Fabric Dust

My husband is a great supporter of my quilting passion (AKA addiction or obsession!) Except when Fabric dust ends up all over the house. And I mean ALL over. I do my best (sort-of) to contain these little bits of cut offs and put them in the garbage. Sorry Sally Manke! I know Sally would save ALL of these and use them in a future project. If she lived closer to me, she’d get them ALL!

Anyhow, they end up EVERYWHERE!!! I cleaned the bathroom and there was a little purple piece behind the toilet. I climbed into bed and there was a blue piece on my pillow. I swept the kitchen floor … and I don’t know how many pieces were there. I got in the car, and yup, there was a piece of yellow on the passenger’s seat. I answered the front door and there was a small green piece on the outside mat. GROAN!!!

And, I’ve been trying to tame my Island Batik scraps … 2″ squares, 2.5″ squares, and triangles (not shown). So there are even more fabric dust possibilities!

Now … my goal today is to do a thorough vacuum and clear up all the fabric dust from my studio and the rest of the house!

Holiday Seclusion Mystery Quilt Results

Remember this? It was a mystery quilt that happened between Christmas and New Years in 2020!

Here are my 2 quilts, the 2 colour quilt and the scrappy quilt!

Here are some of the quilts that members of my guild made.

First up is Heather’s … She made this as a pattern tester …

And then she decided to change the pattern and make some lime green blocks along with the purple! I LOVE it when people take a pattern and make it their own!

And here’s Barb’s, also one of my pattern testers … all scrappy and quilted. And, I really like the bright colours and the scrappy binding!

Donna chose to do the 2 colour version. SEW pretty! I like the 2 borders!

Patricia’s: used scrappy for both the background and the “coloured.” But she chose a totally different colour for the 4 1/2″ squares. It looks great! All the music fabric and the different borders! Love it!

Here’s Alice’s quilt … scrappy blues … well blue is my favourite colour … I love how this one turned out!

Yvonne’s is a bright scrappy with a crisp white background …

This is Fran’s creative quilt. Here’s what she had to say, “I had to improvise a bit as I discovered when I had finished cutting the background fabric that I was short approximately 3 inches, hence the red blocks.  I used a red inner border to tie the red blocks together with the rest of the quilt. “

Layer Cake Quilts

Last year, I made 2 quilts using layer cakes. Both were easy patterns, but I like how they turned out quite different.

These were both made with different French General Layer Cakes. One had browns and the other had blues in it. Of course, the different sashing also gives it a different look.

My First UFO finish of 2021

This was my 2 colour quilt for the Seclusion Holiday Mystery. I finished the binding while Zoom sewing with my sister and cousins on Sunday! It’s nice to have one finished so early in the year!

This quilt measures 42″ square. It is quilted with a light pink Aurifil thread. The fabric is Island Batik. The peach/pink fabric I bought years ago and the white is Island Batik solid. It is backed with the peach/pink fabric. There is no point in showing you the back because the quilting does not show at all.

A Christmas gift finish on Friday

I finished a tea cosy! It was a fairly quick item to make. Sewing the teapot took the longest time. It’s a free embroidery pattern from Kreative Kiwi. It’s supposed to be a coaster, but obviously, I did it as an applique. I used Island Batik solid “Dark Grey” and a white with light grey penguins on it that was in a stash builder’s bundle. However, once the stitching was on it, it was hard to see the penguins.

There are 3 layers of Hobbs 80/20 batting on each side of the tea cosy. It should keep the tea pot nice and warm.

What NOT to do!

I was in a Zoom meeting the other night. I put myself on ‘mute’ and started quilting away. I could hear everything that was being discussed. There was one time it felt a bit lumpy, but I checked, none of the edges had wormed their way under the quilt. But … remember these little ornaments I had made?

Well, they were stacked up on the other side of my sewing machine and one of them wandered … silly thing … it wandered where it shouldn’t … And it got itself sewn into the back of the quilt … It’s quilted on there pretty good!

Now, I needed to decide if it stays? (probably not!). Do I take out the quilting and re-quilt the front? Or do I carefully cut the silly wandered out? I know … a much of a pain as it is to re-quilt, that is probably the best solution! (And yes, that’s what I ended up doing.

The Holiday Seclusion Mystery will start on Dec. 26. With most everyone staying put, I figured it’s a good time to do a simple mystery. Even though it’s called a holiday mystery – it’s not a holiday quilt. Unless you use holiday fabrics … it’s just a small quilt – 43″ x 43.” It will make a great baby quilt or table topper. It can easily be made larger, but I’m just giving you the directions for the small quilt.

Do you want a 2 colour quilt? Then this will do the trick!

Do you want a scrappy quilt? You have that choice as well.

Fabric Requirements

  • Background:  1 ½  yards
  • Scraps:   1 – 1½ yards …. (if making a 2 colour quilt, 1 yard)

SEW … what did I use to make this quilt? For the 2 colour quilt, I used a white background paired with a peach print. It will make a nice baby quilt. The scrappy quilt has a grey background and has dark teal, dark green and green prints. Yes, they are all Island Batik fabrics!

A Funky Friend Finish on Friday …

Try saying “A Funky Friend Finish on Friday” three times fast and then one more time faster! Actually, don’t bother … your tongue will likely not get as twisted as mine.

But yes, I do have a finish … The pattern is “Ellie the Elephant” from Funky Friends Factory … isn’t she cute?

She was made with fabric from the “Deco Revival” Island Batik fabric collection. She was easy to make as the Funky Friends patterns are excellent!

Ellie will be residing my my sewing room. She is not fit for young children because I used button eyes. However, if you use the appropriate eyes, Ellie would be fine with the littles. (one day I will find the appropriate eyes for my stuffies!)

Virtual Retreat

This week, a bunch of us were suppose to retreat at a lovely place about a 45 minute drive from my house. There are usually 18. Then, since Covid, the facility reduced the number to 12, then to 10 and then said “no” to overnight stays. But they offered us “Day” retreats where we could go out to sew, go to a restaurant to eat and go home at night. Uh, no thank you … I probably live the closest to the facility and many of the others have about 1.5 hr drive. And who wants to drive home in the dark on a stormy November night? None of us. And, in the end, we would have had to cancel anyhow because of further Covid restrictions.

SEW … since we’re lamenting that we can’t retreat in person … I bit the bullet and paid for 1 month of unlimited Zoom. Everyone that is part of our core group and a few others were sent the link and we Zoom and sewed away for 4 days.! That’s a LONG time for a Zoom quilting retreat!!!

However, it seems like everyone got a lot of sewing done. One lady said, “I got way more done staying home because I wasn’t up wandering from table to table to chat with everyone!”

It was a LOT of fun to “see” friends that I haven’t seen for a LONG time.

SEW … you’re probably wondering what I got done. Actually quite a bit. A lot of this and a lot of that. I did finish 2 pillowcases with the John Deere fabric I bought.

Another UFO is done!

YEAH!!! I have a UFO finish for Friday!

This bag is from the pattern “Charming Bag” and you can get it at Fibre Expressions. I believe that the designer is either the owner of the store or her daughter. Anyhow … you can order either the pattern or a kit. I used a Charm Pack called “Sew & Sew.”

Before, Covid, Fibre Expressions was at most of the quilt shows that I attended in the lower mainland. I would often see a quilt covered car outside of the show, but didn’t know it was theirs! Check it out HERE.

Here’s a picture of the side of the bag with one of the ties. The ties are super handy when you don’t have the bag stuffed full! (grin)

This is a nice easy bag to make and will be great when I go to guild meetings or to quilt shows.

This leaves me with only ONE, yes, ONE UFO to complete for my PHD in 2020! WooHoo!!! (well, yes, I do have new starts to finish as well …)

Someone asked me if I’d be running the PHD in 2021! And the answer is YES! I will have 14 UFOs left and so hopefully, I will get those done next year. I think it will be a wonderful feeling to NOT have any UFOs.

A Not Finished Friday

OK … so I don’t have a finish … but I do have a part of my Charming Bag finished. The front and back are now pieced together. It’s exciting to see some progress on this UFO!

Did you notice that I didn’t use charm squares from the pack on the bottom? I used grey fabric because I thought it would keep it cleaner. We shall see.

Nothing much to show

Usually, I try to have something to show on Fridays … and I like it best when it’s a finish … but this Friday all I have to show is this:

This is some playing with rulers on the guild’s mystery quilt … it’s all I’m showing because I don’t want to give away what the quilt will be. Plus, I am still in the process of quilting it … so it’s not even finished!

Other happenings …

Ventura Sewing Machine Repair - Ventura Vacuum and Sewing Machine Repair

I have TWO machines in to be serviced and have a spa visit. I took my Janome 6500 in before we left on holidays … they told me a month … I know they’ll phone when it’s ready … but I’m getting impatient!

With the 6500 visiting the spa doctor, I pulled out my trusty Featherweight and … GROAN … I’m not sure what happened, but it decided it also needed to go to the spa!

However, this meme is NOT true in my house!

I’ve also been working on some “behind the scenes” work … I’ll show you eventually … but it’s taking it’s time …

Socks …

I got my alpaca socks from Prairie Spirit Alpacas. It is cool enough today to have them on! They are pretty awesome! My toes are warm and my feet are not itchy! (they get itchy with wool). Alpaca fleece is hypoallergenic – so perfect for me! (If you order from them, put “Gail” in the code and you’ll receive a discount). (I don’t make anything from your order, except a smile!)

I’ll be ordering more socks for Christmas presents … I just need to find out if they want “Lux” for hanging out in or “Slim” for wearing with shoes …

Holidays … Part 1: off grid

Yes, HOLIDAYS! We loaded up the camper and went to northern BC and then over to Alberta … I’ll tell you more about a few of the visits in future blog posts, but this is about our first stop …

Off Grid

We visited some friends that live in the wilds of northern British Columbia and they are off-grid. We had a wonderful time. They have a parcel of land and have homesteaded and … well, it’s just great. If you want to know more, visit their website or youtube channel and watch some of their videos …

An exciting part for me was Christina and her quilt. (I forgot to ask, but I think she’s about 14 or 15). She has an electric sewing machine (they have power from solar panels) and she is making a quilt for one of her sisters. This is the first quilt she has made. No rotary cutter … totally cut with scissors … What a LOT of work!!!

The pictures were taken with natural light from outside … Here’s a closeup of the piecing … I was in awe!!! Where the pieces are suppose to meet up – they are PERFECT!

Here is a picture of Christina – about to measure the width of the quilt because she wants to add borders to make it bigger.

I can’t wait to see the finished quilt!

TGIFF September 4, 2020

Ah, September and the first TGIFF of the month!

TGIFF is THANK GOODNESS IT”S FINISHED FRIDAY. A day where quilters around the world post their finishes … or their works in progress!

Some of you will be saying “but it’s still early on Thursday.” I know … but just think … in some parts of the world … Friday is almost over!

TGIFF is hosted by various bloggers … a different one each week. And it’s managed by a few very capable inventive quilters who send out reminders and pitch in when needed. If you want to host TGIFF, check out their website. (They will also help you to set up a Linky Party!)

My finish is this cute quilt … it was in a pile of “to be quilted” and I had even forgotten to put it on my “New Starts in 2020” for my PHD program. That’s OK … it’s done now, even if it didn’t make it to the list!

The quilt is basically the pattern from “5 ways to use ugly fabric” youtube video. I didn’t care for the look when the blocks were finished, so I added sashing and borders. The quilt finishes at 44″ x 59″ and the fabrics were not what I’d call ugly … but it did use up some fat quarters that were hanging around.

Last Friday in August!

Picnic in the Park

Earlier this week, some of the guild members met in a park for lunch … everyone practiced social distancing and there was show and tell. I hadn’t met Brenda before, but I was thrilled to meet her! She had just finished her top from the “Stay at Home Round Robin” that I hosted in the spring. (See Here for the finish and Here for the start.)

Doesn’t Brenda’s top look fantastic in black & white with a pop of red? She wants to make it bigger … so ideas were flying around. Koodos to Brenda for knowing “it’s not a race” and for sticking with it! I can’t wait to see the finish!

Rainy Friday

It’s raining out, the breeze is blowing and it’s fairly warm out. We have most of the windows open and are enjoying the fresh air! I just love summer days like this! I prefer to see sun, but this is a nice change and the sun is suppose to return tomorrow.

On the Quilting Front

I’m almost finished the Carpenter’s Star (Wheel). The quilting is done … the label is on … the binding is on, but needs to be sewn down. It’s a flange binding and most of what you see in the picture is the flange … it’s hard to see the dark blue that will show the most. I should be able to finish this quilt later today. I always sew my binding by machine – so it really doesn’t take that long

Dollar Store and Back to School Shopping

It’s August and kids are starting to get ready to go back to school … or not.  At any rate, the stores have all their “back to school” sales on.  Do you take advantage of these sales for your sewing room?

I do.  Here are some of the products I use in my sewing room:

  • A flannel back tablecloth is great for a design wall … especially if I’m going sewing somewhere besides in my home.
  • Hair clips are great for clipping labels onto fabric
  • Spray bottle for water (I always use a dry iron … and I spray the fabric if I want steam)
  • Shelf liner … will hold your sewing machine foot in place, add it to the back of pincushions to prevent them from slipping around, and in a pinch, you can use a couple of pieces (3″x 3″) to place under your hands when you free motion quilt
  • Hair ties – place them around the thread and the bobbin and you know which bobbin goes with which thread … plus it keeps the thread from unwinding
  • Notebook with grid lines … for planning that next quilt and Pencil crayons to colour your quilt
  • Mechanical pencils for fine lines (on the back of HST or to mark the centre of a block.
  • Elmer’s School Glue … I use this a LOT … dilute it 4 parts water to 1 part glue and it’s perfect for gluing down binding or whatever needs to stay in place.

There’s probably a lot of other school supply and dollar store products that can be used for quilting. What do you use?

PHD in 2020: August 1 Report

Did July just fly by?  I almost feel like I’ve missed this month.  But no, I’ve been here, sewing and quilting away … but it feels like the month flew by SEW fast!  I don’t often feel that way, but this month, I do!

And yet, when I look back on the month – a LOT of things have happened!

I think that the highlight of my month was receiving the Island Batik boxes.  Oh – yes, it is a highlight for every single ambassador and we all LOVE it!  Seriously!!!  You can see my Unboxing post HERE.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_38d6Then there were the 2 “Christmas in July” posts.  There was the Island Batik one where we were challenged to use the awesome Accuquilt Go!me fabric cutting machine, make a quilt, or ??  and gift it and the Go!me to a new quilter  It was fun!  You can read more about that post HERE.

UFOs

I did finish 2 UFOs this month!  WhooHoo!!!  And have 4 more to finish by the end of the year.  I should be able to manage that!

The first UFO that I finished was Summer Solstice.  It is a Judy Niemeyer paper pieced pattern that seemed to take ages to do.  Well, I guess 4 years is close to “ages” – right?

Starts in 2020

I had 5 new starts in July.

The tumbler quilt is now quilted and just waiting for binding! Sew close to a finish!JShsBo8cT0KKmmxeR4gemA_thumb_38a3

I did start my December Island Batik challenge while waiting for my boxes to arrive.  But that has been put on the back burner for now … And since it’s a secret, I’m not going to show you any pictures! You’ll just have to wait for December!

I started this blue Carpenter’s Wheel … and the blocks are all done.  It just needs to be webbed together!

My July Island Batik challenge was started AND finished …  that was the first Christmas in July post! (See above)

And the August Island Batik challenge has been started.  I am using the Studio 180 “Four Patch Square Up” ruler and a Fat Quarter bundle of Mesa Verde.  I’m liking how the squares are coming out perfect!!!  And, if you know me – that’s highly unusual!  I more of a “fudge” it quilter than a perfect quilter!

A UFO and Friday Finish!

YEAH!!!

I’m beyond happy to get this UFO ticked off my list!  That’s 14 UFOs completed this year.  And one of them turned into 3 quilts (click HERE) and this one turned into 2 quilts.  I’m not counting the extra quilts as extra UFOs.  I don’t want to add to my list and don’t want extra UFOs.  Sew, they get done!

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_38c9When I started working on this UFO, I realized that I actually had almost enough blocks for 2 quilts … so 2 quilts it became.  This one has the backing that I posted previously.  It was fun to quilt … bones, stars, hearts, paws and swirls.

Here’s the 2 quilts on the clothesline:

Both quilts used a dark grey thread and Hobbs 80/20 batting.  These will be gifted to special people that have played a huge role in our dogs’ lives.

TGIFF

That’s right, today, I’m hosting TGIFF.

I have finished ONE of 2 Dog/Cat quilts.  This was a UFO that had several blocks done … way more than was needed for a single quilt.  I made a few extra blocks and will get 2 quilts out of it.  Here is the largest quilt … the smaller one will be completed in the near future.

This quilt was FMQ with swirls, dog bones, hearts and paws.
