!

Frolic is finished!  Borders on, label on, quilted and binding!  Done Done DONE!!!   It usually takes me 4-5 days to quilt a full sized Bonnie Hunter quilt, but with my new machine (Janome M7), the quilting was done in less than 2 days!  Those extra stiches / minute really do make a HUGE difference!!!

I’m loving how using mostly whites for the neutrals, along with the colours make for a nice cheery summer quilt!  This will be on a bed as soon as it’s washed!

The batting is Hobbs 80/20.  For quilting, I did a large swirl, with echoed flower petals around it.  I was amazed at how this pattern caught all of the 1″ squares quite nicely! A light grey CanSew thread was used for the quilting.

The squares on the blue Round Robin quilt are square in a square.  They finish at 4½” unfinished.  I used dies #5 & #6 from the 8″ Go Cube.  They were super quick to cut and then sew!  I’m loving the variety of Island Batik blues in this quilt!

The purple squares are 2½” squares that go every which way.  They were a lot of fun to make!  I randomly added white to each side of the square, then I place a 4½” ruler over the square and cut.  I didn’t worry about the orientation of the square!

Next Round: Part 6

This is the final round!  It will be stars!  You can make them however you want!  I haven’t started them yet, but maybe, just maybe, I’ll have the purple quilt done.  Most of the quilting is already done, so it might be a quick finish … or it might not get done … time will tell!

By taking small steps Every Day … it will eventually get done!  SEW … for the rest of April, pick one project that you want to complete and work on it a little each day!

I completed another UFO this week.  It just needed to be quilted and bound. This was from a French General Layer Cake.  The pattern is “Anita’s Arrowhead” by Anita Grossman Solomon.  It is available for free, but I don’t know for how long.  I altered the pattern a bit by adding sashing and cornerstones.

I quilted it with an all-over pattern, a 4, 5, or 6 petal flower, echoed and surrounded by swirls.

Stay at Home Round Robin:  Arrows … were added this week.  I’m loving the Island Batik fabrics!

Guild Challenge: This week’s challenge is to finish a UFO …. hmmm … which one will I choose?

My daughter has a beagle, my son has a motor cycle and loves cats and his girlfriend loves cats …

I have very little elastic, but I have some OLD bias tape that I know I’ll never use … a quick stitch down the length, cut to 16″ and I had lots of ties!  The yellow bias tape came from a store in Vanderhoof in the 70’s or 80’s.  Not sure where the iron on seam binding came from!

There are literally a zillion mask patterns out there – with more being published as I speak!  If you must know, I used the pattern from Leah Day … HERE.  For the filter, I gave each of the kids a roll of blue shop paper towels.  Cut each paper towel into four 5″ squares and you have lots of filters!

PLEASE NOTE:  These masks will NOT prevent you from getting the virus – it will help to prevent you from spreading it!

Quilting:

I quilted 3, yes 3 quilts this week!!! 2 Elvira quilts and a heart quilt!  The heart quilt was quilted with hearts!

On one Elvira quilt, I did a large swirl followed by flower petals that I echoed.

Here are the purple and the blue Round Robin Quilts with the arrows added.  I’m happy that I have enough Island Batik fabric to complete these 2 quilts.  I used the Accuquilt Go to make the flying geese (Dies 4 & 5 from the 8″ Cube set).

The next round for the Round Robin is squares.  It can be anything … wonky squares, square in a square, 4 or 9 patches – the choice is yours.

A Friday Finish

This week on the Facebook guild page the challenge was to make a “heart” quilt … any size …  People in the Vancouver area are putting hearts in their windows to honour the front line workers during the pandemic.   I decided to make a quilt that would be large enough to hang in the window so that it could be clearly seen from the street.  I used this pattern: Color My Heart Mini Quilt from the Fat Quarter Shop.  It’s a nice easy pattern.  However, typical of me, I adjusted the pattern and used 6½” blocks to make it bigger.  It turned out bigger than I wanted and that meant I had to piece the backing.  Oh well, it’s done now!

Yes, I used more of my Dr. Suess fabrics … I still have some left, but not a lot!  It was fun to quilt it with hearts of all shapes and sizes!

When I started this in January, I was aiming for at least 15 minutes /day.  With social isolating, I am aiming for at least 30 minutes a day.  And yes, on most days, it’s usually at least a few hours.  But, I don’t want to put myself under pressure saying that I will do a few hours each day!

  • 15 minute days:  January – Mar. 90/91
  • 15 min days/  April= 5/5
  • Total days in 2020:  95/96
  • Percentage = 98%

April’s Island Batik Challenge

fullsizeoutput_c91Last month, for the Island Batik challenge, I HAD to use the “Glorified 9 Patch” Accuquilt Go! die.  And, I made the quilt on the right.  You can read more about it on THIS POST.  I enjoyed making the blocks SEW much!  I knew I wanted to use the die again to make another quilt that was totally different!  I think I achieved that goal!

As I was making the March quilt, I thought about April’s challenge to do a Creative Border or Binding.  The idea to use the “big curve” portion of the die came to life when I thought it would make for a creative, curved border.

It was a little unsettling to have those pieces on the outside of the quilt with nothing to piece and match up to the notches.  (Well, duh, that was the idea, right?)

I used Hobbs Heirloom Permium Cotton Batting that was a dream to free motion quilt with.  I also used Schmetz Microtex 80/12 which goes through the batik and batting with ease.

I started out quilting the quilt with Aurifil #1148: a pretty teal that I received from Island Batik last year.  It was perfect for outlining the colourful blocks and completing the circles.  (You can see a little of it at the corner on the picture below.)  Then I started to do the freemotion quilting to fill in the circles.  Oh MY … talk about a disaster … then I decided to try pebbles … still disastrous … then I decided I HAD to take all of the free motion quilting out.  That took a bit of time! Actually – a lot of time!  A couple of evenings at least!

Once all  free motion teal was removed, I switched to Aurifil #2309, an off white.  It was perfect!  You can see the quilting, but not all the mistakes!  I know, I know … if you look closely, you can still see the mistakes …

I made the bias binding according to one website, but I won’t tell you which one because the measurements were so very misleading.  I ended up with enough bias binding to use on 3, yes 3 quilts.  In the end, I guess that’s better than not having enough binding, right?

I LOVE the vibrant colours of the Island Batik fabrics in this quilt!  Since we’re social isolating, all the pictures were taken in my front yard.  Spring is just starting to show it’s pretty hopeful self!  The hyacinths smell heavenly and the tree with the pink blossoms is alive with the buzzing of bees!

This week: Pinwheels

I used the Accuquilt Go! cutter to cut the half-square triangles to make the pinwheels.  On the purple quilt, I made 12 and for the blue one, I made 16.  I used Island Batik fabrics for both quilts.  The blue I used a strip from a “Stash Builders” bundle, a basics and some yardage from “Faded Blue Jeans.”  The purple used a variety of fabrics.

A Friday Finish

Last week on Facebook, I challenged guild members to make a donation quilt and post it on Facebook on April 3.  Of course, I HAD to make one as well.  I rummaged through my “kid” fabric and found several Dr. Suess blocks left over from another quilt.  I made 8 more blocks and ended up with this quilt.  It was hard, but it was done before April 2 was in the history books.IMG_6413

SEW … we’re suppose to SEW …

Scraps … I have lots and lots of scraps …

I have 2″ squares … lots and lots of 2″ squares …  The picture below shows only a handful of  2 ” squares (I have a large container of them), then random pairs of 2″ squares joined together (anything goes) and then a pile of 4 patches.  I sew these while I’m sewing other projects.  I do NOT sew a scrap of fabric over and over … what a waste of thread and time.  I sew a 2″ square together. Bonnie Hunter calls them “Leaders & Enders” and has a few books out explaining the technique.  Before I heard of Bonnie’s “Leaders & Enders,” I called it “working on 2 at a time.”

My 2″ squares are everything and anything from my quilting scrap pile.  The greater the variety, the better.  See the bottom left fabric on the 4 patch at the bottom of the above picture?  I’m pretty sure that’s a scrap from my friend Donna.  She used to give me lots of her scraps.

I once made a whole quilt with scraps from other people.  Not a single fabric of mine was in the pile!  Since that day, I have refused scraps from others and I no longer dumpster dive into garbage cans on sewing days or at retreats.  I have enough!!!  More than enough!

One of my favourite quilts to make with random 4 patches, is to add a solid colour (white/ snow/ mist/) and put the quilt on point.  I’ve made it straight & it’s OK, but for some reason, I prefer it on point!

The 4 patches for this quilt were started in 2017.  So, eventually, when it is finished it will count as a UFO finish.

Here it is up on my design wall … the rows are sewn.  I just need to add the setting triangles and the corner triangles.

As I was sewing this together, I decided that I wanted a rectangle quilt. Sew … I made 2 more rows with 11 – 4 patches and will add those in.  Below … in the fuzzy picture is an example of quilts using 2″ squares (on the left) 2½” squares (middle) and 3½” squares (right).  Obviously size does make a difference! (GRIN!!!)  These quilts were all made with my grandmother’s fabrics and you can see better pictures of them HERE.

I have the quilt pieced together … I just need to add the corner triangles.  Then, of course, it will be sandwiched, quilted and bound.

Unknown.jpegRight now, in this time of chaos, uncertainty and the unknown, it is important that we Celebrate Success!  I know that most of us are starting to settle into our “Stay at Home,” “Lockdown” or whatever situation we are in.  I know for myself, this is really, really important as we learn to adapt to our new reality!

We need to congratulate ourselves on the goals that we have accomplished … or the individual step or steps to reach the goal.  We NEED to appreciate what we have done or accomplished!

SEW … what have YOU been successful with?  Do you have a flimsy? A totally spotless sewing room (LIAR!!)?  A partly spotless sewing room?  A plan for finishing that UFO that’s been begging to get finished?

Each of our successes releases endorphins (the feel-good hormones), but we need to acknowledge the successes for what they are!

Nothing too exciting this week.  I did finish my April Island Batik challenge … but of course, I can’t show you until April.

How am I?

I’m feeling a bit unfocused!  The other day, I sewed for about 10 minutes and then I HAD to organize my zippers [i don’t know why – i’ve never done so before]…  Then I sewed for about 5 minutes and then I HAD to tidy up a box of fabic [OK … it was a huge mess and needed to be cleaned up] … Then I sewed for about 3 minutes and then HAD to sweep the floor and gather the dust bunnies … Then, it was time for a break … Sigh … but the zippers are still organized, as is the box I tidied … but the dust bunnies escaped and multiplied and are taking over!!!!  Thankfully, this is from the floor and not from inside a sewing machine!!!  And this is just today’s bounty … and I did sweep yesterday as well!  fullsizeoutput_c9e

ANYHOW … enough of my First World Problem!   On to quilting!

Donation Quilt:  On Facebook, I challenged the guild members to make a donation quilt by next Friday … the inspiration for this came from the cancelled Baby Quilt Kit Making day that had been scheduled for Saturday.  There are a few that have taken up the challenge, and some are almost finished!  Me?  Well, I haven’t even started.  Do I make a quick baby quilt? Finish a flimsy for donation?  I’m un-decided … but I better make up my mind soon, eh?

Piano Keys!

There are many different ways to do piano keys …

For the Purple Round Robin (Quilt-as-you-Go), the piano keys are lengthwise  and for the Blue one, they are perpendicular to the quilt.

For the Blue Quilt, I cut 1½” slices from the 10″ stack of Island Batik “Freedom” fabrics and sewed them together.

This piece was cut into 2½” pieces and sewn onto my grey square.

I still haven’t decided about the centre block.  Will I do some appliqué? Some embroidery?  I’m sure I’ll decided before the quilt is finished!

Pinwheels … I haven’t made them yet, so I’m not sure how wide the round will be.  It’s up to you to decide how big and how many pinwheels you want to add to all 4 sides! Do what you want, but add some pinwheels!   Have fun!  There will be another linky party next week!

Friday Finish … NOT

But I do have a flimsy, actually 2, completed.  These are from the Elvira Sew-Along that GE Quilt Designs hosted this past weekend.  I was going to make one large quilt, but decided that 2 smaller ones would be more appropriate for me to make at this time.
