I’ve joined Jen, from Patterns by Jen in doing the monthly colour blocks.

This month, it’s the Pink Peppercorn. (which is actually a berry, not a peppercorn!) The patterns are free each month. However, if you miss a month, there is a small fee, but you can still get the block! You can get the pattern HERE.

This block came together quite quickly … and I used Island Batik fabrics!

And, we are to show off our Pink Quilts. Here are some I have made over the years!

Stitching Stuff

Kate, from Life in Pieces, is hosting “Stitching Stuff” and the goal is to sew for at least 15 minutes a day. I use Kate’s guideline, but my personal goal is to sew for 30 minutes a day. On those “blah” days, it does motivate me to sit at my machine and 30 minutes often turns into several hours. Thank you Kate for the motivation!

PHD in 2022: February Report

I was walking by a fitness studio and saw this sign in the window … I pondered it for awhile and then thought, “This makes a lot of sense.”

When you think about working on a UFO, that’s what you’re doing. Thinking. However, if you take the UFO out of the box and start working on it … that’s Action. How many times have you been working on something and all of a sudden, it’s “Let’s get this done!” That’s Motivation. I find that often happens to me. So I Need to take some Action and work on a UFO … who knows – maybe in March, I can show you a finish!

So how are you doing with your PHD in 2022 February progress?

No UFO finishes this month, but two, Macaron Mystery and the SAHRR are seeing some progress.

The first chart shows my overall PHD standing and New Starts … the 2nd more colourful chart shows all the tasks, or steps I need to take to complete my UFOs.

My Finishes this Month

This first one is my February, Island Batik project “Row by Row.” I had a beautiful fabric collection called Vintage Lace by Kathy Engle. You can read about this quilt HERE. I used Hobbs 80/20 batting, Aurifil thread and Schmetz needles. As well, I used the Accuquilt Qube 8″ die set to cut all the blocks.

This is my favourite finish in February. I’m linking to Meadow Mist Designs.

DrEAMI

Then there is the DrEAMI I made. DrEAMI stands for Drop Everything And Make It. You know about those projects! Sandra, of MMM Quilts has a linky party each month for us to show our DrEAMIs. They are also known as Squirrels …

Here’s how my DrEAMI came about: On the guild Facebook page, one of the members posted a cute Thread-catcher … my comment at the time was “No! No! No! I’ve got NO time to make these!!! But why oh why did I bookmark the page????????? And I’m thinking about what fabrics to use ….” It was bugging me … I just HAD to make it!

The pattern / tutorial can be found at The Sewing Chick, HERE.

I used Island Batik Fabrics. The main fabric is Buildings-Peon, the lining is Chevron-Gaze and the binding is Columns-Olive … all from the Deco Revival collection. The small pieces are scraps from the same collection. Along with the canvas, Hobbs 80/20 batting was used and it was quilted with Aurifil thread.

This basket didn’t take long at all. Less than 3 hours, and that included the hunt for the canvas (it wasn’t in my sewing room), writing down the fabrics used and re-cutting the lining because I goofed when cutting out the corners (my own fault). The pattern is easy to follow!

This week … the Wagon Broke … and I bought fabric!

I can easily justify it. (Can’t we all?) It’s Island Batik fabric!!! And I found it at a store within about 3 miles of my house! Castle’s Sewing Center. They don’t have a lot, but they have 8 bolts!!! That’s a start! Especially since I haven’t been able to find it anywhere else in the lower mainland! (I’m talking at least 100 miles or more). Yes, Over the Rainbow in Washington carries Island Batik fabric, but it’s a huge hassle to cross the border right now and return to Canada – so I’ll be staying put!

I bought 3 m of the neutral … It’s a chevron with hints of blue … of course I fell in love right away. And, I DO have a plan for it!

The fabric basket used 1/2 yard of fabric and my DrEAMI used 3/4 yard.

SAHRR 2022: Round 6

My SAHRR

Chris from Chrisknitssews has chosen Shoo-fly blocks. These blocks were cut with my Accuquilt, using 2 Qube 8 dies. As I was making these blocks – they looked too busy side by side, but putting a plain white sash between them worked. It also helped with the measurement! So all is good!

This is the last round – I may or may not add a small white border … and then it’s going to be sandwiched and quilted. I will be doing my own quilting on my Janome M7.

My SAHRR has used “Flutterfly,” a beautiful Island Batik collection, paired with their solid white. It makes a very ‘crisp’ quilt! I did add a 2 1/2″ border … and it’s now ready to be sandwiched and quilted.

Friend’s Progress

I just found this picture from Dawn W on my phone … she sent it awhile ago and I missed it! I LOVE all the shades of green and how each side of the quilt is different, with the tops the same! Awesome, job, Dawn!

Here is Stella’s … she says, “I have almost caught up again- just have to applique my hearts on…this afternoons project….I have run out of a few of my fabrics – the stash only goes so far! But I am happy that I’ve made it this far without needing to shop! Hahaha Depending on Monday’s round- this may be  my finished project….I like this size as I can handle the quilting here in my own space. And I may even have a backing sitting on the shelf already. This is SEW pretty! I Love how the black really accents the fabrics!

Chere says: Actually like the rails.  Probably because I also like piano keys ☺️ Hope the purple got toned down a bit but not lost. Thought I’d bring back in the flower appliqué. Hummm , what is that final round? I’m happy so far , for a first time SAHRR. It’s looking great, Chere! Well now you know what the final round is!

Charlene says: Yeah…another round complete…loving my picket fence…53 x 66…will be a good size throw once I do round 6! Charlene, I love your take on “rail fence” blocks … the picket fence looks great!

My Block

This week, I chose “Applique.” Gasp!!! Don’t faint! I’m trying to do things I’m not super comfortable with! Now … if YOU don’t want to do Applique – then feel free to do a “rail fence.” I’m not sure if all of the co-hosts are doing applique or the rail fence – you’ll have to check it out. However, we did decide to give YOU a choice of what YOU want to do!

I started off by sewing 6″ borders on the quilt. When it was time to do the applique, I realized that I did NOT want to be turning the complete quilt around. SEW … out came Jack (the ripper) and I un-sewed all 4 borders. I used Steam-a-Seam light and fused all of the applique pieces in place. Then with a blanket stitch, I stitched around all of the pieces. I’m getting better at it, but boy oh boy – is it SLOW going! But, it is done … until next week!!

I’m using Island Batik’s “Flutterfly” fabric collection with their white solid and Aurifil thread for piecing.

The applique pieces are from Angie’s Bit’s ‘n Pieces Ladybug Hugs. You can purchase the pattern HERE.

I am totally amazed at how these SAHRR are coming together!!! Everyone is doing their own thing and each is so unique!!! Love, Love, Love it!!!

Here’s Chere’s and she says, “We’ll this is it.  Picked out enough stuff . Sewed extra stuff that didn’t work. Ready for next round.” Looking good, Chere!

Donna’s: SAHRR, round 4 ✅. I decided to replace the negative space in round 3 with the round 4 blocks. Otherwise it was going to be way too big for a baby quilt 😆 Plus, I think it makes the centre block pop more!! I totally agree, Donna! Love the fussy cut bunnies as well!

Mary says “This was easy. Round 4 done. Yahoo🤪 (Mary had it done early Monday afternoon!) Speedy, Mary!

Joyce says, “SAHRR 4th round Signature Blocks added.  I wanted to bring in another colour so added the purple which is in the centre block.  I added the Piano Keys for more colour and less negative space. I added the white blocker as I didn’t like the 4th row adjacent to the black.”

Charlene’s: I like how she is making this into a rectangle!

This is Darlene’s and she says, “I’ve made 12 of these blocks. Not sure yet just how I’m going to place them. Think I’ll wait and see what tomorrow’s block is.” I can’t wait to see what you do next!

 This is Ciska’s who says, “I got it done for a change…” I’m liking the pinks and greys!

Lots of things happening in the Studio. My husband came in and said, “what are you working on? Whatever it is, it looks weird.” I then explained that I was piecing 4 different quilts. A catalogue quilt, the SAHRR, Macaron Mystery and a March blog hop quilt. He shook his head and said “ah, you don’t like stress, do you?”

Catalogue quilt. This is a quilt for Island Batik’s next catalogue which will feature a new line of fabric. It’s pretty awesome fabric and I’m sure you’ll want to get some for yourself. However, I can’t even give you a sneak preview of the fabric. You can be sure that I will show you one the fabric has hit the stores!

SAHRR 2022: Round 4

My Block

This week, Wendy, from Pieceful Thoughts of My Quilting Life has chosen “Signature Blocks.” If you google “Signature Quilt Blocks” you will find images of several different ones.

I chose to do a simple one, using the same fabric all the way around. Big mistake! (and forgot to take a picture!) It just looked like pretty fabric with weird white diagonal lines … SEW, I removed a few of them, added white sashing between them. I was much happier – and I liked the end result! But I wasn’t sure what to do with the corner blocks … so they are just plain.

I am using fabrics from the Island Batik collection “Flutterfly” and Island Batik’s white solid.

Here is Carol’s … and here’s what she has to say: “Finished my stars.   Only made 3 as this going to be a wall hanging,  and don’t want it too big. Fun to do.” I think it’s going to be a very nice wall hanging!

Here’s Patti’s … She added the stars to her diamond round.

Donna’s: She says, “Here is my picture. Not totally thrilled with all the light background. May still change that, depending on next round.” With the light background, I see lots of opportunities for ruler or FMQ! And, knowing Donna – she’ll do a fantastic job of it … We’ll see what she thinks of the signature blocks!

Charlene’s: Those colourful stars certainly shine when you see the black-ish corners!

Darlene’s: This is going to be pretty big … remember, the center is a panel?

Mary’s: I love how the blue and yellow are bringing out the blue of the centre block.

My Block

This week, Roseanne & Sue @ Home Sewn by Us have chosen Stars. Visit Home Sewn by Us to see how others have made the Stars round.

My stars are little! The HST are 1″ square. When I had them done and put up on the design wall, it seemed too crowded. So, I added more white fabric and made them a square in a square.

Once you have finished your Stars round, make sure you go to Home Sewn by Us and link up to show us your block! (or send me your picture and I’ll post it next week!)

My Block

This week, Emily, from The Darling Dogwood, has chosen Diamonds. Visit her blog to see how others have made the diamond round.

I had to do a bit of fudging to make the diamonds fit … but that’s what little bits of spacing are for, right?

Inktense Pencil Fun

On Monday and Tuesday, a bunch of us met at Essem Textiles to play and explore Inktense Pencils. If you’ve never used Inktense – it’s worth giving it a try. They are like pencil crayons with water soluble ink in them. You can colour on fabric and use water, aloe vera or a textile medium to bring out the vibrant colours.

Below is what I worked on. It’s a free drawing from Helen Godden and is the Christmas 2019 project. My plan is to finish “painting” it and then follow Helen’s Youtube videos for the zen-doodling quilting.

While we were at Essem, a bunch of ladies from the Chilliwack guild stopped in the store. You’ve seen a lot of their SAHRR center blocks HERE … and it was fun to meet them in person!

Stitching Stuff

Kate, from Life in Pieces, is hosting “Stitching Stuff” and the goal is to sew for at least 15 minutes a day. I use Kate’s guideline, but my personal goal is to sew for 30 minutes a day. SAHRR 2022: Round 1

If you are participating in the SAHRR 2022, this week, Anja has chosen curves. There are lots of options for doing curves … but I opted for a simple organic wavy curve to frame my center block. I started with lengths, 2″ wide and did an easy free-style curve. Then I pieced the curves together without using pins. There are NO quilt police, right? So, I don’t need to use pins!

If I had my time back, I would have started with 3″ strips. You can see on the right hand border – close to the top where there is not much of the print fabric showing and using 3″ strips would have given me a an option to trim it. And yes, I am using Island Batik fabric from the “Flutter Fly” collection!

Now I hope this round does not scare you away! Curves are simple – if you take your time.

My block was squared up to 9 1/4″ x 15″ …

I have pictures from 2 Boundary Bay Guild members … Brenda W is using the flower block and Stella is using the pretty block she found in her stash.

 Claudette made here block from a book and Darlene is going to make a large quilt, using the Paris panel.

Charlene wanted to try paper piecing. (This is the same block I used last year for my center) and Carol loves Kaffe!

Donna can’t decide on a colour way and she might have to make 2!! I just LOVE the elephants!

I think there are going to be a LOT of wonderful quilts made with this SAHRR!!

Plans for the New Year … and EXCITING NEWS!!!

My husband says every new year, “My New Year’s Resolution is to not make any resolutions.” I sort of feel the same way, but I do have quilty goals in mind and I’ll share them with you.

Island Batik Ambassador

I was again chosen to be an Island Batik Ambassador for 2022! I was beyond excited when I found out! If you’ve been following me for any length of time, you KNOW how much I love Island Batik fabric!

There will be monthly challenges and projects to make! I can’t wait to show you all the fabulous fabric and goodies from the industry partners!

New to Me

This is new to me, but it’s been around for awhile. I have watched other bloggers do this block of the month and thought I’d join in on the fun this year! Check out Jen’s blog post for more details and to get the pattern for this month’s block. Doesn’t “Spicy” sound fantastic???

January’s spice is Saffron. This is the 12 1/2″ block that I made:

I used 2 different oranges from Island Batik. I didn’t have enough of the dark orange, so I pieced the bottom left square.

Announcing: Stay at Home Round Robin 2022

Last year, as we had a parade for the SAHRR (pronounced Stay At Home Round Robin), we announced that we would be doing it again in 2022.

For the past 2 years, I have done a SAHRR and have made different quilts. The first year I did it on my own and then last year, I had some fantastic blogging/quilting friends join in the fun!

Here’s the quilts from previous SAHRRs. The one on the Left is from last year, the centre one and the one on the right were from the year before.

What’s a Round Robin?

This is a common activity in many quilt guilds. A round robin (in quilting terms) is where each person makes a centre block. This block is put in a bag or container, maybe with extra fabric, perhaps with a notebook, and the bag is passed onto another quilter in the group. They are given instructions as to what kind of border (or round) they are to add on to the quilt. Sometimes the next person will make a border for each side, or one side or two sides of the block. It’s then passed on to another quilter and it continues on … when the quilt centre and all the borders are completed, it is returned to the original maker of the centre block.

So, I stay at home?

That’s correct! You and your centre block and the borders all stay home. You have to make the decisions as to what to add when given directions. How big, how many … it’s up to you.

How do I join?

There’s nothing to join, no sign up. All you need to do is follow our blogs.

How often does this happen?

On January 10, we will show you our centre blocks … I haven’t seen any of my friends blocks – so it’s going to be a surprise for each of us. This will give you some ideas of what you can make or use (do you have orphan blocks?)

Then on January 18 (and each Monday following) we will give you instructions as to what the next border/round is to be. Again, we will all show you our centre blocks with the first border to give you some ideas.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I don’t want to make that round? It’s your quilt – you can leave it out

What size do I make it? That’s up to you … you are sort-of the designer here.

Are the rounds hard? No … each round is pretty simple … squares, rectangles, half-square triangles with perhaps a surprise.

What colours do I use? That’s up to you … you can follow what one of the SAHRR leader uses or have your own colour scheme.

What if I miss a round? You can leave it out, or go back to the blog where the directions are given.

Will you cut my fabric for me? No

How often will the quilt police check on me and my progress? There are NO quilt police!! None!!

What do I do now?

Make sure that you follow each of the SAHRR leaders so that you don’t miss their posts.

Start thinking about what you might do for a centre block.

Relax … this is easy … and it’s only one round each week!

The Year is Almost Over …

Yes, it seems like the year has gone by quickly! And, with the Covid numbers increasing and talks of future lockdowns, I’ll be hunkering down and quilting!!!

Next week, starting on Boxing Day, I will be hosting a mystery quilt. It’s a quick and easy mystery – and it will be fun! Are you going to join me?

Finally finished!

Do you remember the picture on the left? After lots of procrastination and neglect, I finally finished this hot air balloon quilt. The pattern is from Kelly Young’s book “Scrappy Improv Quilting.”

Before I taught a class, using this book, I wanted to demonstrate a few different techniques in making the slabs. There are many different ways. In this quilt, I used stripes, bargello, “twosies, foursies, eightsies …” and my own invention “random pieces in a line.” I have also use orphan blocks.

The baskets were chain pieced and made all at the same time.

Once the baskets were attached to the balloons, I played around with the layout and positioned them all slightly different … I wanted it to look like balloons were in the sky.

The fabrics were all from my Island Batik stash … bits and pieces of this and that. The background is BE34-E1 Dot Sky from the Blender’s collection. Hobbs 80/20 is used for the batting. The free motion quilting was pretty simple … clouds and meandering in the sky and vertical wavy lines on the balloons. The baskets were a grid of mish-mashed straight lines. It is bound with Island Batik’s Black solid.

The binding looks a little wonky on the bottom right, but that’s because it won’t be finished until after a special baby is born and I can put the label on it.

Design Wall

#1 SAHRR: I have my centre block done! Whoo hoo!!! And plan to work on the other rounds! The SAHRR will start on January 10. I’ll show you the centre block then!

SEW … start thinking about what you can use for your centre block. Will it be an orphan block? Will you start something new? something different? Will it be square or rectangle? It’ll be fun to see what you choose!

Stash Report

The back of the balloon quilt used 2 1/2 yards of flannel – from my stash.

This will be my last stash report for 2021! By the end of the year, I will have used at least another 9 yards of fabric, but I’m not counting it until it’s finished. I will continue with my Sunday Stash report in 2022 – it keeps me honest about what I buy. And, I will often 2nd guess a fabric purchase when I think that I need to report it on my blog! (and that’s a good thing!)

Well, my husband didn’t add any fabric this year. Yes, he was with me on a few occasions when we were in a fabric store, but he didn’t pick up anything for me to buy! Well, the next trip to a fabric store could be another story!

  • Fabric Used this week     2.5   yards
  • Fabric Used this year:       104.25 yards
  • Fabric Bought this week:  0 yards
  • Fabric Added this year:      50. 75 yards  (my husbands amounts as well)
  • Net Fabric used                 52.5 yards 
  • Husband’s purchases:  0 yards (which are added into my total amount of Fabric added this year). For those of you who don’t know … my husband often buys more fabric than I do … so, I’m keeping track! Unfortunately, he doesn’t sew!

Stitchin’ Time

This is my last Stitchin’ Time for 2021. The “Any Which Way” Mystery quilt is happening next week and I want to focus on that!

As for this year, I think I did pretty good … only missed 9 days in the whole year! Wow!! It does help that, aside from one 10 day trip, we didn’t go anywhere! If Kate continues this next year, I’ll be back with more Stitchin’ Time in 2022!

Mystery Quilt

This mystery is a quick and easy quilt. The first clue (and fabric requirements) will be announced on Boxing Day, Dec. 26. There will be 5 clues and I’m 100% positive that many of you will have it totally completed before 2022 rings in!

It will be 40″ square … and the rest is a mystery!

SAHRR

5 Blogging Friends and myself will be hosting another Stay at Home Round Robin (SAHRR). What’s a Round Robin, you ask? Well, typically, in the quilting world, a round robin goes like this:

  • Quilter #1 creates their own centre block
  • The centre block is passed on to Quilter #2 and they add a border, depending on what the directions are.
  • The centre block, plus border 1 is passed on to Quilter #3, who adds the next border.
  • And on it continues

With the SAHRR, the blocks and rounds stay home with you. You are the one that is in charge of your Round Robin.

There is nothing to join … you just need to follow each of our blogs so that you don’t miss a thing!

We haven’t decided on a start date … but we have all decided what is chosen for each round. And, no, I’m not going to tell you. Of course, we are all working on our Round Robins so that they’ll be ready at the start! AND … I’m laughing and laughing because we all have good intentions … but the follow through does not always happen!

My Blogging Friends are

Yes, I will be hosting a PHD in 2022.

What is a PHD??? In the quilting world, a PHD is a Project Half Done. As a former academic, who did not get a PhD in nursing, it’s just a play on the initials.

In order to get your PHD in 2022, you have to complete at least 12 UFOs (Unfinished Objects / or projects) AND … here’s the big catch: You MUST complete everything you start in 2022. Yes, EVERY new project. Otherwise your UFO list will just increase and we’re trying to get rid of them, right?

There are a few exceptions to completing what you start in 2022. If the project carries over into 2023, such as a BOM or Bonnie Hunter’s mystery quilt, then it would be impossible to complete it in 2022. And, those last minute projects that are started in December 2022? They don’t count either. But all of the projects you start in 2022, must be completed. This includes labels and quilting and binding – not just completing a top!

In the meantime, you can gather up your UFOs to get ready.

I will be participating in this monthly colour challenge! I plan to make the entire quilt, but have signed up to be part of an occasional blog hop with the monthly blocks. The first block will be announced on January 1. You’ll be able to see the block at Patterns by Jen. The block patterns are free for the month they are posted. If you miss a month, they will be available for a nominal fee. Will you join me?

SAHRR – Parade Finale!

When you do a Round Robin, you are actually the designer. You are given a theme for the round and it’s up to you to decide HOW the round is done. The following quilts will show you the fantastic variety of what each quilter decided to do.

Almost the end of March

I had a fun day today, sewing and chatting with other Island Batik Ambassadors. It’s certainly fun getting to know each other! To discuss what we’re working on, what concerns us, and what’s new!

Design Wall

Piecing

Last week, I said that I had nothing on my design wall. Well, that wasn’t exactly the truth … I just had nothing NEW on the design wall … I did have the pieces from the class “Speed Dating with Improv.”

And, they have changed a bit … they are now sewn into a block and need borders.

As we were taking the course, Krista (the instructor) told us to think of a story to help with the assembly. Some of the ladies had fabulous stories and you could see it in their quilt layout. Me? I couldn’t think of a story. On a Zoom chat, (as this was being assembled, someone suggested that I had an apple in the middle. OK … I guess so, if you use your imagination … So, the final title of this little sampler might just be, “Maybe it’s an apple?” OR … what do you see in this sampler? PLEASE tell me …

Zoom quilting with my sister and one cousin dropped in for a chat! Both my sister and I worked on quilting our quilts. In the afternoon, I played with green fabric. I have a green table topper / runner challenge to meet this month. On the right is a picture of the back … Amazingly, I managed to finish it this evening!

Would you believe that I’m NOT piecing anything at the moment? What is wrong??? I guess I’m just concentrating on getting some UFOs done. However, I have plans for an Island Batik project and haven’t even pulled fabric for it yet … and I can’t tell you what it’s going to be, because it’s a secret!

Quilting: 

SAHRR is in the process of being quilted!!!

I finished the T-shirt quilt. Between the backing, the hanging sleeve and the binding, I used over 12 yards of fabric!

  • Fabric Added this year:      9 yards  (my husbands amounts as well)
  • Net Fabric used                  21.5 yards 
  • Husband’s purchases:  0 yards (which are added into my total amount of Fabric added this year). For those of you who don’t know … my husband often buys more fabric than I do … so, I’m keeping track! Unfortunately, he doesn’t sew!

Stitchin’ Time

  7. Tidy & clean studio for 30 minutes √   done    I did a major clean up and vacuum!!! There were little pieces and bits of T-shirts everywhere! And I trimmed up all the left-over t-shirts into squares or retangles for cleaning rags or whatever … they are being sent up to the camp with the T-shirt quilt.
